Marriott planning Serengeti safari camp

West Australian07-05-2025

Marriott is planning to open the world's first Autograph Collection safari camp in Tanzania's Serengeti.
Expected to be complete late in 2025, Mapito Safari Camp will be a landmark moment for Marriott.
Officially called 'Mapito Safari Camp, Serengeti, Autograph Collection', the camp will be near the Fort Ikoma gate of Serengeti National Park.
Between Central Serengeti and the western migration corridor for wildlife, it is on the Great Migration route. Vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope will pass close to the camp between May and July each year.
But the spot is full of wildlife all year of course — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and giraffe. 'The Serengeti's scale, beauty, and cultural heritage will make an unforgettable setting for a property that will embody the individuality and character that Autograph Collection is known for,' says Jerome Briet, chief development officer, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International.
The camp is expected to have 16 tented suites, including a two-bedroom villa.
Each suite will have an outdoor deck, fire pit and retractable roof for open-air stargazing, which is a first for the area.
The plans for the camp also include a spa, fitness centre and swimming pool.
Multiple dining options include The Boma, a communal restaurant inspired by traditional bonfire gatherings. And the design team aims to draw not only from the camp's geographic position, but from the local Ikoma culture.
They aim to incorporate sustainable practices that support conservation and minimise impact. It is planned that guests will have meaningful encounters with the Ikoma tribe. There will be daytime game drives, walking safaris, stifling air balloon flights, bush dining and night safaris.
The camp developer Rishen Patel says, 'This camp will offer an intimate and immersive experience that reflects both the natural wonder of the region and the timeless storytelling and craftsmanship of the brand.' Autograph Collection's global portfolio currently includes more than 330 hotels selected for their 'vision, passion and unique perspectives on design and hospitality'.

Rory McIlroy reveals major change he's considering ahead of the US Open amid his 'concerning' form after failing to make the cut in Canada

Rory McIlroy admitted he is 'concerned' by his form and will consider ditching his driver going into the US Open after missing the cut in Canada with one of the worst rounds of his career. The world No 2, who was trialling a new driver configuration after his compliancy debacle at the PGA Championship last month, hit only four fairways in compiling a second-round 78 at the tournament he won in 2024. That left McIlroy on nine over par and with a free weekend to ponder a mountain of questions before heading to the season's third major at Oakmont, which punishes loose drives more than any other course on the roster. 'Of course it concerns me,' said McIlroy, whose card included a quadruple bogey on the fifth after a wild shot from the tee and a lost ball over the green off his approach. 'You don't want to shoot high scores like the one I did today. I felt like I came here, obviously with a new driver, thinking that sort of was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn't. 'Obviously going to Oakmont next week, what you need to do more than anything else there is hit fairways. I'm still sort of searching for the missing piece off the tee. Obviously for me, when I get that part of the game clicking, then everything falls into place for me. Right now that isn't. Yeah, that's a concern going into next week.' Having dumped his current model of TaylorMade driver once already this season, McIlroy could soon be dropping it for a second time as he searches for an option that more closely resembles the feel of the club he used to win at Augusta in April. The latter's clubface wore to thin to pass compliancy tests ahead of the PGA Championship. McIlroy, who has also struggled with motivation since that Masters high, added: 'I'm going to have to do a lot of practice and a lot of work over the weekend at home and try to at least have a better idea of where my game is going into next week. 'I went back to a 44-inch driver this week to try to get something that was a little more in control and could try to get something a bit more in play. But if I'm going to miss fairways, I'd rather have the ball speed and miss the fairway than not. 'I'd say I'll be testing quite a few drivers over the weekend.'

Who is Demir Ege Tiknaz? Celtic transfer 'target' manifesting one dream as another fades

The young Turkish midfielder is attracting interest from clubs across Europe Celtic have reportedly registered an interest in promising Turkish midfielder Demir Ege Tiknaz. The 20-year-old, who is currently on loan at Rio Ave from Besiktas, has caught the eye in his breakout season in Portugal. ‌ And the youngster's impressive showings have drawn attention from big clubs in Germany, France and Italy. ‌ However, the Parkhead side would have to navigate some obstacles in order to land the highly-rated playmaker. Here, Record Sport tells you everything you need to know about the up-and-coming talent. Who is Demir Tiknaz? Born on August 17, 2004, Tiknaz came through the ranks at Turkish giants Besiktas and made his senior debut as a sub in a 3-1 Europa Conference League win against KF Tirana in 2023. Capped at every youth level for his country, Tiknaz racked up 29 appearances for Besiktas before heading out on loan to Rio Ave in search for regular minutes. He helped the Vila do Conde-based club finish 11th in the Primeira Liga, starting in 28 of his 33 appearances. A defensive midfielder, Tiknaz chipped in with four goals and two assists across the campaign. ‌ How much would he cost? This is where it gets slightly complicated for Celtic. Uncapped Tiknaz - who earned his first senior international call-up in March 2025 - is still under contract with parent club, Besiktas. However, Rio Ave hold a £4.25million option-to-buy clause, which they are expected to trigger before the upcoming deadline on Tuesday, June 10. ‌ It's widely believed that Rio Ave's strategy is to sign the rising star permanently before immediately selling him on as clubs across Europe circle. The Portuguese side would double their money by demanding a fee of around £8.5m for the towering midfielder, who stands at 6ft 4in. ‌ That sum is well within Celtic's range, and should the Double-winners get a deal over the line, Tiknaz would become the club's fourth most expensive signing in history behind Arne Engels, Adam Idah and Odsonne Edouard. What has Tiknaz said? Istanbul-born Tiknaz has already overcome a major setback in his career after suffering a cruciate ligament tear in April 2022. That kept him out of action for around nine months before he eventually bounced back and made his Besiktas debut. Speaking to The Athletic, he said: 'On the pitch, you forget everything from your own life. ‌ "During these 90 minutes, it's kind of a therapy. When you touch the ball you forget everything, but after, you remember. Without football, life would really be way more difficult for us. 'When I didn't play football, I watched so many matches and had so many new ideas. When I was back on the pitch, I started playing with more maturity and I felt stronger. 'I felt stronger in the duels. I felt fitter and fresher. After returning from that injury, I thought if I can get through this one, I can get through any other problem.' ‌ Now one of the most highly-sought-after young players in Europe, Tiknaz revealed he models his game on Barcelona icon Sergio Busquets. He said: 'A box-to-box midfielder, that was my aim. Now I can say I'm a little bit like Busquets' style, though I'm taller than him — I am 1.93m. But I'm kind of a playmaker; regista. ‌ 'At the same time, I can play No 8, box-to-box, too. I feel good in these positions. I always want to have possession. I'm that kind of a guy.' As for his future? Tiknaz dreams big. His ultimate ambition was to share a pitch with Lionel Messi. But as that goal fades, he's set his sights on playing at the highest level possible. He added: 'I also had a dream to play with Messi, but it seems quite difficult because he's about to quit in a few years. I have another dream though — that is to play in England, especially in Liverpool if I can.'
