Bethany fire: Check which popular hiking trails are closed as blazes spread to 10 acres
On Tuesday afternoon, a fast-moving brush fire broke out in Burbank.
Named the Bethany Fire, the flames were first reported shortly before 3:30 p.m. near Bethany Road and Amherst Drive, according to the Burbank Fire Department. Within the hour, the fire had already spread across 8 to 10 acres of dry brush and hillside.
Evacuation orders were issued for residents above Bel Aire Drive, specifically along Walnut Avenue, as well as the area surrounding the Bel Aire Ballfield, which includes Vista Ridge and Starlight Circle. The DeBell Golf Club was also cleared as a precaution. Meanwhile, homes located north of Kenneth Boulevard and west of Magnolia Boulevard were placed under an evacuation warning.

All hiking trails in the hills are currently off-limits, including Wildwood Canyon and the areas around the Stough Nature Centre, both of which are frequented by locals for hiking, dog walking, and scenic views of the San Fernando Valley.
'If you are on or near the hiking trails or in these recreation areas in the Burbank hills, please leave the area immediately,' the Burbank Police Department said. 'Officers are in the area to assist.'
Notably, the McCambridge Recreation Centre at 1515 North Glenoaks Boulevard was opened as an evacuation site for displaced residents.
Emergency crews from the Burbank Fire and Police Departments, along with the Los Angeles Fire Department, have been working on the scene to control the flames and assist residents.
Now, authorities are urging residents in and around the affected zones to prepare for possible evacuation. Precautionary steps include: Creating and maintaining defensible space around homes to guard against flying embers, packing an emergency bag with essential items, including important documents and medications, and monitoring evacuation routes and updates from local officials

Fire officials have yet to determine what sparked the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.

The Prime Minister said he had read 'every single word' of an independent report into child sexual exploitation by Baroness Louise Casey and would accept her recommendation for the investigation. The Government has for months held off launching a statutory probe, saying its focus was on implementing the outstanding recommendations already made in a seven-year national inquiry by Professor Alexis Jay, which found institutional failings and tens of thousands of victims across England and Wales. But speaking to reporters travelling with him on his visit to Canada, the Prime Minister said: 'From the start I have always said that we should implement the recommendations we have got because we have got many other recommendations… I think there are 200 when you take all of the reviews that have gone on at every level and we have got to get on with implementing them. 'I have never said we should not look again at any issue. I have wanted to be assured that on the question of any inquiry. That's why I asked Louise Casey who I hugely respect to do an audit. 'Her position when she started the audit was that there was not a real need for a national inquiry over and above what was going on. 'She has looked at the material she has looked at and she has come to the view that there should be a national inquiry on the basis of what she has seen. 'I have read every single word of her report and I am going to accept her recommendation. That is the right thing to do on the basis of what she has put in her audit. 'I asked her to do that job to double check on this; she has done that job for me and having read her report, I respect her in any event. I shall now implement her recommendations.' Asked when it would be launched, Sir Keir said the inquiry would be implemented under the Inquiries Act, which will take 'a bit of time to sort out' and would be done in 'an orderly way'. The issue of grooming gangs was thrown back into the spotlight after tech billionaire Elon Musk used his X social media platform to launch a barrage of attacks on Prime Minister Sir Keir and safeguarding minister Jess Phillips. It followed the Government's decision to decline a request from Oldham Council for a Whitehall-led inquiry into child sexual abuse in the town. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who has repeatedly attacked Sir Keir over his resistance to another national probe, said the Prime Minister had to be 'led by the nose to make the correct decision'. 'Keir Starmer doesn't know what he thinks unless an official report has told him so,' she said. 'Just like he dismissed concerns about the winter fuel payment and then had to U-turn, just like he needed the Supreme Court to tell him what a woman is, he had to be led by the nose to make the correct decision here. 'I've been repeatedly calling for a full National Inquiry since January. It's about time he recognised he made a mistake and apologised for six wasted months. 'But this must not be the end of the matter. There are many, many more questions that need answering to ensure this inquiry is done properly and quickly. 'Many survivors of the grooming gangs will be relieved that this is finally happening, but they need a resolution soon not in several years' time. Justice delayed is justice denied.'

CBI arrests EPFO officer in Odisha for accepting Rs 10,000 bribe to approve employer's application
ANI 14 Jun 2025, 20:35 GMT+10 Ganjam (Odisha) [India], June 14 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended the accused Senior Social Security Assistant (SSSA), EPFO Regional Office, Berhampur, District Ganjam, Odisha, while accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,000/- from the complainant, said the agency. CBI registered a case against the accused on June 12 based on a complaint dated the same date. It was alleged that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000/ from the complainant to approve the Authorised Signatory Application of the Employer, i.e., a private company, on the EPFO Portal. After negotiation, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 10,000/--from the complainant. CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed. Investigation is continuing, said the CBI. (ANI)

Air India disaster death toll climbs to 270
The UK-bound flight crashed seconds after take-off from Ahmedabad, killing all but one of 242 passengers The death toll from the Air India crash on Thursday has risen to 270, making it one of the deadliest disasters of its kind in the country's history. The plane slammed into a medical college dormitory, leaving one survivor from the flight. Search and rescue workers recovered more bodies from the site late Friday, pushing the death toll higher, officials told media on Saturday. The authorities had earlier put the body count at 265. "Around 270 bodies have been brought to the civil hospital so far from the plane crash site," Dr. Dhaval Gamet at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad told reporters on Saturday. He added that the only survivor was still under observation for some of his wounds. In an interview with India's public broadcaster Doodarshan on Saturday, the survivor, 40-year-old UK national of Indian origin Ramesh Vishwashkumar said he "jumped out" of the plans seconds after it crashed when he realized there was some space near his seat. He said he couldn't believe he'd made it out of the burning plane alive, even as he saw people dying around him. Families of the victims are still waiting to receive the bodies of their loved ones. A relative of several passengers who are believed to have died in the crash told RT on Friday that he had given his blood for DNA profiling upon arrival in Ahmedabad, but has not yet received any news about the deceased. "I'm here since yesterday; I gave my blood test. So far there were no bodies of them," he said. Doctors have been working without breaks to gather dental samples from the deceased to run identification checks and conduct DNA profiling, Hindustan Times reported. The process of handing over bodies has been slow because of the extent of the damage. "Some of the bodies are charred beyond recognition," one official told the newspaper. The flight, operated by Air India, had just taken off from Ahmedabad when it lost altitude and crashed into a medical college dormitory. Engine failure and poor visibility have been cited as possible factors, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Authorities from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation are examining flight data and cockpit recordings retrieved on Friday. Meanwhile, New Delhi's aviation regulator has asked Air India to carry out maintenance on its Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft immediately. These include a review of all take-off parameters and aircraft checks over the last two weeks, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
