Assam Government Evicts 146 Families From 132 Acres Of Forest Land In Golaghat

The Assam government on Friday evicted 146 families who had allegedly encroached on 132 acres (400 bighas) of forest land in Golaghat district, officials said. The eviction drive was carried out at Negheribil in Merapani, located along the Assam-Nagaland border, as part of the ongoing drive to reclaim encroached land in the Doyang Reserve Forest, Special Chief Secretary MK Yadav said. The drive led to the clearance of 146 households comprising numerous illegal structures, spread across more than 50 hectares of protected forest land, he said. It was conducted by following due legal process with prior notices issued to the encroachers. Yadav said the Nagaland government and police had extended active support and cooperation throughout the eviction process, which contributed significantly to the smooth conduct of the drive. The remaining encroachments in Uriamghat and Negheribil will be removed from August 16, he said. The Gauhati High Court has directed those facing eviction from Doyang and South Nambar forests in Golaghat district to submit proof of land rights by August 14 or vacate the land. A plantation drive will be launched in Uriamghat from Saturday with similar initiatives to follow in other recently cleared areas within the reserve forest, Yadav said. This was the ninth eviction drive carried out in the state since June. The largest of these had cleared 1,500 hectares of forest land and displaced around 1,500 families at Uriamghat in Golaghat district last week. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had claimed over 160 sq km of land has been cleared of encroachments since his government took over in May 2021, affecting more than 50,000 people. The CM had also said all unauthorised occupation of forest land, VGR (Village Grazing Reserve), PGR (Professional Grazing Reserve), Satras, Namghars, and other public areas would be cleared in a phased manner. Most of the people displaced due to the eviction drives are from the Bengali-speaking Muslims community who claim that their ancestors had moved and settled in the areas where drives were carried out after their land in the 'Char' or riverine areas were washed away due to erosion by the River Brahmaputra. Ahead of the Bihar election, Tejashwi Yadav pens a message to sisters of Bihar on the day of Rakshabandhan

On the day of Rakshabandhan, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday (August 9, 2025) penned a message to the sisters of Bihar with regard to the benevolent work he has decided if voted to power in the upcoming assembly election. Mr. Yadav wished all the sisters of Bihar would pray to God that this Rakshabandhan gives them happiness, prosperity, peace and progress. 'I want to make a request to you. I request that after tying rakhi to your brothers, you tie one more rakhi in the name of your brother Tejashwi. Yes, your Tejashwi bhaiya cannot come to every house in Bihar, but he is thinking about every house, about the prosperity of every sister and is making policies for them,' Mr. Yadav said in the letter addressed to the sisters of Bihar on social media account X. The Leader of Opposition urged the sisters of Bihar to extend their cooperation and take a pledge to make Bihar number one. 'Give a Rakhi on Rakshabandhan and a vote in the elections to your Tejashwi brother, I assure you that whether it is protection from unemployment, inflation, crime, poverty, corruption, I will always work for you as your protective circle, this is Tejashwi's pledge to every sister of Bihar,'Mr. Yadav said. Mr. Yadav himself has seven sisters – eldest one is Misa Bharti followed by Rohini Acharya, Chanda Singh, Ragini Yadav, Hema Yadav, Anushka Yadav and Raj Lakshmi as the youngest one. Mr. Yadav is in the national capital to celebrate the festival along with the sisters. He pointed out that everything has been planned and blueprint is also ready for the sisters of Bihar. He listed out schemes decided by the INDIA bloc in Bihar led by RJD, like the BETI programme, which deals with taking care of all the arrangements from birth of daughter till her marriage. Mr. Yadav also talked about other schemes like Mai-Behan Yojana to give women ₹2500 every month, schemes to increase the pension of widows, elderly people and disabled people to ₹1500. Apart from providing gas cylinders for ₹ 500, 200 units of free electricity, high-class residential coaching institutes for daughters, world-class sports training and other facilities, job and employment, free examination form, free fare to and from the examination center and control on paper leak. 'Your brother Tejashwi has decided a lot more for you, and only a little time is left for the assembly elections. The people's government will come and your brother Tejashwi will fulfil his vow and start delivering these schemes to every home and to every sister,' Mr. Yadav said. Without mentioning the name of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the RJD leader said that Bihar has been a victim of negative politics for the last 20 years, and the man sitting on the throne earlier used to sing the song of impossible all the time and now giving doles keeping election in mind. 'Nothing is impossible, and in 17 months, I turned that impossible work into reality. I was asked from where will I bring money to provide jobs, will it come from my father's house, but we showed by providing lakhs of jobs,' Mr. Yadav said. He requested the sisters not to fall into the trap of the latest announcement made by the Bihar CM ahead of the assembly election. 'I take one more pledge, as soon as we come to power, the ₹ 70,000 crore embezzled by this government will be taken back from them and will be given to the sisters of Bihar as a Rakshabandhan shagun,' Mr. Yadav said. He asserted that sisters of Bihar and every resident of Bihar will teach a lesson to the NDA government by defeating them and their negative, destructive, inefficient, greedy, corrupt, dictatorial, divisive, useless, violent, criminals-protecting old government and will form the Mahagathbandhan government.

More trouble for Tejashwi Yadav as EC sets deadline for RJD leader to surrender 'fake' EPIC card by ..., says EPIC card...

The Election Commission on Friday told RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav that it was a crime to forge and use a bogus government document and set a deadline for him to submit his 'apparently fake' Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) by August 16. A fresh letter was issued to the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar assembly by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Patna (Sadar) cum Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for Digha assembly constituency in this regard. What is the deadline set by the Election Commission for surrendering the EPIC card? In a letter, the Election Officer, Patna, wrote to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. The letter reads,'…It seems that the EPIC displayed by you during a press conference is fake. Making and using false government documents is a legal offence. You are requested to submit the seemingly false EPIC at our office by 5 pm on 16th August.' The Official had last week written to the former Deputy CM, urging him to 'hand over for investigation' the voter card which he claimed to possess despite it having been 'not issued officially'. In the latest letter, the ERO said that a perusal of the voters list for the past several years has led to the conclusion that the EC had never issued the voter card with the EPIC number quoted by Yadav. In a letter issued by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), it was noted that Tejashwi Yadav, during a press conference on August 2, claimed his EPIC number was RAB2916120. Why has Tejashwi Yadav been asked to surrender his EPIC card? However, a search for the number on the Election Commission of India's website following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2025 did not yield any result, as the name linked to it was missing from the draft electoral roll. The district administration said its investigation found Tejashwi Yadav's name listed in the voter roll under EPIC number RAB0456228 with serial number 416 at the Bihar Animal Sciences University's library building at polling station number 204. This same number was mentioned in the RJD leader's affidavits for the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections, as well as in the form submitted to the Booth Level Officer during SIR-2025. Officials said the number RAB2916120 displayed at the press conference does not appear to have been issued by the Election Commission, and termed it 'seemingly fake'. What does the Election Commission say about the EPIC card's authenticity? 'It appears that the aforementioned EPIC card is fake. Forging and using a bogus government document in the eyes of the law is a crime. You are once again requested to surrender your apparently fake EPIC card by 16/08/2025 till 5 pm,' the letter read. Yadav had in a press conference on August 2 and said that a search conducted with his EPIC number was yielding the result 'no records found' in the draft electoral rolls prepared as part of Special Intensive Revision (SIR). When the claim was rejected by the District Administration in Patna, Yadav alleged that his EPIC number had been 'changed'. Later, Yadav admitted that he did have the voter ID card with the EPIC number quoted by the officials, but sought to blame them for issuance of two EPIC cards in his favour.
