Scooter Hobbs column: Another LSU invasion of Omaha ends with CWS title

American Press7 hours ago

OMAHA, Neb. — Maybe Charles Schwab Field really is Alex Box North.
Omaha — Geauxmaha, they call in late June — has long been LSU's own personal summer resort.
So the Tigers were making themselves right at home Sunday afternoon, not only with the familiar national championship dogpile, but — and this seemed like an added touch in their adopted city — a victory lap around the stadium rim, a rite more familiar to Baton Rouge for the send-offs than the coronations in Omaha.
Maybe when it's your eighth championship party, you have to spice things up a little.
So the Tigers were circling the stadium's outfield rim, donning their t-shirts and leaping high to slap skin with adoring fans, taking it all in from the hordes who fled Louisiana — and those rugged evacuees, sun-burned as they were, deserved some team love after enduring the Louisiana-style heat til the joyous end.
It didn't seem to matter.
All was well.
Purple and gold has taken over this city before, but never in my mind with the numbers and saturation of this year. You wondered if anybody was left back home on the bayou.
'Calling Baton Rouge,' was blaring in the background.
And this year the Omaha invasion upped the ante when they pulled up 30-foot long, 17-foot high float. Went by the name Mardi Gras Mike. He couldn't get in the game, but the float was all over Omaha, seemingly wandering around downtown 24 hours a day.
Can't be Louisiana without a parade, right?
The locals, LSU's famed Cornfield Alumni, acted like they'd never seen such a thing.
You'd have thought the circus was rolling through town.
Or Mardi Gras.
Anyway, it fit in well with the beads fans have tossing around here for years and years.
LSU's good ol' days were back.
Shoot, Skip Bertman himself was here to explain it all to a TV reporter.
'The difference at LSU,' he said in that familiar cadence,' is the players think they're going to win because they think they're supposed to win … I think other teams fold a little towards the end of the game. And they can't do what we do in their mind.'
It's hard to prove him wrong. He invented whatever the secret formula is and now Jay Johnson seems to have adapted it for a new era, a different ballpark in Charles Schwab Field.
Coastal Carolina put up a pesky and hardy fight. Arkansas is just as good of a team as the Tigers yet collapsed at the end.
But LSU was the last team celebrating … again.
But by the looks of the postgame festivities, I suppose it never gets old.
'You never assume anything,' Johnson said.
And you get the feeling eight is not enough.
I wouldn't put it past Johnson.
He seems to have figured out Charles Schwab Field, which so often confounded the Tigers in the early years when the event moved there in 2011.
Gorilla Ball doesn't play well there. The small-ball Chanticleers actually scored all three of their runs on home runs, while the Tigers, who dig the long ball as much as anyone, scratched across their five runs.
And Johnson never stops hunting for the right pieces to each year's puzzle — mostly he's partial to future Major League talent, but also the right fit.
His CWS postgame press conference included several shameless recruiting plugs, which was probably overkill.
He can pretty much get who he wants.
Exhibit A was sitting next to him on the podium.
Anthony Eyanson was the title game winning pitcher, a transfer from UC-San Diego. His was the arm Johnson knew he had to have, fretted over it, probably pestered him and was ready to throw a dogpile when he landed him.
Eyanson had a different version. His story is that he couldn't believe his luck when Johnson first called, thought it was a dream, maybe a practical joke.
'I didn't believe it until I talked to him on the phone,' he said of the opportunity. 'Then he would text me every day, started sending me pictures of the pinstripe jerseys.'
Johnson worried about nothing. Eyanson couldn't get to LSU fast enough (after pinching himself).
There are other similar tales and Johnson probably has a bigger advantage in the NIL era with a school with an administration and a fan base that supports baseball.
So don't be surprised if these Louisiana mass exoduses to Geauxmaha become even more regular.

Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson predicts Kenny Pickett will get first shot as team's starting QB

The Cleveland Browns have a four-pronged quarterback competition this offseason, complete with a pair of rookies, the backup quarterback of last season's Super Bowl champs and a 40-year-old veteran who already temporarily rescued the franchise once as NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2023. With Deshaun Watson still recovering from the Achilles tear he suffered this past January, the spotlight is on Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders, Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco. Advertisement Wide receiver Diontae Johnson, a one-time Pro Bowler who signed with the Browns this spring, has a prediction for which quarterback will come out on top this summer. "I think they are going to roll with Kenny for right now," Johnson said while appearing on the "Sports and Suits" podcast earlier this month. "I've been seeing Kenny going like right now with the ones. Then Joe will come in," Johnson said. "I think they are probably going to roll with [Kenny] just to see like he's coming off a season with Philly and having a Super Bowl. So, I think they are going to stick with him through the preseason. Then you know they can live with Joe and what he brings to the table." Johnson is hoping to turn the page after a 2024 campaign that was memorable for all the wrong reasons. He split time with three teams: the Carolina Panthers, the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. He made headlines in his second stop when the Ravens suspended him one game for refusing to enter a Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Johnson's best days came in Pittsburgh, where he spent 2019-23. Advertisement Johnson and Pickett were Steelers teammates for two seasons from 2022-23. During that span, Pickett went 14-10 as the starter, and Johnson caught a total of 137 passes for 1,599 yards and five touchdowns. The Steelers drafted Pickett out of University of Pittsburgh with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 draft. Pickett got the first chance to succeed a newly-retired Ben Roethlisberger but, despite his winning record, posted a meager 13:13 touchdown-to-interception ratio in his two seasons as QB1. Pittsburgh moved on from Pickett ahead of the 2024 season, trading him to the Philadelphia Eagles that offseason. The Steelers, meanwhile, entered last season with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in their quarterback room, neither of whom are still with the team. Pickett backed up Eagles star Jalen Hurts, appearing in five games during a Super Bowl season. He completed 25-of-42 passes (59.5%) while recording 291 yards through the air, two touchdowns and one interception. He won his only start of the season, a 41-7 drubbing of the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys. Advertisement Pickett even got to take the field in the Super Bowl, stepping in for garbage time snaps during the Eagles' blowout victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. He took his ring with him to Cleveland in March when the Browns traded for him in exchange for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the 2025 fifth-round pick Cleveland had acquired from Detroit. Pickett is only 27 years old. He could be next in an increasingly-long line of former first-round quarterbacks finding success in the second and third acts of their NFL careers. But in order for Johnson's summer prediction to come true, Pickett will have to beat out a still-strong-armed Flacco, plus a 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist in Gabriel as well as Sanders, last year's Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.

Saints veteran Cameron Jordan laments NFL taunting rule: 'Let us celebrate'

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan wants to bring back a little fun to the game of football. During an appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York over the weekend, the eight-time Pro Bowler gave an honest answer when asked what he believed was the "dumbest rule" in the league today. "For the fans, I think it's excessive celebration," an animated Jordan responded. "Like, boy if you don't let them celebrate. They scored a touchdown, they dragged three defenders on their back – Let them… I get a sack on a quarterback, give me five seconds. In fact, put the spotlight on me." The NFL rule book lists taunting and excessive celebrations as unsportsmanlike conduct. The 2021 season saw the most taunting flags in at least two decades with a total of 61, which prompted the league to crack down on players in the subsequent seasons. ESPN reported in 2022, that of the 61 flags, only five met the league's standard. According to the 2022 season saw a dramatic decrease, with 21 taunting flags. In 2023, that number dropped to 17 and last season it was up to 20. But for the Saints veteran, players should be allowed to participate in a little harmless taunting and celebrating. "Let us celebrate," Jordan continued. "It's OK to taunt. Bring back taunting. Let me talk my s---."
