Dehradun: Two men from West Bengal were detained on Sunday evening as part of the ongoing 'Op Kalnemi' in Badrinath after they allegedly failed to produce valid ID documents during a verification carried out on over 600 seers.
Op Kalnemi was initiated during the Kanwar Yatra against men who have allegedly been posing as seers and godmen to dupe people, including women and youths, in the state.
Police said the detained men were being questioned further to verify their credentials. A senior officer added, "As the operation continues, many seers have left the shrine amid the intensified checks. Police have been carrying out verification at regular intervals, but efforts have ramped up since the launch of Op Kalnemi during the Kanwar Yatra, following CM Pushkar Singh Dhami's directive last week."
Meanwhile, in Dehradun on Monday, police arrested 29 more individuals posing as holy men to dupe mainly women and youngsters on the pretext of offering religious and astrological solutions to their daily problems. Twenty of those arrested belong to other states.
Police said over 200 people have been arrested across the state so far since the operation began on Friday.

Man missing for 20 yrs found posing as sadhu under ‘Op Kalnemi', reunited with family

Roorkee: A man who had been missing for 20 years was reunited with his family on Tuesday after Roorkee police found him living at Piran Kaliyar Sharif Dargah disguised as a seer. Jitendra Kashyap, 35, had left his home in Moradabad's Dalpatpur village in 2005 when he was 15 after his widowed mum denied him money to purchase snacks, said police. He had remained untraceable despite his family's efforts, and his mum, who faced a severe emotional toll after his 'disappearance', died around eight years ago, without being able to find him. Kashyap's real identity was only confirmed on Monday during a police verification drive as part of 'Op Kalnemi', which was initiated in Uttarakhand during the kanwar yatra against men who have allegedly been posing as seers to dupe people, mainly women and youngsters. He survived for all these years by begging at the shrine premises. Police handed him over to his surviving relatives on Tuesday, who broke down in tears upon being reunited with him. "He left on foot and gradually travelled, possibly by bus or hitching rides, before eventually reaching Kaliyar after several months. There, he began begging and started living with a few ascetics. We searched for him desperately back then. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Todos os idosos deveriam ter um desse no banheiro! Veja só! Singh, along with three other relatives, went to Kaliyar to bring him home. Kashyap had lost his father when he was barely six years old. He has a younger sister who is now married. His extended family comprises daily wage labourers. With both of his parents no longer alive, Singh informed police that he would take his nephew to live with him in Moradabad's Bathua Khera village. "It was extremely difficult to get any information from Jitendra about his family. Since he is someone with learning difficulties, we had to patiently probe and piece together fragments of information before finally identifying his relatives," said Ravindra Kumar, in-charge of Piran Kaliyar police station. He added that this was the first such case under Op Kalnemi in the state where a missing person was reunited with his family. Piran Kaliyar police have so far identified and detained 12 individuals posing as seers under the operation.

Operation Kalnemi: Over 300 Fake Babas Nabbed In Uttarakhand

HALDWANI: In a sweeping crackdown on imposters exploiting religious sentiments, Uttarakhand Police on Tuesday has taken action against more than 300 fake babas under Operation Kalnemi across the Kumaon division. The initiative, launched under the directive of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aims to weed out fraudulent spiritual figures misguiding the public in the name of faith. Speaking to IANS, Inspector General (IG) Kumaon Riddhim Agarwal confirmed that the operation was conducted across all six districts of the Kumaon region, where over 300 individuals posing as saints, babas, or spiritual guides were identified. Action has been initiated through FIRs, challans, and preventive detentions. 'These individuals were exploiting people's faith through superstition, deceit, and false claims of divine powers,' Agarwal told IANS. 'They had no valid identity proof or documentation to support their credentials. During the campaign, suspects were taken into custody, their backgrounds verified, and necessary legal action was taken.' Agarwal further added that all police stations and outposts across Kumaon have been instructed to remain vigilant and continue the crackdown against suspicious figures masquerading as spiritual leaders. The operation is inspired by the mythological figure Kalnemi, a demon who appeared as a saint to mislead people. Drawing from this allegory, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami launched Operation Kalnemi on July 10, calling it a necessary move to protect the image of Sanatan Dharma. 'Just as the demon Kalnemi used disguise to deceive, many such 'Kalnemis' exist in today's society who are misusing religion to commit crimes,' CM Dhami had said while launching the initiative. 'This is an effort to protect people's faith and ensure that only true spiritual guides lead our communities.' The move comes at a time when Uttarakhand is witnessing increased religious activity due to the ongoing pilgrimage season. With sacred towns like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Kedarnath drawing large crowds, the government aims to ensure the safety and sanctity of these gatherings. The campaign has received widespread support from across the political spectrum. BJP national spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi praised the move, emphasising the need to end religious exploitation. 'Conversion through money, deception, or coercion must be strictly monitored and curbed,' he said. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal echoed the sentiment, stating, 'With the rise in awareness about Sanatan Dharma, many fake babas are trying to take advantage. I commend CM Dhami for protecting the integrity of our saintly traditions.' BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain also voiced his support. 'Many fake people are looting innocent believers with false promises and 'miracles.' This campaign will help unmask them,' he told. Interestingly, even Opposition parties backed the initiative, albeit with pointed remarks. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey welcomed the crackdown but urged the CM to look inward. 'Catching fake babas is commendable, but CM Dhami must also identify the 'Kalnemis' within his own party who are corrupt and creating social unrest,' he remarked.

Why Pushkar Dhami ordered ‘Operation Kaalnemi' during Kanwar Yatra

As the Kanwar Yatra, the annual pilgrimage of Shiva devotees, picks momentum, the Uttarakhand government has started a first-of-its-kind 'Operation Kaalnemi' to take action against imposters defrauding people in the name of Sanatan earlier this week on the orders of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the operation mainly targets the plains districts of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. In just a few days, the police have detained over 220 'fake' this week, Dhami announced he has given instructions to officers to start Operation Kaalnemi. 'Many cases have come to light in the state wherein anti-social elements are cheating people, especially women, by disguising themselves as saints and sages. This is not only hurting the religious sentiments of people but also harming the image of social harmony and Sanatan tradition. In such a situation, if a person of any religion is found doing such acts, strict action will be taken,' Dhami posted on Kaalnemi draws its name from Kaalnemi, a demon in the Ramayana known for deceit. According to the epic, when Lakshman was wounded in battle, Lord Hanuman was sent to bring the life-restoring Sanjeevani herb. Ravan, desperate to stop him, summoned Kaalnemi to mislead Lord Hanuman. Disguised as a sage, Kaalnemi set up an ashram along Hanuman's path, hoping to trick him. But Lord Hanuman saw through the disguise and killed Kaalnemi before continuing on his mission. 'Just as the demon Kaalnemi tried to mislead people by disguising himself as a saint, similarly, many Kaalnemi are active in society, who are committing crimes by disguising themselves as religious people. Our government is fully committed to protecting public sentiments, the dignity of Sanatan culture and maintaining social harmony. Those who spread hypocrisy in the name of faith will not be spared under any circumstances,' said to data shared by the Uttarakhand police, 52 such imposters have been caught so far in Haridwar. In Udham Singh Nagar, police said, several people were posing as 'Peer Fakir Baba' and preying on the poor and distressed. Police there have detained 66 such Dehradun, police have arrested 111 people over the past four days. 'The police are also keeping a close watch on people of a particular religion who cheat innocent people in the name of exorcism by showing fear of witchcraft, divine wrath, etc. Imposters coming from West Bengal, Bihar and other states are playing with the religious sentiments of the common people. The impostor may belong to any religion. If involved in such activities, action will be taken,' the Dehradun police said in a year, during the Kanwar Yatra, the Uttarakhand police had ordered all eateries and shops to display their names clearly—a move that drew criticism for being seen to identify Muslim-owned establishments. Many believe Operation Kaalnemi resembles that earlier effort in the sense that it too targets a specific concern linked to faith during the the stated aim this time is to act against religious imposters, the pattern of special measures during the Kanwar Yatra suggests a recurring anxiety about those seen as outsiders within the larger religious the number of arrests under Operation Kaalnemi rises, Dhami has warned that 'all those living as impostors should either reveal their true identities or be prepared for strict action'. He has also appealed to the public to help identify suspected to India Today Magazine- Ends
