TikToker shares 'genius' hack to turn on hotel lights without your key card

Daily Mail19-05-2025
A holidaymaker has gone viral after revealing a clever way way to turn on the lights in a hotel room without using a key card.
The use of key cards to activate room lights and power might have become commonplace in many hotels across the globe, but the practice can also cause an inconvenience to some guests. If the key card is removed, electric outlets are also deactivated, making it impossible to charge devices while the room is unoccupied.
Thankfully, lifestyle blogger Nia Braidford has shared a practical solution to switching on the lights in a hotel room without the need for a specific card.
Nia told her followers in a TikTok video: 'Sorry, I might have been living on a foreign planet but you know when you're in a hotel and you have to put your key card in the thing to make the lights work, like the little pocket.
'Well, my mother has taken the card so now the lights aren't meant to work, but did you know you can put any card in?'
Holding a Holland & Barrett rewards card, the TikToker inserted it into the key card slot, which, to her surprise, proved successful in switching on the lights.
A former hotel employee said in the comments section: 'Doesn't even have to be a card! When I was a hotel housekeeper we used to use folded up scraps of paper to do it.'
Nia's claim has also been backed up by dozens of holidaymakers on Reddit who have shared photos of their credit, energy or membership cards in their hotel room's key card slots.
However, a number of seasoned hotel guests warn that swapping the key card for another card doesn't always work.
One user wrote: 'Doesn't work, I have been in 4 different hotels in the last month, 3 needed a card for power and none of them worked with a random card.'
Another said: '80 per cent of all the hotels I was in in SE Asia this year required a true room key, not just a random card.'
A third recalled: 'We tried that once, but they changed the key (I'm guessing it was the code in the strip or something?) so that only the new one worked in the door and lights. Ugh, so frustrating!'

Mastodon rocker Brent Hinds dead at 51 after horror Atlanta motorcycle crash

Brent Hinds, the former singer-guitarist for the Grammy-winning heavy metal band Mastodon, has died in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta aged 51. Hinds, who left Mastodon after 25 years in March 2025, was killed on Wednesday when his Harley-Davidson collided with a BMW SUV around 11.35pm per Atlanta News Firs t. The Atlanta Police Department said in a report the driver of the SUV failed to yield while making a turn - with Hinds found 'unresponsive' at the scene and later pronounced dead by medics. 'The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision. Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased' the report states. 'The other driver involved, a female who occupied a BMW SUV remained on scene. The APD Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances. 'Preliminary investigation indicates the male was traveling West on Boulevard. The female operating the BMW SUV failed to yield while turning left and collided into the male victim who was operating the Harley-Davidson. The investigation remains active at this time.' The band paid an emotional tribute to Hinds in an Instagram statement which read: 'We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. 'We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. 'Our hearts are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone's privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.' Mastodon had three albums rise into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart and two that topped the Rock Album chart - Emperor of Sand in 2017 and Once More ´round the Sun in 2014. Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 with bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. Mastodon´s third studio album, 2006´s Blood Mountain, was their first to reach the Top 40, peaking at No. 32 on the Billboard 200. Hinds left the band in March 2025. No reason for the departure was given. The band said they had 'mutually decided to part ways,' but comments made by Hinds on Instagram indicated a rocky relationship with the members of his former band. 'We´re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we´ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors,' the band said at the time. Mastodon earned six Grammy Award nominations, winning one in 2017 for best metal performance for Sultan's Curse from the album Emperor of Sand. Rolling Stone magazine listed Mastodon's 2011 album The Hunter among its best off the year, saying the band had 'streamlined their molten thrash into a taut thwump that doesn´t pull back one bit on their natural complexity of innate weirdness.' Hinds was due to tour Europe later this year with Fiend Without a Face, a band that was once a side project during his years with Mastodon.

I moved from a ‘rough' council estate to a mansion but my neighbour was vile to me for being too common

Plus, how the entrepreneur went from being a single mother living in a council house to raking in a whopping £1.8million a year CRUEL COMMENTS I moved from a 'rough' council estate to a mansion but my neighbour was vile to me for being too common Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A WOMAN who previously lived on a rough council estate and moved to a 'posh area' has said her 'vile' neighbour was rude to her for being too common. Terri-Ann Nunns, 41, from Doncaster, who previously starred on Channel 5's Rich House, Poor House as a self-made millionaire, said she was 'happier' on the council estate. 3 Self-made millionaire Terri-Ann Nunns opened up about moving from a council estate to a mansion - and how her posh neighbour was vile to her Credit: Tiktok/terriann_nunns 3 Terri Ann claims her neighbour's actions forced her to move house Credit: Instagram/TerriAnn_Nunns After creating a successful diet plan and having a budget of £1,200 a week with her husband Michael, and their three kids, Terri-Ann moved into her 'dream' mansion. However, things were not all rosy as the person living next to her made her life a living hell. The six-bedroom mansion had come with a cinema room and a swanky bar, but the dream ended when she was forced to sell the property and move out. In a TikTok video on her @terriann_nunns account, she said: 'We bought this house, and then I had offices built in the back garden, it was just amazing. 'But then I had a new neighbor and he were a doctor and he weren't very nice. 'I think personally he could not stand the fact, like, I'm just me. I'm not posh, I'm just me. 'I'll never change, I've always been from a council estate, always been rough and ready, professional, but can be rough and ready as well. And he just couldn't stand us.' Terri-Ann claims tensions rose when he started moaning about her staff parking on the street. She added: 'I had a massive drive for everybody to park on, every staff member, but because they're coming at different times, one of them would get blocked in. 'So they just thought, 'we'll park on street.' So one of my staff argued with him. Anne and Mick Ross look around the Nunn's six-bed house on Rich House Poor House 'He nudged her, it was vile. 'Honestly, I just think he just couldn't stand the fact that we weren't posh. We were just, like, normal.' Terri-Ann said she suspects her neighbour ended up phoning the council to say she was running a commercial business out of her home. She continued: 'I don't know, he just hated us. 'And then when the council got involved, basically the reason I had to move out the house because they said I couldn't run my business from there. 'So I'd spent £40,000 on this office being built in the back garden, and the council turned around and said you're using your property as a commercial property which we weren't. 'We had the big house and the thing at the back garden. Anyway, I said I'm not staying here. 'I'm not staying here and not being able to run my business. It's just not worth it, what we've invested. 'So we sold the house, made money from it, sold the house and bought the one that's on Rich House, Poor House.' 3 The Nunns outside their six-bedroom mansion on Rich House, Poor House Credit: Emporium Productions Ltd SNOBBY COMMENTS Terri-Ann insists she's proud of her success, but claims often people who have had a privileged upbringing 'look down' on those who haven't had that. Many people were quick to praise the entrepreneur on her success in the comments. One said: 'Girl I feel you, I miss the estate so bad! Way to snooty round here.' Another added: 'Love to see my own kind of people getting along in life good on you. sounds like the neighbour was very bitter and jealous of you.' BUSINESS SUCCESS Terri-Ann made her fortune through her Terri-Ann New You Plan, and regularly shares her top tricks for her own drastic body transformation. She went from being a single mother living in a council house to raking in a whopping £1.8million a year. On her Rich House, Poor House episode, her family swapped their six-bedroom home with struggling Anne and Mick Ross, who lived off £200 a week. During the episode, Terri-Ann admitted she may have been happier in her life before her success, saying: 'We're probably less happy now. 'I have to work loads of hours, and neglect Michael (her husband) a little bit, and obviously it's clear I neglect my kids because they told me all this week.'
