F1 chief Stefano Domenicali tells Keir Starmer what sets the UK apart: ‘The home of our sport'

Yahoo03-07-2025
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali has revealed what sets the UK apart in the sport in a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of Silverstone.
Starmer welcomed a host of F1 personalities, including drivers Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon, to 10 Downing Street on Wednesday in celebration of the sport's 75th anniversary year.

With close to half a million set to flock to the British Grand Prix this weekend, Domenicali believes it is not simply the country's passion for motorsport that makes it so integral to F1, but also what it puts into the industry, highlighting the UK's burgeoning employment sector in F1 that is unmatched by any other.
"Next year, nine of the 11 Formula 1 teams will have a base here. We have our office and technical centre here in the UK. No other country can make that claim, and we are very proud of it,' said Domenicali.
"But this is not just about the presence here, it is about what we bring with fans, employees at 4,500 companies working with the sport, 41,000 jobs linked to the F1. And 25,000 highly skilled engineers. We generate over £12bn to the UK economy and help keep the country a leader in world-class innovation, technology and skills.
"This country is passionate about Formula 1 motorsport, and very proud of it. Seventy-five years ago, Formula 1 started here in the UK at Silverstone in 1950. Since then, it has become a British institution with deep roots and a huge contribution to the country.'

Domenicali has run the sport since 2019 and recently agreed a new five-year deal to remain in his post.
Other attendees at Downing Street included leaders of the incoming Cadillac F1 operation Graeme Lowdon and Daniel Towriss, F1 Academy managing director Susie Wolff, and F1 legends Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill, Martin Brundle and Jenson Button.
Starmer added: "It is really great to have you and to celebrate that so many teams have chosen the UK as their base. This is pretty extraordinary - the sheer number of teams that are based here, just like the headquarters of Formula 1 itself. And next season's new teams on the grid - Cadillac, which opened a new facility at Silverstone, and Audi's building its technical centre near there as well.
"So the continuation of the British stamp on the sport is absolutely there. In fact, there is only one team without a presence here, and I did wonder whether it would be too much of a diplomatic incident if I tried to lure Ferrari out of Italy, and whether it would increase our relationship or not!"
The British GP is race 12 of the 2025 F1 season and will be nine-time winner Lewis Hamilton's first home race in Ferrari red.

Torpedo-bodied Hispano-Suiza Named Best of Show at 74th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

2025 Charitable Donations Surpass $4 Million PEBBLE BEACH, Calif., Aug. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A unique aero-inspired Hispano-Suiza was awarded the top prize at the 2025 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This year, 229 cars—including 55 international entries from 22 countries and 174 US entries from 31 states—pulled onto the competition field, and the car named Best of Show was a 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo shown by Penny and Lee Anderson Sr. of Naples, Florida. "This Hispano-Suiza ticks every possible box," said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. "The underpinnings are technically advanced. The body is meticulously hand-crafted, light, and lovely. It was, notably, commissioned by aperitif scion André Dubonnet, and he raced it in both the Targa Florio and Coppa Florio. "A later owner added pontoon fenders to the car, but the Andersons sought to return the car to its original form so you can see and truly appreciate its torpedo shape." Known as the "Tulipwood" Torpedo, the car is in fact constructed of strips of mahogany, each individually carved to shape and joined to the inner ribs by 8,500 rivets. It reportedly weighed just 160 pounds when first built. Lee Anderson said it was all the wood that first attracted him to the car. "I like wood! I'm a wood boat antique collector. I started collecting them 40 years ago, before it became vogue-ish to do that. So I've always loved varnished wood, and when I saw this I said, 'My gosh! This is right in my wheelhouse. This is what I really like." Asked whether the win was expected, Penny exclaimed, "We had no idea, but we were dreaming about it!" This year's race for Best of Show featured several strong contenders, including the 1939 Maybach SW38 Spohn Sport Zweisitzer shown by Dana and Patti Mecum of Geneva Lake, Wisconsin; the 1933 Invicta 4½ Litre S Type Corsica Drophead Coupé shown by SBH of Riffa, Bahrain; and the 1956 Maserati 200SI Fantuzzi Open Sports Racer shown by Phillip Sarofim of Beverly Hills, California. The Pebble Beach Concours has already raised more than $4 million for charity this year, bringing the event's total charitable donations to over $45 million to date. Through Pebble Beach Company Foundation, these funds will benefit nearly 100 local nonprofits and impact the lives of more than 10,000 children annually. The 75th Celebration of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will be held at The Lodge at Pebble Beach on August 16, 2026, and will feature the marque of Ferrari and the coachbuilder Vignale. The event will also be celebrating the automotive history that has been made at Pebble Beach, with curated classes for Pebble Beach Road Racing greats and a very special gathering that pays tribute to iconic groups of cars first brought together at the Pebble Beach Concours. More details and features will be announced this fall. 'This Motor Might Say Land Rover…:' Mechanic Lifts the Hood of a Luxury SUV. Then He Reveals Who Actually Makes the Engine

Land Rover owners expect rugged British style and refinement. But lift the hood on certain models and you might find a surprise stamped right into the metal: Ford Motor Company. Mechanic and automotive-minded creator Larry Law ( @ ) is all smiles in a viral clip where he reveals the provenance of Land Rover's critical components to potential owners. 'This motor might say Land Rover, but on the side of it, it says Ford Motor Company. So you thinking you getting some kind of Porsche,' he says while looking under the hood of a Land Rover sitting in his repair bay. 'This is a 5.0. This is a 302 Ford.' When Ford and Land Rover Shared Parts In the world of automotive manufacturing, luxury brands sometimes borrow engineering from broader platforms, especially when cost-sharing or corporate ownership comes into play. Following Ford's 2000 acquisition of Land Rover , several V‑8 engines in Land Rover models were produced at Ford facilities. The AJ‑V8 family, designed by Jaguar, is a perfect example. Despite its British design, production occurred within a dedicated 'plant‑within‑a‑plant' at Ford's Bridgend Engine Plant in Wales. Then They Call Her Back and Say They Miscalculated the Price and She Owes $3,800 More The Bridgend plant , active from 1980 to 2020, produced over 22 million engines during its lifetime and served Ford, Jaguar, Volvo, and Land Rover operations. In August 2020, Land Rover confirmed it would shift engine production in‑house after Bridgend's closure. The 5.0-liter engine that Larry refers to is most likely the AJ-V8 (AJ133) , which powered certain Range Rover models between 2009 and 2012. While its displacement matches Ford's classic 302 cubic-inch V-8, the AJ-V8 is a distinct design , making it more of a cousin than a direct descendant. Automotive enthusiasts point out that, although these engines were built in Ford facilities, their internals were explicitly developed for Jaguar and Land Rover applications. The AJ-V8 also features direct fuel injection and a hemispherical-like combustion chamber, which the mechanic likened to Chrysler's 'Hemi' design. While the comparison captures the general shape and injector placement, it's more a colorful analogy than a technical match. Many of the Land Rover models using this engine were also paired with Ford-sourced automatic transmissions, underscoring the level of component sharing between the two brands during and after Ford's ownership. Sharing powertrain components is a strategy that demonstrates smart economics. By using a common engine platform, manufacturers reduce development costs and leverage proven systems. Ford's use of the Bridgend facility exemplified this: Jaguar (and later Land Rover) could tap into existing production lines without setting up a completely separate factory. After the Bridgend closure, JLR invested in its engine production capabilities, bringing operations to its Wolverhampton Engine Manufacturing Centre. Why It Matters to Owners For Land Rover owners, the connection to Ford has real-world implications for maintenance, repair, and brand perception. On the positive side, using Ford-sourced internals can make it easier to source replacement parts , particularly in markets with an extensive Ford service network. Many independent mechanics are already familiar with Ford V-8 systems, which can translate into shorter repair times and potentially lower labor costs. The components themselves also carry a track record from years of use in other vehicles, lending them a degree of proven durability . However, the discovery that a luxury SUV's engine bears Ford branding can be unsettling for some buyers who expect entirely bespoke engineering under the Land Rover badge. Paying premium prices for a vehicle that shares significant mechanical DNA with less expensive models also raises questions about perceived value . However, in practice, the integration and refinement often remain firmly in the luxury category. The Ford–Land Rover collaboration is far from unique in the automotive world. Across the industry, luxury automakers have long relied on sister companies or corporate group resources to source components and share technology. Aston Martin, for example, has incorporated Ford-derived switchgear and electronics into several of its models, a legacy of Ford's former partial ownership stake in the brand. Bentley, meanwhile, has built vehicles on Volkswagen Group modular platforms and used VW-sourced powertrains, blending high-end craftsmanship with shared engineering foundations. Such practices are rooted in economics. Component and platform sharing allows manufacturers to maintain brand identity while achieving the cost efficiencies of large-scale production. For owners curious about their own vehicle's mechanical heritage, there are several ways to trace an engine's origin. VIN decoding tools , available online or through dealerships, can identify the specific engine type and where it was built. A visual inspection of the engine block may also reveal stamped markings such as 'Ford Motor Company' that point directly to its provenance. Additionally, reviewing factory service manuals, official parts catalogs, or detailed service histories can uncover information about part suppliers and manufacturing sources, offering a clearer picture of the vehicle's lineage. Tesla almost halves UK monthly lease fee as sales slump, The Times reports

(Reuters) -British motorists can now lease a Tesla electric vehicle for just over half of what they would have paid a year ago, The Times reported on Monday, citing industry sources. Tesla has been forced to offer discounts of up to 40% to car leasing companies to shift more units, the report said. The discounts are also due to the lack of storage space for Tesla vehicles in the UK, the report said. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Tesla's July sales in the UK fell about 60% to 987 units in July, according to the latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). British new car registrations overall fell about 5% year-on-year in July, according to the SMMT. Battery electric vehicles are now projected to account for 23.8% of new registrations in 2025, slightly up from SMMT's previous forecast of 23.5%. Sign in to access your portfolio
