Satellite coated in ultra-dark 'Vantablack' paint will launch into space next year to help combat major issue

A satellite painted with one of the darkest materials ever created by humans, known as "Vantablack," will launch into space next year to help researchers try and solve a major issue that's plaguing astronomers across the globe.
There are more than 14,900 satellites orbiting Earth. But experts predict that, within the next 50 years or so, the number of active spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO) could rise to more than 100,000. This sharp rise is thanks to private satellite "megaconstellations," such as SpaceX's Starlink network, which already accounts for more than 60% of the total number of spacecraft circling our planet. These machines are causing several problems that scientists are only just starting to properly understand, including uncontrolled reentries, radio signal interference — and light pollution.
For several years, astronomers have been warning that sunlight reflecting off shiny metal satellite swarms will brighten the night sky, making it harder to study the cosmos. This issue is already impacting most optical observatories, which are getting repeatedly photobombed by satellites flying overhead. And the situation is expected to get worse due to newer spacecraft, such as China's "Thousand Sails" satellites, that far exceed the brightness limits suggested by astronomical authorities.
One potential solution to this problem is to make satellites that do not reflect light. Therefore, researchers in the U.K. will soon launch a "shoebox-size" cubesat, named Jovian-1, which will have one side covered in a special "hull-darkening" material that absorbs 99.965% of light that hits it. By closely tracking the dark-coated spacecraft as it orbits our planet, the team will be able to tell if the material works as predicted — and whether it can withstand the rigors of space travel.
The mini-satellite is scheduled to launch at some point in 2026. The project is being managed by the Joint Universities Programme for In-Orbit Training, Education and Research (JUPITER), a collaboration between the Universities of Surrey, Portsmouth and Southampton in the U.K..

The hull-darkening material is a version of Vantablack, a substrate covered with vertical carbon nanotubes that absorb almost all the light waves that hit it from nearly every angle. It is often described as the blackest material on Earth, although this has been disputed by competitors in recent years.
The new version, named Vantablack 310, is modified to withstand the harsh conditions of space, such as extreme fluctuations in temperature and bombardment by cosmic radiation. It was created by Surrey NanoSystems — a spinoff company from the University of Surrey that first created Vantablack in 2014.
"Our latest coating technology, Vantablack 310, offers super-black performance across a wide range of viewing angles, while remaining robust to the challenging LEO environment," Kieran Clifford, a senior technologist and project lead at Surrey NanoSystems, said in a statement, adding that the goal was to ensure""sustainable and equitable access to a night sky for all."
While hull-darkening could provide a potential solution to the light pollution issue, there are still several other megaconstellation issues that need to be solved.
For example, even if a satellite does not give off light pollution, it would still emit radio pollution. Astronomers recently warned that this could lead to an "inflection point," beyond which ground-based radio astronomy would become effectively impossible.

The rising number of satellites also increases the chances of spacecraft colliding with one another, further contributing to the amount of space junk that is littered across LEO, which can in turn increase the chances of even more collisions.
Additionally, private satellites have a short lifespan and most eventually fall back to Earth and burn up in our planet's atmosphere, releasing metal pollution into our skies that we are still trying to fully understand.

World now in ‘crunch time' to avoid higher levels of warming, UN scientists warn
UN scientists have warned that the world is in 'crunch time' to avoid higher levels of warming beyond the key threshold of 1.5C but that drivers of climate change are 'all moving in the wrong direction'. In their annual report, a team of more than 60 international scientists have put together a comprehensive picture of the current state of the climate and calculated the human-driven factors behind the changes the world is experiencing. It comes as part of efforts to provide regular updates between landmark UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, the last of which was published in 2021 and the next of which is expected in 2028. The group examined the amount of planet-heating carbon dioxide (CO2) the world can release into the atmosphere in the coming years while limiting warming to the UN target of 1.5C. The report estimates that the remaining 'carbon budget' for 1.5C is emitting 130 billion tonnes of C02 from the beginning of 2025, if the world is to have a 50% chance to stay within the threshold. However, this budget will be exhausted in little more than three years at current levels of CO2 emissions, according to the findings published on Wednesday night in the journal Earth System Science Data. This means that without drastic cuts to emissions, the world will be unable to prevent warming from surpassing the dangerous threshold, which will lead to a rise in extreme weather events, climate-related disasters and increase the risk of triggering irreversible changes. The report also warned the carbon budget for 1.6C or 1.7C could also be exceeded within nine years, which will significantly intensify these impacts. The scientists' long-term estimates show current average global temperatures to be 1.24C higher than in pre-industrial times. Professor Joeri Rogelj, research director at the Grantham Institute, said: 'Under any course of action, there is a very high chance that we will reach and even exceed 1.5C and even higher levels of warming. '1.5C is an iconic level but we are currently already in crunch time… to avoid higher levels of warming with a decent likelihood or a prudent likelihood as well and that is true for 1.7C, but equally so for 1.8C if we want to have a high probability there.' But Prof Rogelj added that reductions in emissions over the next decade can still 'critically change' the rate of warming and limit the magnitude and the extent by which the world exceeds 1.5C. 'It's really the difference between just cruising through 1.5C towards much higher levels of 2C or trying to limit warming somewhere in the range of 1.5,' he said. Piers Forster, professor of Climate Physics at the University of Leeds, who has helped author IPCC reports, said the report highlights how climate policies and pace of climate action 'are not keeping up with what's needed to address the ever-growing impacts'. 'I certainly tend to be an optimistic person but if you do look at this year's annual update, things are all moving in the wrong direction,' he said. 'They're not only moving in the wrong direction, we're seeing some unprecedented changes.' Reflecting on the IPCC reports, he said: 'What we had hope to see by this time is these emissions beginning to turn a corner and unfortunately that hasn't occurred.' Instead emissions have increased year on year since the 2021 report, remaining at all-time highs, he said. This year's update covers key climate system indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions and concentrations, Earth energy imbalance, human-induced climate change, remaining carbon budgets and maximum land surface temperatures. But for the first time, the annual update also included sea-level rise and global land precipitation. In 2024, the best estimate of observed global surface temperature rise was 1.52C, of which 1.36C can be attributed to human activity, caused by global greenhouse gas emissions, the scientists said. The report said last year's high temperatures are 'alarmingly unexceptional' as the combination of human-driven climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon push global heat to record levels. While global average temperatures exceeded 1.5C for the first time, this does not mean the world has breached landmark UN agreement, which would require average global temperatures to exceed the threshold over multiple decades. When analysing longer-term temperature change, the scientists' best estimates show that between 2015 and 2024 average global temperatures were 1.24C higher than in pre-industrial times, with 1.22C caused by human activities. Elsewhere, the report found that human activities were found to be affecting the Earth's energy balance, with the oceans storing about 91% of the excess heat, driving detrimental changes in every component of the climate system, including sea level rise, ocean warming, ice loss, and permafrost thawing. Between 2019 and 2024, global mean sea level also increased by around 26mm, more than doubling the long-term rate of 1.8mm per year seen since the turn of the twentieth century. Dr Aimee Slangen, research leader at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, said the rise is already having an 'outsized impact' on low-lying coastal areas, causing more damaging storm surges and coastal erosion. 'The concerning part is that we know that sea-level rise in response to climate change is relatively slow, which means that we have already locked in further increases in the coming years and decades,' she said. IPCC's last assessment of the climate system, published in 2021, highlighted how climate change was leading to widespread adverse impacts on nature and people. Professor Rogelj said: 'Every small increase in warming matters, leading to more frequent, more intense weather extremes. 'Emissions over the next decade will determine how soon and how fast 1.5C of warming is reached. They need to be swiftly reduced to meet the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.'

Researchers are developing AI models that can interpret images for various purposes, including medicine. The latest study showing such advancements comes from China. Researchers from several universities have been able to determine a person's age with high accuracy by having AI inspect an image of their retina. The readings also showed differences between the person's age and the eye's age. The researchers found that the retinal age gap the AI provided can be especially helpful for women. A simple retinal scan might help doctors offer better support to couples trying to conceive and to women at risk of early menopause. Retinal fundus imaging, or a photo of the back of the eye, lets doctors see microvascular features that reflect systemic aging. An AI trained on thousands of images can then predict the eye's age and compare it to the person's actual age to 'predict retinal age from fundus images with high precision.' The scientists used an AI called Frozen and Learning Ensemble Crossover (FLEX) to predict retinal age from fundus images. They fed FLEX over 20,000 eye photos from more than 10,000 adults of all ages to teach it how the back of the eye looks as people age. FLEX also analyzed over 2,500 images from nearly 1,300 pre-menopausal women. The AI was then able to estimate a person's age by examining a retinal fundus photo. If the eye appears older than the woman's actual age, the retinal age gap is positive. That could also mean other organs in the body are aging faster. The implications for reproductive health are clear. Fertility and menopause issues could benefit directly from such an AI screening tool. The researchers linked a larger retinal age gap to lower blood levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a marker for ovarian reserve. The lower the AMH value, the harder it is for older women to conceive. The scientists studied women ages 40 to 50 and found that each additional retinal year raised the risk of a low AMH result. The risk increased by 12% in the 40-44 age group and by 20% in the 45-50 group for every extra retinal year. The study also found that having more childbirths at younger ages was associated with lower AMH levels than average. Each additional retinal year increased the risk of developing menopause before age 45 by 36%, according to the paper. We're still in the early days of using AI for medical imaging, but the study shows promise for using a simple, non-invasive technique to improve reproductive health protocols. Imagine getting a retinal scan in your late 20s or early 30s to help decide whether to get pregnant or freeze your eggs. Similarly, women over 40 concerned about pre-menopause or menopause could use an eye scan to check their retinal age and assess the risk of early symptoms. This might help them prepare for the years ahead with hormonal therapies to delay or ease symptoms. For any of this to happen, the conclusions from Hanpei Miao & Co. would need to be confirmed by further research. Separately, the FLEX AI model used in this study could be explored for other health conditions where eye scans might serve as early indicators of age-related health risks. SpaceX faces a surprising rival Tesla is already battling

His most valuable asset is Tesla, the trillion-dollar electric vehicle maker/AI/driver assistance software company. He owns 13% of the company and is its CEO. According to a report, the company and investors purchased $1.25 billion shares at $185 a share. But legendary hedge fund manager Cathie Wood expects the company to be worth $2.5 trillion by 2030. Instead of losing rockets to the ocean once they're disengaged, like previous generations did, reusable rockets deliver their payloads into low Earth orbit before safely returning to Earth for later reuse. SpaceX - founded in 2002 and launching its first rocket, Falcon 1, in 2006 - has helped revolutionize space. But now Honda Motor Co. (HMC) is bringing some new competition to the market. On June 17, Honda R&D Co., the research arm of Honda, conducted a successful launch and landing test of its reusable rocket. The 20-foot-long capsule landed safely back within about 14 inches of its target touchdown point after rockets pushed the almost 3,000-pound payload nearly 889 feet off the ground for 56 seconds of flight. It was Honda's first launch and landing test, and according to the video, it was a smashing success. "We are pleased that Honda has made another step forward in our research on reusable rockets with this successful completion of a launch and landing test," said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe. "We believe that rocket research is a meaningful endeavor that leverages Honda's technological strengths." While SpaceX has its dedicated launch base, Starbase, in South Texas (as well as launch sites and Kennedy Space Center and other places), Honda launched its test flight from Taiki Town, in southeastern Hokkaido, Japan. Taiki Town has been developing into a "space town" to host these types of launches. Honda has also conducted engine combustion and hovering tests in Taiki Town since 2024. The company first announced its space ambitions in 2021, with a stated goal to help people "transcend the constraints of time, place, or ability and make people's daily lives more enjoyable." While SpaceX uses its rockets to build out Starlink and takes government contracting jobs, it is unclear how Honda plans to commercialize this technology. The company does say that it expects to be able to achieve a suborbital launch with its rockets by 2029.
