Here's a look at the list of major records broken during the 5th India-England Test, which was played at The Oval in London from July 31 to August 4.
The fifth and final Test of the five-match series between India and England concluded on Monday (August 4) with India's win by six runs. Ollie Pope's men failed to chased down the target of 374 runs at The Oval. Mohammed Siraj dismissed five English batters for 104 runs in 30.1 overs and Prasidh Krishna picked up four wickets for 126 runs in 27 overs. With India's win in the fifth Test, the 2025 edition of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended in a 2-2 draw.
During the fifth and final India-England Test, players from both teams break multiple batting, bowling, and fielding records.
The win by six runs at The Oval is India's narrowest win by runs in Test cricket. India's previous smallest win by runs in Tests was by 13 runs against the Australian team in November 2004 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Joe Root became the first player in the world to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship.
Root also became the first player in the world to score 500+ runs in a Test series against India three times. During their playing days, Everton Weekes, Garry Sobers, Zaheer Abbas, Ricky Ponting, and Younis Khan twice scored 500+ runs in a Test series against India.
Root became the first player in the world to score 24 centuries in home Tests. Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Mahela Jayawardene are in second place with 23 centuries in home Tests.
Root became only the second batter after Don Bradman to score 2000+ runs in home Tests against one team. Bradman finished his career with 2354 runs in 18 Tests against England in Australia, whereas Root has 2111 runs to his credit in 20 Tests against India in England.
Root became the first English batter to score 13 Test centuries against one team. During his playing days, Jack Hobbs scored 12 Test centuries for England against Australia. Only Don Bradman has scored more Test centuries (19 vs England) against one team than Root now.
Root has 7329 runs to his name in 84 Tests played so far in England, which is more than Sachin Tendulkar's tally of 7126 Test runs in India. Only Ponting (7578 runs in 92 matches) has scored more runs in home Tests than Root now.
Shubman Gill broke Graham Gooch's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England. Gill scored 21 and 11 runs in two innings of the Oval Test, which helped him take his tally of runs to 754. Gooch played three Tests against India in 1990 and scored 752 runs.
During his 21-run knock in the first innings, Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain. Gavaskar played six Tests against the West Indies in 1978-79 as captain and scored 732 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja scored 53 runs from 77 balls in the second innings of the Oval Test. Jadeja finished the series with six 50+ scores in five matches. He is the first player to score six 50+ scores in a Test series played between India and England.
India scored 224 runs in the first innings of the fifth Test and 396 in the second. A total of 620 runs at The Oval helped the Indian team take their tally of runs to 3809 in the series, which is a record for the most runs by any team in a five-match Test series. Only Australia has scored more (3877 in six matches of the 1993 Ashes series).
During his 53-run knock in the second innings, Jadeja took his tally of runs past the 500-mark in the ongoing series. For the first time in history, three Indian batters have scored more than 500 runs in a Test series.
Siraj dismissed four English batters in the first innings and five in the second. He is the first Asian bowler to dismiss at least four batters seven times in Test matches played in England.
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett added 92 runs for the first wicket in 1st innings and 50 runs for the first innings in 2nd innings. They have added 50+ runs for the first wicket against India nine times in Tests now, which is one more than Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge's tally of 8.
Crawley and Duckett also became second opening pair in the world after Haynes and Greenidge to add more than 1000 runs as openers in Tests against India.
Akash Deep scored 66 runs for India in the second innings after coming out to bat at No. 4 as nightwatchman. He is the third Indian after Syed Kirmani (101* vs Australia in 1979) and Amit Mishra (50 vs Bangladesh in 2010, 84 vs England in 2011) to score fifty as nightwatchman.

'Not Young But Gun Team': Gautam Gambhir's Message Revealed After Win In 5th Test Against England

Indian cricket team skipper Shubman Gill revealed the fiery message from head coach Gautam Gambhir that motivated them during the Test series against England. It was a stunning show from the visitors as Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were the top performers as India registered a six-run win to level the five-match Test series 2-2. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announcing their Test retirements and Jasprit Bumrah missing the Test due to workload management, it was a young team under a new captain that achieved a massive feat in England. Gill said that Gambhir wanted them to not think of themselves as a 'young team' but a 'gun team' that is capable of pulling off these kind of significant results. "We had the option of taking the new ball, but the way they were bowling, we thought they could do the job. We had wicket-taking options. We wanted them to score 30 singles; we knew they were under pressure. We wanted to take the game deep. The way Brook and Root were going, not many teams in the world would have been given a chance," Gill told reporters after victory. "Thinking about other players put less pressure on me because I was focused on everyone, not just myself. That helped. Gautam Gambhir told us not to think of ourselves as a young team, but as a gun team," he added. Following his side's series draw against England, Indian skipper Shubman Gill hailed pacer Mohammed Siraj, the leading wicket-taker of the series, calling him a "captain's dream." Siraj's inspirational spell during the fifth and final Test was perhaps the biggest reason why Team India left the England shores with their heads held high and the series scoreline. He took a total of 23 wickets in the series at an average of 32.43, with best figures of 6/70. In the final Test, he took a total of nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings. While defending 374, India was in trouble with England at 301/3 at one point, but along with Prasidh Krishna, Siraj bowled relentlessly, pulling back the match ball-by-ball, wicket-by-wicket. Speaking during the post-match presentation, Gill said, "He (Siraj) is a captain's dream. Coming in five Test matches, every ball, every spell that he bowled gave his all, and every captain, every team wants a player like him. We are very fortunate to have him in that team."

'We will never surrender': Gautam Gambhir's defiant roar as India leave Bazball empire in ruins with Oval heist

Gautam Gambhir has been a man under pressure since the start of his tenure as India head coach in July last year. The Champions Trophy win did little to ease the scrutiny, with critics sharpening their knives over his red-ball methodology — especially after the unprecedented home whitewash against New Zealand last November and the subsequent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series loss to Australia. India drew the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2 against England. But the former India opener heaved a sigh of relief on Monday as the Shubman Gill-led side pulled off an epic heist at The Oval, levelling the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. Mohammed Siraj picked up a five-wicket haul, while Prasidh Krishna claimed four as India silenced a rampant England. After centuries from Harry Brook and Joe Root took the hosts to within 73 runs of a record win with seven wickets in hand, the Indian pacers triggered a stunning collapse — grabbing the final seven wickets for just 66 runs to leave Bazball in ruins. Following the win, Gambhir took to social media to let out a defiant roar. He tweeted: "We'll win some, we'll lose some…. but we'll NEVER surrender! Well done boys!" Under Gambhir's reign, India managed just one Test series win — against Bangladesh at home in September — before losing six of their next eight matches in the format, including a forgettable 0-3 whitewash by New Zealand. Although India bounced back with a win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth last November, they went on to lose three of the remaining four Tests in the series. Gambhir's red-ball woes deepened with a five-wicket loss in Leeds in June. But the Gill-led side turned the tide with a historic 336-run triumph at Edgbaston. At Lord's, India fought hard, but narrowly fell short in a 22-run defeat. In Manchester, they refused to give in, forcing England to settle for a draw and keeping the series alive. The final chapter at The Oval initially echoed a familiar downfall, but India staged a defiant comeback to seal a famous 2-2 draw. Former India coach Sanjay Bangar underlined the significance of the result, particularly for Gambhir, given his tumultuous run. Speaking to JioHotstar, he said: "This is one of the special moments in the history of Indian cricket. This was a very important win for Gautam Gambhir as well."

Bumrah fit, available for Asia Cup

MUMBAI: Apart from India's dramatic win over England in the fifth Test to level the series 2-2, Indian fans would be relieved that pace ace Jasprit Bumrah is fit and fine. Bumrah sat out the Oval Test to manage his workload and not due to any injury, it is learnt. He is available for the Asia Cup T20 tournament next month. Jasprit Bumrah. (PTI) 'As announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar at the time of the team selection, the decision on the number of Tests Bumrah will be able to play was taken in advance by the medical and fitness team. If he was injured, he would be going to BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for recovery and rehab,' an official with knowledge of the issue told HT when contacted. After Bumrah played the first and third Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, the team management had the choice of playing him in the fourth or the final Test. With India trailing 2-1, coach Gautam Gambhir and support staff decided to field the fast bowler in the Manchester game. Bumrah bowled a total of 119.4 overs in the three Tests. With just three days between the last two Tests, it was decided to rest the bowler who played in all five Tests on the 2024-25 tour of Australia, breaking down in the final game in Sydney. Bumrah took 14 wickets in the England series with five-wicket hauls at Leeds and Lord's. The Gujarat player has been sensational for India across formats and lethal in Tests with 219 wickets in just 48 matches at an average of 19.82 and a strike rate of 42.6, but has battled fitness issues, including back injury that needed surgery. Careful about their strike bowler's workload, the team managements have been selective, getting him to play mainly in marquee ICC events and important bilateral fixtures. The Asia Cup begins on September 9.
