Outpouring of grief following death of Cape Town school's headmaster
He was 59.
Several of Erasmus's previous schools where he taught, as well as schools in the area, also paid tribute.
In a Facebook post, Fairmont High School in Durbanville in Cape Town wrote:
Dear Fairmont High School Community,
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Headmaster, Mr. Leon Erasmus.
Mr. Erasmus was a man of immense strength, integrity, and honour. He led our school with unwavering dedication and a deep sense of purpose, showing us – his family, our staff, students, and the wider community – what it truly means to fight. Fight for others. Fight for good. Fight for progress. And above all, fight to live.
Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader and human being. But more than that, we celebrate a life that left a lasting mark on each of us. His legacy of courage, compassion, and excellence will continue to inspire Fairmont for years to come.
While our hearts are saddened, we are deeply grateful to have had Mr. Erasmus lead us all. He was not only at the helm of our school; he was at the heart of it. His legacy will live on in the values he upheld and the lives he touched, his guidance, vision, and spirit will forever remain part of our fabric.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandson, mother and all loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We will share details of the celebration of his life, in due course.

Significant strides in school sanitation: 97% of schools now equipped

Image: Department of Basic Education South Africa / Facebook A total of 97% of schools identified in 2018 for the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) programme have been provided with safe and appropriate sanitation facilities as of July, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said. 'The Department of Basic Education has advised that, as of 1 July 2025, out of the total 3 372 schools identified for intervention through the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) Initiative, a total of 3,254 schools (97%) had been provided with safe and appropriate sanitation facilities,' Gwarube said. She was responding to IFP MP Siphosethu Ngcobo when he asked about the progress made in eradicating pit latrines at public schools in each province since the launch of the SAFE initiative in 2018. 'The balance of 45 remaining pit toilet projects, identified under the SAFE initiative, were initially delayed due to funding constraints from certain donor partners. They have since been reallocated to performing implementing agents and are earmarked for completion in the current financial year.' Gwarube also said the Department of Basic Education remained committed to ensuring that all pit latrines identified through the SAFE initiative were eradicated and replaced. 'Furthermore, the Department of Basic Education remains committed to ensuring that all pit latrines not identified under the SAFE initiative are identified and replaced by provincial Education Departments as soon as possible. 'Our goal is to provide safe, age-appropriate, and dignified sanitation facilities that create an enabling learning environment where every learner can focus on their education,' she said. Gwarube added that R5.5 billion spent in the School Infrastructure Backlogs Grant (SIBG) has been audited since the inception of the SAFE initiative. Her response showed that the Eastern Cape expenditure totalled R3.4 billion, KwaZulu-Natal R1.5 billion, and Limpopo R498 million. The Free State and Mpumalanga showed no expenditure on the SIGBG because they have been entirely funded by the Provincial Education Infrastructure Grant or funded through donor funding. Gwarube said the department remained resolute in its commitment to eliminating all unsafe sanitation infrastructure at public schools across the country.

WIFE of Durban plane crash pilot pays emotional tribute
The wife of veteran South African pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray who was killed in a tragic plane crash off the coast of Durban on Thursday, has paid an emotional tribute. Blackwood-Murray, 61, was performing a display in his ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft as part of an airshow linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) Global Summit 2025, hosted at Virginia Airport, when the plane crashed into the ocean just before 14:00. Emergency services and eyewitnesses quickly responded, with reports of the plane plunging into the sea near Suncoast Beach. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), eThekwini lifeguards, Police Search and Rescue, and other agencies launched a joint operation, which remains ongoing as at the time of publishing. 'The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 will be deployed to assist in the ongoing search and provide a platform for Police and Metro divers conducting scuba operations,' said NSRI duty coxswain Lorenzo Taverna-Tunisan. Battery Beach and surrounding areas have been closed to the public as wreckage continues to wash ashore and search teams expand their efforts. Blackwood-Murray, well-known within aviation circles, was regarded as a world-class pilot and true gentleman. He was celebrated not just for his elite flying skills, but also for his warmth and mentorship within the aviation community. Kyla Blackwood-Murray took to Facebook on Saturday to pay tribute to her husband, writing: 'Yesterday I said goodbye to my most favourite boy in the whole wide world. 'It was the call I have been dreading my whole life. But I always said I would rather he go doing the things he loves the most. I just didn't realise he would have left so soon. 'He was my world. We did everything together and we had so many plans. We were going to grow old and be the most awesome geriatrics together. 'He has taken away the biggest piece of my soul and I don't know how I am going to live without my wingman. 'He brought me more joy than I ever imagined possible. He was always there for me helping me become the best version of myself. 'I am beyond heartbroken. Just to have one more day with him. If only. 'My baby may you soar the skies and visit all the amazing places you had on your bucket list. 'You rocked my world. You gave me meaning and purpose and I don't know how I am going to do life without you. 'Thank you for loving me completely. I am devastated. You will always be my person. Forever and always Andrew Blackwood-Murray.' 'Andrew, your spirit will forever soar in the skies you loved,' shared respected media personality and close friend, John Walland, who remembered him as 'a warm and passionate man whose skills touched so many lives.' Others reflected on his humility and approachability, regardless of how busy he was. 'Gonna miss you. A gentleman, an amazing pilot… He will certainly leave a gap in the airshow display calendar,' wrote Venessa Richardson. 'My heart bleeds, Andrew. You were such a gentleman. I'm glad I had the pleasure of sharing a classroom with you,' added Ryan Douwie. As the search continues, tributes to Andrew Blackwood-Murray serve as a reminder of the deep personal and professional impact he made throughout his life. Fun day of fire drills and football for Osizweni children
Fun day of fire drills and football for Osizweni children The Ballito Lions Club treated 45 underprivileged pupils from Osizweni Primary School to a day of sport and fun at Townsend Park on Saturday. The school, located in Driefontein in Upper Tongaat, has 200 pupils and does not charge fees. Despite government funding, it still faces shortages of uniforms, stationery, food, furniture and maintenance. Earlier this year, the Lions donated 80 chairs, shoes and jerseys for winter. 'This school is in dire straits and needs a lot of assistance,' said club president Paul Naidoo. The children, accompanied by teachers, travelled to the Lions' Ballito clubhouse for breakfast before playing soccer and basketball. A highlight was an inspirational talk and fire safety demonstration by the KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency Service. 'KwaDukuza municipality was generous enough to send the team. They told the children they too could be firefighters one day,' said Naidoo. After a braai lunch, the pupils enjoyed music and dancing before receiving grocery hampers.
