The dividing bridge at the centre of Salt Lake violence

Kolkata: Salt Lake residents turned jittery after houses and gardens were vandalised on Wednesday, when a group of slum dwellers from the Kestopur Canal Road area hurled stones at police and targeted homes across the canal.
The violence started moments after a 20-year-old app-based bike rider was killed when a private car rammed into his two-wheeler near the bridge connecting Salt Lake's AK Block with Kestopur Canal Road.
While biker Soumen Mondal died, the pillion rider escaped with minor injuries.
The new bridge seems to be the bone of contention. Vehicles speeding down the bridge and chaotic traffic management, long-standing socio-economic tensions and visible social divide—bungalow-style houses in Salt Lake on one side of the canal and rows of shanties on the other side in Kestopur—are being seen as possible triggers for the clash.
People living on both sides of the canal seemed united in their anger at police and the social divide, albeit each group had their own point of view.

"Ever since the bridge opened, large cars keep speeding past our homes, scaring our children. Earlier we could sit by the roadside. Now we can't even sleep peacefully at homes," said Sandhya Maji, who lives at Ghoshpara in Kestopur. Akash Mondal, who lives at Siddharthanagar in Kestopur, is apparently upset over being forced to come under police glare.

Before the bridge was built, the strip of road in Kestopur did not have a direct link to main roads and consequently, remained away from cop monitoring.
"Earlier, people riding their bikes in the locality did not have to bother about rules. Now, police fine us for almost every other reason—be it riding without helmets or skipping a signal," he said.
The bridge, opened in Oct 2022, has become a key link for vehicles to and from Salt Lake and Kestopur and Baguiati.
Pratik Banerjee, a resident of Sarat Abasan in Salt Lake, said, "What happened on Wednesday was scary. We shut our doors and windows, fearing attack on our house." Banerjee, a retired govt official, claimed the bridge had opened the door to more criminal activity, with a majority of perpetrators entering Salt Lake from the Kestopur side. "Petty theft has gone up. Criminals now have an easy exit from the township. Even disputes among slum dwellers sometimes spill over into Salt Lake.
Police should intensify patrolling to prevent vandalism," he said.
Motorists claimed traffic management lapses at that spot could have contributed to Wednesday's accident. At the crossroad, there was no 'stop' line or zebra crossing. A traffic sergeant and two civic volunteers were usually deployed there and they struggled to regulate the rush of vehicles from the four sides. The CCTV footage released by police showed biker Mondal stopping just before the signal, when the private vehicle hit him.
The vehicle dragged Mondal to the roadside railing before both the vehicles burst into flames, leading to Mondal's death. "Had there been a 'stop' line and the bike had halted behind it, the biker could be saved," said Babla Sarkar, a motorist who drove past the bridge on Thursday.
Lokenath Debnath, a delivery executive, said faulty signals gave bikers entering Salt Lake the impression of a free left turn, bringing them onto the path of oncoming traffic.

Thane MACT awards ₹20.49 lakh to family of pedestrian killed in 2013 accident

Thane: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane has directed the owner of a container truck and its insurer to pay ₹20.49 lakh as compensation to the family of a 35-year-old labourer who died after being run over in Bhiwandi in December 2013. Presiding Officer R.V. Mohite held that the accident occurred due to the rash and negligent driving of the container by its driver. According to the petition, on the night of December 8, 2013, the labourer was walking along the left side of the road near Oswal Tower, Anjur Phata, when the speeding container veered onto the side road and hit him. Why is the state of Louisiana suing Roblox?

(Image via Getty Images) Roblox recently has been undergoing a lot of legal scrutiny. Adding to the troubles, Louisiana authorities have filed a lawsuit against Roblox, the online gaming platform. The state alleged the platform has fundamentally failed to fulfil its duties and is prioritizing growth over the essential safeguards. Here is all that's been reportedly available to date about the Louisiana Roblox lawsuit and the claims made in it. Why is Louisiana suing Roblox? A lawsuit led by Attorney General Liz Murrill reportedly alleges that Roblox has been knowingly prioritizing profits over child safety. The platform that hosts millions of young users has Roblox age verification issues, parental controls concerns and insufficient warning about the predatory risks on Roblox. As per the lawsuit, it makes it a hunting ground for the predators who target children. Arguing further, Murill stated that such negligence creates an environment wherein harmful content thrives. It proves the failure of the platform to protect young users from severe online dangers. Specific games like Diddy Party, Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe and Escape to Epstein Island were cited as examples of the inappropriate content that remains accessible to minors via Roblox. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo As per the authorities, such experiences, which are often categorized as suitable for all ages, contained sexually explicit material. The suit further described simulated activities, including exploitative material, open trading, and child gang rape. The lawsuit further pointed to certain cases wherein predators use the voice-alteration technology for deceiving children—a recent arrest made in Livingston Parish. Despite the claims of moderation made by the platform, the state has argued that Roblox safety measures prove to be insufficient for preventing exploitation. Roblox's alleged neglect, despite receiving widespread warnings, enables the predators directly. The complaint specifically accused the company of creating dangerous circumstances through its inactions and actions. It pointed to Roblox CEO David Baszucki and his encouragement of adult-oriented content development, as the evidence of priority imbalance. Roblox's pattern of failure causes real-world harm Louisiana's case is not the first one for Roblox, when the platform faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, a 13-year-old girl got abducted from Iowa by a man she met through the gaming platform. Incidents like these of these incidents prompted countries like China, Qatar, Turkey, etc., to take Roblox legal scrutiny and ban the platform over child safety concerns. They all believe that the rapid growth of the platform that boasts 111 million monthly users has outpaced its ability to enforce online gaming safety protocols. While Roblox did introduce some features like age verification tests and AI monitoring, critics suggest that these steps are reactive and not preventive. The current lawsuit by the state of Louisiana seeks penalties and demands stricter security measures, like mandatory age checks, parental notification, etc. If they are successful, this case can set a precedent for how online platforms are regulated for protecting minors. It can even force Roblox to overhaul safety policies, in the absence of which they would face legal consequences. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

'Sick and warped': White House trashes latest Trump-Epstein gossip. It involves Princess Diana

Michael Wolff's latest Trump-Epstein gossip has Princess Diana at the center. Michael Wolff, the 'disgraced' biographer of President Donald Trump has now dropped a bombshell of a claim involving Trump, Jeffrey Epstein and Princess Diana. At 'Inside Trump's Head' podcast, Wolff said both Epstein and Trump attempted to woo the princess and there was a competition between the two over who could sleep with her. 'They had a competition, Trump and Epstein,' Wolff said. 'Of who would be the one, the first one to sleep with Princess Diana? ... They just understood, what could you get from these people? Both Trump and Epstein. What can you get from somebody, is the question you would always ask about anybody.' Michael Wolff routinely fabricates stories, responds White House White House communications director Steven Cheung called Michael Wolff a "lying sack of s**t" and a fraud who routinely fabricates stories. "He routinely fabricates stories originating from his sick and warped imagination, only possible because he has a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain," the White House said. Major row over Wolff's claim on Melania-Epstein Wolff has been at the center of the Epstein row as he claimed that Donald Trump met Melania through Epstein. The Daily Beast which published the article first took it down and apologized for any confusion or misunderstanding. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo But former president Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden repeated those claims citing Wolff. Melania Trump has threatened to sue Biden for more than $1bn. President Trump also commented on the issue, and said he gave his lawyers to Melania. "Well, I said go forward, you know, I've done pretty well on these lawsuits lately, and I said, go forward with it," Trump said. Hunter Biden escalated his row with Melania and said he won't apologize. "F**k that. That' not going to happen," Hunter said.
