Padma awardees praise PM Modi-led government's growth initiatives in 11 years
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government completes eleven years in power and marks the first anniversary of Modi 3.0, it has been dubbed as 'glorious and golden era' of governance by many eminent citizens.
Many Padma Shri awardees, in conversation with IANS, shared their experience of the past decade, elucidating why the bold initiatives undertaken in Modi 1.0, Modi 2.0 and Modi 3.0 augur well for the country's future.
Bihar's noted nephrologist Hemant Kumar, honoured with the Padma Shri for more than three decades of contribution in medical sciences, said that the country has seen remarkable progress in the field of health and education.
"Infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate have decreased significantly. A lot of attention has been given to girl child. The level of education has increased a lot. Earlier, girls used to sit at home but now have started going to school and the level of education among girls has increased a lot. They are being encouraged by giving them incentives in every way," he said.
Padma Shri Phoolbasan Bai Yadav, a social worker from Chhattisgarh and President of 'Maa Bamleshwari Self Help Group', said that in these 11 years, the country has made unprecedented progress in areas like women empowerment, cleanliness, self-reliant India and Digital India.
"PM Modi has played an important role in promoting women's self-respect. Through women self-help groups, lakhs of women got employment and became self-reliant. We are not educated. But, PM Modi trusted us and today our sisters and mothers have become Lakhpati Didi," she added.
She also said that the sisters and daughters are marching ahead with Lakhpati Didi scheme.
Geographical Indication (GI) expert and Padma Shri Rajnikant described PM Modi's 11-year tenure as unmatched and wonderful.
"In these 11 years, there has been an unprecedented change in the field of crafts, art, agriculture and GI, the credit for which goes to the visionary thinking of PM Modi," he remarked.
Referring to his journey, Rajnikanth said, "It started from Kashi after the GI law was enacted in 2006-07. PM Modi gave the slogan of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Local to Global', which gave new strength to GI. As a result, Kashi has become hub of GI products today. At present, there are 32 GI products in Kashi region, which is the highest in the world in any one region."
Oncologist and Padma Shri Vijayalakshmi Deshmane said that PM Modi's 11-year tenure has given a new direction to the country.
Talking about the Padma awards, he said that earlier people used to think that this honour is given only to people from the royal family or to special people.
"Narendra Modi government brought a change in this. When I got the news of the award, I wanted to thank some Union Ministers. And, the reply I got was that don't thank us, it is PM Modi's vision. He chose unsung heroes, which is wonderful. The selection of awards is now transparent and different. Now government and system are recognising those who do great work while remaining anonymous."
Padma Shri Kanubhai Hasmukhbhai Taylor equated the Prime Minister with God.
He said that PM Modi's support took his work for 'Divyang' (differently-abled) children and society to new heights.
Kanubhai runs a school for differently-abled children in Surat.
He praised the PM Modi-led government for welfare of the differently-abled persons.
"My association with him is very old. From the time when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Narendra Modi is God for me. When he became the Chief Minister, he worked to bring Divyang children and society into the mainstream. With the support of PM Modi, a school for Divyang children was established in Surat," he recalled.
Padma Shri and plastic surgeon, Yogi Aeron, shared his experiences and while congratulating the government on completion of 11 years in power.
Talking to IANS, he said, "Earlier, honours like Padma Shri were given only to VVIPs, but now people working at the rural level, who made the impossible possible with their hard work and ability, are being given this honour. I never thought that I would get Padma Shri."
Praising the Ayushman Bharat scheme, he said, "My family lives in America, but there is no such scheme even there. With Ayushman, even poorest of the poor feel safe. Earlier, poor were not able to reach the big doctors, but now they are able to get better treatment."
Padma Shri and para-athlete K.Y. Venkatesh described PM Modi-led government's 11-year tenure as excellent.
He praised PM Modi's leadership style and contribution to sports.
Venkatesh said, "PM Modi is doing a great job in the economy, industry and sports in his third term. Earlier, our medals did not reach double digits in the Asian Games or Paralympics. Now, we have crossed the three-digit mark in the Asian Games and are also touching double digits in the Olympics."
He also praised the efforts of the PM Modi-led government for para-athletes.
He said that Atal Bihari Vajpayee Khel Kendra has been built in Madhya Pradesh, which is working under the Sports Authority of India.
This is a big gift for the para-athletes, he added.
Padma Shri Mahesh Sharma said that this is the time to build a 'New India'.
He added that PM Modi-led government has not only made welfare schemes but also implemented them to bring about a change in the lives of people at the grassroots level.
Praising PM Modi's leadership, he said, "The way Prime Minister has united the nation like a family is being appreciated everywhere. He does not just preach but sets an example by implementing them himself."
"Prime Minister Modi recently sought suggestions to make Mangarh Dham a national monument. This area is considered the land of tribal sacrifice. This step shows that the tribal society is also being given a national identity now. Our cultural pride is being revived," he added.
Padma Shri and Bhajan singer Kaluram Bamaniya from Madhya Pradesh's Dewas said that Prime Minister has done a commendable job in promoting the culture of the country and boosting the morale of singers and artists.
"Under the leadership of PM Modi, the country has made remarkable progress in many areas like agriculture, education and health. He has made significant contributions to the Kabir sect. The construction of the Kabir Math in Gayaji, which cost crores of rupees, is an example of this," he added.
Padma Shri as well as Padma Bhushan Tejas Patel praised Prime Minister profusely, saying, "When Modi ji was not the Chief Minister of Gujarat, I had met him in connection with a patient. While working in the hospital at that time, I saw his talent and impressive personality. I was impressed by his brilliance and confidence. Even after becoming the Chief Minister, I kept meeting him in various functions."
He described PM Modi's memory as amazing.
"He remembers people by name even after years. Even if there are five hundred or thousand people, he still remembers old things and references. His memory is like a computer's hard disk," he said.
"His habit of going deep into every subject impressed me. Be it a matter of medical field or any other, he does not depend on others. He himself tries to understand everything in detail and understands it," he added.

India saw rapid changes across sectors in 11 years: PM Narendra Modi
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government marked the completion of 11 years in office on Monday by unveiling a 176-page 'comprehensive compendium' on India's transformation under the PM's 'visionary leadership' across 14 facets of policymaking — ranging from national security and foreign policy to infrastructure growth, healthcare, women's empowerment, and social justice. 'PM Modi has brought the politics of development — Vikasvaad — into the mainstream, making it a focal point around which political discourse and policy action now revolve,' detailed the booklet, released on Monday morning by the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB). The Modi-led 72-member Union Council of Ministers had taken the oath of office on June 9, 2024. In the afternoon, addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) national headquarters here, the party's National President J P Nadda, who is also a Union minister, said that proactive governance has been the hallmark of Modi's tenure as the country's PM. He said Modi has confronted challenges head-on and taken 'bold decisions' once thought impossible, such as the 'abrogation of Article 370', the 2016 surgical strike, the Balakot air strike, and Operation Sindoor of 2025. Nadda listed the banning of triple talaq, the Citizenship Amendment Act, demonetisation, one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha (LS) and legislative Assemblies, ending the distinction between plan and non-plan expenditure, advancing the Union Budget presentation from the 'colonial-era' February 28 to February 1, and merging the railway Budget with the Union Budget as other key decisions over the past 11 years. Nadda said demonetisation — where people queued up to withdraw money without complaining despite the Opposition's intense efforts to provoke them — was evidence of the credibility of the PM's leadership. Referring to the BJP falling short of the majority mark by 32 seats in the 2024 LS polls and, for the first time since 2014, having to rely on allies to secure a majority — with Opposition leaders raising questions about the government's longevity — Nadda expressed confidence that the NDA government will complete its tenure and asserted it will last the next full term as well. 'Our government is strong. It will last for five years in this term and the next too,' he said. The booklet said, 'The success of Operation Sindoor demonstrated a new India: resolute, swift, and sovereign in action.' It added that a dynamic foreign and national security policy is essential to respond to today's global opportunities and challenges. 'The Modi government has consistently delivered on this front, ensuring a stable, strong, and safe nation,' it said. The booklet highlighted vibrant India-US relations as a foreign policy success, terming it 'Modi's adaptive strategy with the US'. It said India has emerged as an economic powerhouse, with the government creating a base for 'growthade' through infrastructure expansion, such as the development of national highways. The government also said it has championed cooperative federalism by incentivising states to undertake reforms voluntarily. It mentioned the all-time high goods and services tax collections in April 2025. It also detailed measures for the welfare of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and women through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana, adding that 810 million people continue to receive food security. 'There is highest ever representation for the SCs, STs, and OBCs in the Union Council of Ministers,' it said. The government claimed that welfare measures, such as Mission Poshan, have helped improve the sex ratio at birth, which, for the first time, stands at 1,020 women per 1,000 men. At his press conference, Nadda said the Indian economy continues to grow despite global challenges and that international bodies like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have called it a bright spot. He said over 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty — a figure acknowledged globally. Nadda dismissed Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh's jibe at Modi for not addressing a press conference on the government's anniversary. The Union minister questioned what was wrong with the president of the main ruling party speaking to the media. He also criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's remarks about the Election Commission of India and the fairness of the Maharashtra Assembly polls, likening him to a sore loser in a cricket match who blames the umpire for a loss while claiming credit in case of a win. The Congress on Monday released two booklets that flagged stagnating growth, rising hunger, and 'unfulfilled promises' over the 11 years of the Modi government. At a press conference in the national capital, Congress Research Department Head M V Rajeev Gowda released Ek Aur Baar Jumla Sarkar and 11 Saal Jhoothe Vikaas Ke Vaade. He said the first booklet examines promises made by the BJP in its 2024 manifesto, while the second is a 'detailed exposé' of the BJP's 'hollow promises'. 'In the 11-Saal document, one of the first themes they (BJP) highlight is taking care of the poor and the marginalised. They are very happy that 810 million people are getting free foodgrain under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. But the basic problem of hunger is a much larger crisis in India, and it puts us at 105 out of 127 countries in the World Hunger Index. Its implications: malnutrition is affecting our children in a horrible way, crippling their growth. Stunting is at 35.5 per cent; wasting is at 19.3 per cent; underweight is at 32.1 per cent,' Gowda said. He also alleged that the Centre's claim in the PIB booklet that India added over 5,000 defence items to the indigenisation list was untrue. 'Sadly, 40 per cent of the items listed for indigenisation have not been indigenised as of now. India remains one of the top importers of defence rather than a producer and exporter. If you look at 'mission mode DRDO projects,' 23 out of 55 have been delayed, and the share of research and development in our defence budget is only 5.45 per cent,' he said. He further challenged the claim that India is the fastest-growing large economy. 'So, what is happening in this 11th year of your Sarkar, PM Modi? What is happening is reflected in the response of the private sector. Is the Indian private sector investing in India? If you look at the investment figures, after you have given the bonanza tax cut, nothing has changed. They still don't have confidence in the management of your economy to invest,' Gowda said. He added that fixed capital formation has declined to 32.4 per cent — an 11-year low. 'There is another legacy: the glaring inequality. The share of wealth held by India's top 1 per cent is 40 per cent. The bottom 50 per cent have to make do with just over 3 per cent,' the former Congress Member of Parliament said, adding that this is not the economy the country wants.

Zero Marks: Siddaramaiahs Rating For Modi Government
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday stated that he would give "zero marks" to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Interacting with media at his residence in Mysuru, the Chief Minister, answering a question on the completion of 11 years in office by Prime Minister Modi, asserted that Prime Minister Modi survives on publicity. He questioned who benefited from demonetisation, and reminded reporters of the Prime Minister's promises of "Achhe Din" (good days are coming), providing two crore jobs every year, and resolving farmers' issues. He then asked why farmers agitated for a year if their problems were solved. The Chief Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Modi has not delivered on his major promises and "has merely completed eleven years in power". Siddaramaiah criticised the media for giving the Prime Minister excessive publicity, which he claimed helps spread false narratives. He pointed out that when the Karnataka government announced its guarantee schemes, critics claimed they couldn't be implemented and that the state would go bankrupt. Yet, these same schemes were later duplicated and implemented in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. He also questioned PM Modi's actions, contrasting them with his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, where he advocated for a 50 per cent tax share. Siddaramaiah stated that while Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced Rs 5,300 crore for the state, it was never provided. CM Siddaramaiah further added that despite the 15th Finance Commission recommending Rs 11,495 crore in funds to Karnataka, it was also withheld. He accused the BJP of spreading misinformation instead of questioning the injustice being done to Karnataka.
