Two unusual formations will be visible on the Moon on Wednesday night, with a giant X and V appearing on the lunar surface.
The rare celestial event will be observable for around four hours as the Moon approaches its first quarter moon phase, with both letters forming from sunlight hitting crater's on the Moon's surface at just the right angle.
The lunar V appears when light illuminates the Ukert crater, while the lunar X is formed from the Bianchini, La Caille and Purbach craters.
The lunar X and lunar V will only be observable through a telescope or binoculars pointed at the Moon's terminator – the line separating its light and dark side.
This line is typically the most interesting part of the Moon for amateur astronomers to observe, as the shadows help to emphasize the topography.
'The lunar surface appears different nearer the terminator because there the Sun is nearer the horizon and therefore causes shadows to become increasingly long,' Nasa's website explains.
'These shadows make it easier for us to discern structure, giving us depth cues so that the two-dimensional image, when dominated by shadows, appears almost three-dimensional.
'Therefore, as the Moon fades from light to dark, shadows not only tell us the high from the low, but become noticeable for increasingly shorter structures. For example, many craters appear near the terminator because their height makes them easier to discern there.'
The lunar X and lunar V phenomenon will appear from 4:41am on 3 July (11:41pm EDT on 2 July).
The skies over the British Isles are expected to be mostly clear at this time, according to the latest weather forecast from the Met Office, though parts of Wales and the west coast of Ireland will be obscured by cloud.
'The Werner X does not leap out all at once but gradually appears over an interval of two hours and 20 minutes as the Sun rises on the spot,' astronomer David Chapman noted in a paper on the subject.
'Watching this is either excruciatingly slow (if you are in a hurry) or exceedingly quick (if you are attempting to sketch the scene). Remember, the Sun rises about 30 times slower on the Moon.'

A mysterious object from outside our solar system has just been spotted by astronomers heading towards our planet. Harvard physicist Avi Loeb revealed that the object is expected to pass by Earth on December 17, speeding through the solar system at more than 41 miles per second (roughly 150,000 miles per hour). That means the unidentified object, which scientists are calling A11pl3Z, is moving too fast for it to get caught in the gravitational pull of our sun or any other planet. A11pl3Z's unusual course and speed was first spotted by astronomer Sam Deen in late June, however, it has just been flagged by the International Astronomical Union after its interstellar origins were confirmed. Loeb believes A11pl3Z could be a large space rock or a comet, but astronomers are still figuring that out. It's estimated to be about 12 miles wide. That makes it much larger than the last two otherworldly objects that flew through our solar system, Oumuamua and the comet Borisov. Oumuamua was only about 300 to 1,300 feet long and Borisov's core was about half a mile in diameter. Like Oumuamua in 2017, A11pl3Z could soon start stirring more speculation that the object is man-made and sent here from another solar system with intelligent life. In 2021, Loeb, the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard, theorized that Oumuamua could have 'been meant to scan signals from all viewing directions,' looking for sensors from a long-lost receiver previously placed on Earth. The first recorded interstellar object set off alarm bells among UFO researchers after scientists discovered Oumuamua was not a known comet or asteroid. 'It was inferred to have a disk-like shape and to exhibit non-gravitational acceleration, raising the possibility of an artificial origin,' Loeb wrote in an article on Medium Wednesday. If A11pl3Z is a space rock, it's surprisingly massive compared to the other two interstellar objects that have passed by Earth. However, scientists don't project that the mystery object will get anywhere near Earth. On its current trajectory, it'll come within 2.4 astronomical units of the planet (223 million miles). An astronomical unit (AU) is equal to the distance between Earth and the sun, 93 million miles. Technically, A11pl3Z is already in the solar system, and is currently 3.8 AU away from Earth as of July 2. In October, the object from outside the solar system is expected to make its closest pass to a planet, coming within 0.4 AU (37 million miles) of Mars. Scientists don't believe A11pl3Z poses any threat to Earth. At 12 miles in length, that's good news because the object would fall into the category of a 'planet killer' - likely causing an extinction-level event if it struck the Earth. 3rd interstellar object discovered? Loeb explained that the interstellar visitor could be a comet, just like Borisov in 2019. The physicist said that it could have a smaller core surrounded by a bright cloud of gas and dust. This would reflect sunlight and make the mass appear larger to our telescopes. A11pl3Z's extreme speed will only give astronomers a short window to study the mysterious object before it leaves the solar system in 2026. In that time, scientists will look to gather information on its trajectory using telescopes like the Rubin Observatory in Chile, and possibly the James Webb Space Telescope in space. They'll hope to confirm A11pl3Z is staying on its expected route, passing the sun in later October, swinging by Earth at a safe distance in December, and then flying past Jupiter in March 2026. Once it gets closer, scientist should be able to determine what A11pl3Z actually is - an asteroid, a comet, or something else entirely. Mark Norris at the University of Central Lancashire told New Scientist: 'They really do whip through the solar system at ridiculous speeds. They're really fleeting and you are severely limited in what you can learn about them.'

The US has drawn up plans to breed billions of flies to attempt to eradicate a flesh-eating maggot. The maggot, the larvae of the New World Screwworm fly, is threatening to wreak havoc on the US beef industry, as well as endangering wildlife, household pets and in rare cases, people. American scientists will breed, and then sterilise hundreds of adult male screwworms, before dumping them from aircraft over Mexico and southern Texas. The plan is for the female screwworms to have no other choice but to breed with the sterilised males, eradicating the chance of any flesh-eating young being produced. The larvae hatch shortly after the fly lays its eggs and start devouring anything nearby, before developing into adult flies. The maggots are endemic in an array of countries in south and Central America as well as Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. 'Exceptionally good technology' The US believed it had eradicated the screwworm from its own territory as far back as 1966, but there are fears that it is spreading north again. This led to the US banning the import of live cattle, horses and bison across its southern border in September. Slightly larger than a housefly, they are known as screwworms because of their ability to burrow into flesh. The US Department of Agriculture is breeding male flies, which are then sterilised with radiation before being released. They then mate with females, but because the males are sterile, the eggs do not hatch, and it is hoped, the population dies out. 'It's an exceptionally good technology,' said Edwin Burgess, an assistant professor at the University of Florida who studies parasites in animals, particularly livestock. 'It's an all-time great in terms of translating science to solve some kind of large problem.' The screwworm fly factory in Mexico is due to be operational in a year, with the distribution centre planned for Texas. There is already a fly factory in Panama, capable of breeding up to 117 million flies a week. But that is now considered inadequate by the US, which wants to quadruple production and has earmarked nearly $30 million for the project. The maggots' flesh-eating capabilities can also be useful. In 2019, the UK government funded a programme which would send medicinal maggots to war zones, where they would be used to clean wounds, adopting a technique once used by Australian Aborigines. They are also being used in the NHS, resurrecting a practice which died out with the advent of antibiotics in the 1940s.
