Brit woman becomes flatpack world champion after rapid bedside table build
Taking a mere nine minutes and 33 seconds to build a bedside table, Hayley McAuley proved she had the speed and determination needed to become a champion.
A woman has said she is 'thrilled' after becoming the first person to be crowned Flatpack world champion.
The Flatpack World Championships, which is in its first year, saw eight competitors battle it out to build flatpack furniture as speedily as they could, at the opening of Grand Designs Live at ExCel London on Friday.
The contest was split into two rounds and involved participants making bookcases and bedside tables.
Taking a mere nine minutes and 33 seconds to build a bedside table, Hayley McAuley proved she had the speed and determination needed to become a champion.
'It's been a rollercoaster of a morning, and I am absolutely thrilled to have been crowned Flatpack World Champion,' Ms McAuley, from Wigan, said.
'When I first heard about the competition I jumped at the chance to enter as I've always thought I'm a bit of a machine when it comes to building flatpack furniture.
'Everyone truly did a fantastic job.'

Ms McAuley was awarded with a golden Allen key medal and congratulated by Kevin McCloud, who was the host of the event and is best known for presenting Grand Designs.
McCloud said: 'This was great fun and hugely amusing. It was wonderful to see who took this seriously, and who accidentally sabotaged their own attempts to win.
'We had a really spectacular audience who found it hugely entertaining.'
The furniture pieces are to be donated to the charity British Heart Foundation. Grand Designs Live will run from May 2 to 5 and is in its 20th year.

Disney legend dies as tributes pour in for 'well-loved powerhouse'
The 58-year-old has passed following a cancer battle, a statement has confirmed. A well-loved Disney publicist has passed away after an eight month battle with cancer. The death of 58-year-old entertainment publicist Danny Duran was confirmed in a touching social media post. He reportedly passed away on Wednesday, June 4. The statement shared on Facebook by City of Signal Hill council member Keir Jones read: "We lost a truly special soul last night—Danny Duran passed away in Los Angeles, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and brilliance that touched so many lives. "Danny was not only a beloved husband and friend—he was a powerhouse in the world of publicity, the founder of ddPR, and a trusted voice behind major studios like Disney, Lionsgate, and Universal. "His career spanned decades, including work on iconic films like The Lion King, Evita, The Rock, and Con Air, and representing clients with a quiet confidence and undeniable grace." The statement continued: "Danny's passing is a profound loss to all who knew him, but the love he gave—to Blaine (his husband), to his friends, to his work—remains a lasting gift. "Rest in peace, Danny. You were light in every room you entered, and your spirit will live on in all of us who had the privilege to know you." In 2000, Danny founded ddPR, launching the firm with Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment as a client. He helped the division transition from VHS to DVD and then Blu-ray, where he supported the release of titles including 'The Lion King,' 'Snow White' and 'The Little Mermaid.' He handled personal publicity for Jon Hamm, Beth Grant, as well as other actors, and was heavily valued for his personal approach to work, reported The Mirror. Beth Grant was among those paying tribute to Danny. Beth, who starred on shows such as The Mindy Project, wrote: "Danny was a lovely, special friend for over 20 years. "He helped me navigate the public relations in Hollywood in the most wonderfully kind and understated ways. "I'll always remember the sparkle in his eyes and his sweet smile. "I'm so saddened by this loss, not just for me, but for our community. My husband, Michael Chieffo, joins me in gratitude for the happy memories we shared with Danny. "We shall love him always." Executive VP of Content Strategy and Integration Marketing, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Amelia McPartlon Rogers also said: "Danny was a tireless champion — for his clients, the causes he believed in, and the friends, family and colleagues fortunate enough to be in his orbit. "His belief in me early in my career helped lay the foundation for my future, and I will be forever grateful for his encouragement and loving friendship."

Billy Joel says 'I'm not dying' after cancelling tour due to brain condition
The music legend's Murrayfield Stadium gig was due to take place on June 6, but was cancelled along with the rest of Joel's tour due to his health. Billy Joel was forced to cancel his entire 2025 tour, having been diagnosed with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The star was due to take the stage at Murrayfield Stadium on June 6, a gig which had previously been postponed to give him time to recover from surgery. The 'Uptown Girl' singer has been diagnosed with NPH, which is a condition that causes a build-up of fluid in the brain. The 76-year-old's team shared a statement with fans on May 23, apologising for the cancellation of his tour. It said that his brain condition"has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.' And the singer added: "I am sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.' However, since then the star has been quiet, and was notably absent from the screening of his new documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' last Wednesday, June 4, at Tribeca Film Festival. Despite his absence, he relayed a message to the crowd through the film's co-director, Susan Lacy. 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. "In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated,'' Lacy told the audience, reported Deadline. He also assured his fans that 'he will be back.' The two founders of Tribeca Film Festival- Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal- also acknowledged Joel's health condition and absence. Rosenthal said: 'Billy wanted to be with us tonight, but as you may have heard, he's dealing with a health issue and had to postpone his performances, including this one tonight. "We know you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.' De Niro added: 'He's our piano man, a wonderful, integral part of the heartbeat of our city. "Tonight, we get to see the man behind the music and behind the legend. You're in for a real treat.' According to outlet NJ, radio host Howard Stern recently had a conversation with Billy Joel, in which the star urged him to let fans know that he 'is not dying'. During a recent episode of The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, Stern discussed a recent dinner he had with Joel. Stern said: 'He does have issues. But he said to me- so I'm not saying anything crazy- 'Yeah, you can tell people: I'm not dying.' He wants people to know that. "He's got to deal with some medical stuff. But he was delightful. We had a great time with the wives. Billy's doing okay.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Corrie's Todd left in shock as Theo's daughter Millie drops major bombshell
Theo Silverton's (James Cartwright) daughter Millie (Kaitlyn Earley) once again threatens to drive a wedge in his relationship with Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) in Coronation Street next week. Millie has already caused a fair few problems for Todd. Earlier this year, her mum Danielle Silverton (Natalie Anderson) walked in on Todd and Theo kissing, after accusing Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) of being the one sleeping with him. She called at the undertakers demanding some answers from her dad, which made Todd feel uneasy. He then heard a car alarm sounding from a hearse outside, and realised she'd vandalised the vehicle with a tin of paint! Theo couldn't see the error of her ways and leapt to her defence.
