
Skellig Michael boat trips can resume, court rules
Mr Justice Garrett Simons granted an application by the Office of Public Works (OPW) to lift an automatic suspension on landing at the Unesco heritage site and former monastic island, which was also used as a film location for the Star Wars movies, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

The order will allow the OPW to enter into a legally binding contract with each of 15 boat operators who were successful in the public competition for permits to land on the island off the Kerry coast. The landing season runs from mid-May to the end of September each year.
Those landing permits were automatically suspended when two unsuccessful bidders brought a High Court challenge to the decision. The OPW then had to apply to the court asking that the stay be lifted pending hearing of the substantive challenge.
The unsuccessful bidders, Atlantic Endeavour Ltd and SMBT Ltd, trading as Skellig Michael Boat Trips, disagreed with the OPW interpretation of the legal effect of the automatic suspension.
They contended that there are a number of mechanisms open whereby landing permits might legitimately be granted to the successful tenderers for the balance of the 2025 season, while preserving their own right to challenge the allocation of landing permits for the 2026 and subsequent seasons.

Mr Justice Simons heard the application to lift the suspension this week and on Thursday ordered that it be lifted.
He said the practical effect of this order is that it will now be legally permissible for the OPW to issue landing permits to the 15 successful tenderers for the balance of the 2025 season.
This will allow for the commencement of passenger landings at Skellig Michael, or Sceilg Mhichíl in Irish.
He said his judgment entails no finding whatsoever on whether the outcome of the tender process allows the OPW to confine the right to land passengers on Sceilg Mhichíl to the 15 successful tenderers for a five-year period.

The proper interpretation of the request for tender and associated documentation, and the legal consequences of the tender process, remain open for debate at the trial of the action, he said.
The judgment, he said "goes no further" than deciding that the execution of concession contracts does not result in the crystallisation of a contractual right on the part of the successful tenderers to exclusive landing rights for the 2026 and subsequent seasons.
He said the significance of this finding is that the unsuccessful tenderers are not relegated to a claim for certain damages in respect of the 2026 and subsequent seasons.
The only right which the OPW seeks to translate into a concluded contract, prior to the determination of the full High Court challenge, is confined to the 2025 landing season,he said.
He said he was listing the substantive action for the alleged breaches of the public procurement legislation in July.

Princess Anne shows shameless Andrew what it means to be a royal
Last week was a tale of two royals: the grafter and the grifter. The largely unsung part of the story concerns the customary, good-humoured way the Princess Royal carried out official engagements in Dublin with minimum fuss. While visiting Irish president Michael D Higgins on Wednesday the thrifty HRH was invited to sign the visitors' book at his official residence and said: 'Am I wasting an entire page of paper?' Her host, a lifelong Leftie, replied: 'You deserve the whole page.' As indeed she does. It's hard to imagine anyone, let alone a republican socialist, offering such a sentiment to Anne's spoilt brother, Prince Andrew. The disgraced prince continues to drag the Windsors ever further into the mire, courtesy of an explosive new book about him and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York by Andrew Lownie. The tawdry details manage to be jaw-droppingly comprehensive and at times tediously predictable all at once. Most of us knew 'Randy Andy' was boorish and sexually incontinent to the point he may well have slept with an allegedly trafficked young woman. We were also aware there's no Mr Moneybags so disreputable the prince won't tap the geezer for cash, or even go for a chummy stroll after he's been jailed for 'procuring a child for prostitution'. So, the fact the book adds fresh details about Andrew's grubby sex life, profligate ex-wife and potential serious breaches of national and royal security is merely the mouldy cherry on the cupcake of his indiscretions. But it seems to me the worst scandal is the fact we waste more energy on scoundrels than role models. Especially when a blazing national heroine like Princess Anne is about to turn 75 and still zips past the entire royal pack in terms of public service, like a filly version of Frankel at Ascot. Over the course of 2024, she carried out 474 official engagements (over 100 more than cancer-stricken Charles and almost 200 more than Edward), despite being hospitalised in June for concussion. She was back in the saddle (pun fully intended) straight afterwards, with a visit to the Riding for the Disabled Association national championships. The Princess has championed the charity since 1985, with similarly devoted patronage to Save the Children, St John Ambulance and more than 300 other charities and associations. This surely makes her the Gordon Gekko of public service – leisure is for wimps. And fashion is for dupes. Anne has recycled favourite garments for decades and maintained the same svelte figure since her 20s. No Mounjaro, crazy diets or promotion deal with WeightWatchers à la Fergie; just a will of iron. Then there's Anne's young professional achievements in a family where junior members are often more noted for holidays than hard grind. She not only carried off the individual gold medal at the 1971 European Eventing Championships at Burghley but went on to represent Britain at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, becoming a heroine for a generation of schoolgirls. (Yes, me.) But what many of us cherish most in the princess is her deliciously blunt manner. Take the dark episode when she was almost kidnapped by Ian Ball in 1974 after he shot her chauffeur and bodyguard. Ball aimed his pistol straight at Anne and said: 'I want you to come with me for a day or two,' earning the withering riposte: 'Not bloody likely.' She's also famed for a 'naff off!', directed at the paparazzi who snapped her tumble at the 1982 Badminton Horse Trials – although the actual term used was much saltier. Then there's the claim she won't curtsey to Queen Camilla and is alleged to have said: 'You're the Queen Consort, not the Queen.' If that's the truth, good for her. Much as I admire Camilla, there's no reason on earth why a woman of Anne's age and standing should bow the knee to a newly-crowned second spouse. Although no exchange quite outdoes the time Cherie Blair suggested the princess could drop the formal 'Mrs Blair' and address her by her Christian name. Anne swiftly put her in her place: 'I'd rather not, it's not how I was raised.' And while Andrew spent decades lobbying for Beatrice and Eugenie to keep the titles and public-purse privileges he felt were their birthright, like a security detail, Anne quietly decided there was zero need for her children to be part of the royal circus. As a result, Peter and Zara Phillips appear to be the jolliest and best-adjusted kids of that generation of Windsors; the only ones you could imagine wheeling a barrow full of horse-dung as a matter of course. In Anne and her family, you see happy echoes of Prince Philip, who rebelled against stuffy palace protocol and was happiest carriage driving, or outdoors with his barbecue. Added to these virtues Anne appears, like most horsey people, to have a refreshingly uncomplicated attitude towards sex. While Andrew's taste in women could best be described as indiscriminate (Lownie's book suggests his lovers total at least 1,000), his sister is drawn to old-fashioned manly virtues. Her taste runs to soldiers, sailors, protection officers and horsemen. Dashing Andrew Parker Bowles is an ex and she's alleged to have had an affair with her former bodyguard, Peter Cross. She met her discreet second husband, naval officer Timothy Laurence, when he became equerry to the late Queen. By December, they will have been married for a steadfast 33 years. But it's two state occasions that truly cemented Anne's place in the royal firmament. Firstly, her supremely dignified yet touching response to the death of the Queen: 'I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother's life. It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journey.' And then her glorious role as King Charles's official bodyguard at his coronation. Forget ludicrous Penny Mordaunt in her show-off's cape, the female star of the show was the Princess Royal as Colonel of the Blues and Royals, leading 6,000 members of the military on horseback at an age when many Britons struggle to mount the stairs let alone a charger. In fact, the worst you can say of Anne in her 75 years of service is that she appeared on the dismal It's a Royal Knockout in 1987, having been strong-armed by her brother Edward who was trying to develop a career in TV. What the decades since have proved is that the Princess Royal was born to be team captain, while her brother Andrew has sunk from joker to total loser.

Adrian Dunbar: ‘On holiday during the Troubles, everything felt freer'
Adrian Dunbar, 67, is an actor, director and singer from Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. His film and television credits include My Left Foot, The Crying Game, Ashes to Ashes and Hear My Song, which he also co-wrote. Dunbar played the role of Ted Hastings in Line of Duty, rumoured to be returning next year. He lives in Highgate, north London, with his wife, Anna. He is stepfather to Anna's son Ted, 45, and they also share a daughter, Madeleine, 37. I had something of a Mark Twain childhood in the Sixties. Summers were all about fishing on lakes and holidaying in Bundoran, a popular surf town on Ireland's west coast. My home town, Enniskillen, might only be a few miles away from the Northern Irish border, but crossing over felt like entering into a much freer, more open and easier society. This was during the Troubles, so going on holiday had a kind of double whammy: you'd hit the open air and seaside, and you could just run free. Bundoran had a mini-Blackpool vibe with slot machines, a huge dancehall called the Astoria, rides, and piped music (it was often the Beatles). All these decades later, Bundoran is still a large feature of my life, as I have a house nearby. I always look forward to returning to Belfast when filming Line of Duty. Vicky [McClure], Martin [Compston] and I stay in the same apartment block. We're up too early for a big breakfast during the week, but I'll often cook us a fry-up on a Saturday morning. • What to do in New Zealand I've visited some fantastic places — some for work, others not. At drama school in the early 1980s, I had a very lovely girlfriend called Anat Topol, daughter of Chaim Topol, known for playing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Anat and I visited Israel together on a number of occasions; on one trip we travelled to Galilee and Kamon, then on to Be'er Sheva, Eilat and all the way down to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. I was introduced to a lot of very interesting Israelis who gave me an amazing insight into the country, and I remain friends with them to this day. When the kids were young, around 30 years ago, we took them out of school on an extended holiday for three months — we thought, this is for their education, so let's take them out and just do it. We started in Thailand, where we visited Bangkok and Chiang Mai and several small villages along the way. After a couple of weeks we flew to Sydney, where my wife Anna is from, to meet all her relatives. From there we went up north to Cape Tribulation, Byron Bay, Manly and Watsons Bay, ending the trip in Bali, Ubud and Candi Dasa in Indonesia. It's a trip we still look back on, and it was really educational. • Best hotels in Bali In 2005 I filmed Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped for the BBC in New Zealand and Tasmania. In New Zealand we filmed in Alexandra, Auckland, Oamaru and Queenstown, where during my time off I set out alone on a six-day tramp through the hills in snowy weather conditions. I stocked up on nuts, bread, cheese and tinned sardines and set off for Glenorchy, a lovely spot at the start of the Greenstone cable track, planning to stay in these huts along the route that you have to pre-book. I trekked the first 14km without any issues, arriving late at night to the first hut, and I was on the road early again the next morning. The scenery was spectacular and it looked like the sort of vista you'd see in Scotland or the west of Ireland, except suddenly there would be a 4ft-long mountain parrot ripping the bark off a tree, looking for grubs. • Best places to visit in Thailand When I reached the next hut I realised I didn't have enough food, because I was burning a lot of calories wading through deep snow. Fortunately four old Kiwis arrived and took pity on me, giving me a delicious bowl of rice pudding with raisins and cinnamon. Over the next few days I built fires, helped an American boy who had fallen into a hole and joined forces with two paratroopers for part of the walk. It was a fantastic trip — I loved it. We film Ridley on the Lancashire Moors, and during filming I stay in central Manchester, in an apartment around Cutting Room Square. I love the city — there are so many great restaurants and bars and the people chat to you. A friend of mine owns This &That, an Indian restaurant in the town centre, which is great value: for £7.50 you get rice, three curries and a garlic naan. • Where to eat in Manchester One of the reasons I got excited about Ridley was to be in the moors, among the old industrial wasteland and the beautiful hills and valleys. We shoot during winter, which is quite bleak, but there's a stark beauty that's wonderful. The secret story of my grandpa's life as a prisoner of war in Japan
L ast year, while looking through my grandfather Joe Hazel's papers, which our mother had given to the Imperial War Museum, we discovered a small black notebook. It was written in a prisoner of war camp more than 80 years ago but its contents read more like a holiday brochure than a diary of the deprivations and cruelties that PoWs had suffered at the hands of their Japanese captors during the Second World War. Each page listed holiday trips, with tips on places to stay, things to do and how to get there. 'Glenbeigh Hotel — Shore of Dingle Bay, about 1 mile from sea, a lovely strand,' read one entry, in Joe's neat handwriting. 'Good holiday for children but go in summer months to avoid rain.'
