A day after Piyush Chawla announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, former India left-handed batter Yuvraj Singh commended the leg-spinner for his exceptional ability to perform under pressure throughout his career.
On Friday, Chawla concluded a 20-year professional cricket career, which included representing India in three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is, accumulating 43 international wickets. He was also a member of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squads.
Yuvraj Singh expressed his admiration on Saturday in a heartfelt post on his 'X' account: 'Over the years, I've played alongside many teammates, but few have shown the resilience and dedication that Piyush Chawla brought to the field. From his debut as a teenager to becoming a two-time World Cup winner, he built a career on delivering when it mattered most."
Yuvraj highlighted Chawla's accomplishments: 'With over 450 first-class wickets, years of service for Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, and being the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, what stands out more than the statistics is the way he carried himself with calm, grit, and commitment."
'As you enter the next chapter of your life, know that you've earned every bit of respect! Proud to have shared the field with you, laddoo! Go well," Yuvraj concluded.
Chawla also claimed 192 wickets in as many IPL matches, with his last stint being with the Mumbai Indians from 2022 to 2024. He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team that won the IPL in 2014 and also secured the Ranji Trophy for Uttar Pradesh in 2005-06.
Chawla's final competitive cricket appearance was for Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in November 2024, where he took 4-12 against Himachal Pradesh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest
Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.

Legendary Korean coach KiSik Lee, who led the USA to over 300 World Cup medals and three Olympic podium finishes, is all set to become India's national archery head coach on a three-year contract leading up to the Los Angeles Games 2028, a top Archery Association of India official confirmed to PTI on Saturday. The 67-year-old Lee has been shortlisted for the top job in the recurve section, and the proposal has been forwarded to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for final approval. 'Given his outstanding resume, he is the ideal candidate to guide India towards its first-ever Olympic medal in archery," the official said. 'We've had several rounds of discussions with him, and he has agreed to commit to India until LA 2028." A bold gamble after years of heartbreak India's archery program has long promised greatness but has repeatedly faltered on the Olympic stage, often crumbling under pressure. Since Athens 2004, India has mostly relied on Korean foreign coaches, except for the 2012 London Olympics when the legendary Indian archer Limba Ram led the team. However, the results didn't change. Recently, Korean coach Baek Woong Ki was appointed as head coach for Paris 2024, but he was denied accreditation due to the contingent exceeding its support staff quota. 'He developed world-class athletes and inspired a generation of archers and coaches." Under his leadership, the USA also won golds at indoor, outdoor, field, and 3D world championships. Lee was instrumental in nurturing youth talent through elite programs like the 'Junior Dream Team' and the 'Resident Athlete' program at Chula Vista. Challenges and expectations Lee, who previously coached Korea and Australia, is known for using a drawing technique that is distinct from both the Indian and Korean methods. His appointment is expected to bring in technical innovation and mental resilience, which have been glaring weaknesses in India's past Olympic campaigns. However, questions remain on whether India's senior archers, who often prefer personal coaches, will adapt. India's archery power couple Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari, who have seven Olympics between them, recently hired veteran Rahul Banerjee as their personal coach. KSCA holds crisis meeting after Bengaluru stadium stampede
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) held a key meeting on Friday to decide the next course of action following the stampede incident outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The meeting was being chaired by KSCA President Raghuram Bhat. More details are awaited. Earlier in the day, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations from their posts, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. This was ahead of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. As per ESPNCricinfo, the resignation has been submitted to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. Also in Bengaluru, CID officials paid a visit to KSCA office, with the state government having ordered a CID probe into the stampede case. Apart from this, a government letter surfaced revealing that the Karnataka government had granted written permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to hold an event at Vidhana Soudha to celebrate RCB's victory. The letter, dated June 4, was a swift response to KSCA's request, which the government approved by applying 19 conditions, as a huge crowd was expected in the Chinnaswamy stadium. Among the top concerns mentioned in the approval letter is the safety of the iconic Vidhana Soudha premises. 'Due to the large crowd that will gather during this event, precautions should be taken to ensure that no damage is done to the Grand Steps, statues, roads, or parks. You must be willing to cover the full repair or cost if any kind of disaster occurs,' mentions the letter. The other key conditions included, 'The program should be conducted without disrupting the traffic system. Action will be taken in this regard in coordination with the Police Department. The program should be conducted in a manner that does not interfere with office work. Keeping the event venue clean. Plastic bottles and items are strictly prohibited.' Apart from this, the event management company arranging the breakfast was asked to pay an advance security deposit of Rs 10,000, which was refundable, and a non-refundable Rs 10,000 fee. Meanwhile, a sessions Court in Bengaluru on Friday remanded four individuals, including senior Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium here. They were arrested in a joint operation by the Cubbon Park Police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of June 6 (Friday). (ANI)
