Judge expresses concerns over youth falling prey to cancer owing to tobacco use
Speaking at an event commemorating World No Tobacco Day at Siddhartha Law College in Kalaburagi on Saturday, he described the trend as deeply concerning.
The programme, held under the theme 'Attractive Products, Deadly Intentions', was jointly organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, the District Legal Services Authority, the district Health and Family Welfare Department, the district tobacco control cell, the National Oral Health Programme, and the NSS unit of Siddhartha Law College.
After inaugurating the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp, Mr. Navale expressed concerns over young people increasingly falling prey to the tobacco menace, even after witnessing the visible distress faced by families when their children fall into harmful habits.
'Families are pushed into severe financial crisis and emotional turmoil, yet many youth remain unaware of the dangers. Scientific studies have shown that tobacco contains high levels of nicotine, a harmful component linked to cancer. The Supreme Court intervened and mandated that warning labels highlighting the adverse effects of tobacco be printed on product packaging,' he remarked, recalling how tobacco was first introduced to India by the Portuguese, and its consumption spread rapidly thereafter.
Urging students to steer clear of all vices, he emphasised the importance of knowledge and healthy living. 'Health is wealth,' he reminded the gathering.
Sharanabasappa Khyatanal, district health and family welfare officer, warned of the grave health risks posed by tobacco and cigarette consumption. 'Youngsters today are often influenced by film celebrities and are drawn into harmful habits. All departments must work together to raise awareness and build a healthier society,' he said.
Presiding over the event, Shantappa Sooran, general secretary of K.P.E. Society, Kalaburagi, called upon the youth to refrain from developing addictions and advised schools, colleges, and universities to educate students about the consequences of tobacco use.
Rakesh Kamble, district tobacco control officer, accused tobacco companies of using harmful substances and aggressive marketing tactics to increase sales and urged the government to take strict action to curb such practices.
As part of the World No Tobacco Day observance, Aarthi Dhanushree led participants in a pledge against tobacco use. Chandrashekhar Sheelavant, principal of Siddhartha Law College, delivered the welcome address.
Winner of various competitions organised to raise awareness about the adverse impacts of tobacco use — Syed Thaher Fatima, Prashant S., and and Sushma B.M. — were honoured with prizes. N.V. Noothan School was awarded for excellence in the slogan competition.

Expressing concern about drug abuse and the spread of HIV in the Northeast, including Tripura, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Tuesday said the state witnessed a steep rise of 103 per cent in drug seizures, while the destruction of seized drugs also saw an increase of 130 per cent in 2023-24. Speaking about HIV at a state-level programme titled 'Bell of Awareness' at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala on the occasion of International Youth Day, Saha said, 'At present, Tripura ranks fourth in the (Northeast) region.' Currently, the state government provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,000 to 3,433 HIV-positive individuals. Warning students about how drug addiction does not happen overnight but gradually, he said, 'You (students) must be cautious when it comes to drugs. Parents should pay special attention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-ji and Union Home Minister Amit Shah-ji laid emphasis on building a nashamukt Bharat (drug-free India). Our government is also following a zero-tolerance policy on drugs to make Tripura nashamukt.' 'But it is not possible only with the efforts of the state government or any department. In this case, all sections of society are required to come forward to combat HIV/AIDS,' the chief minister said while urging to expand the activities of Red Ribbon Clubs in schools and colleges to combat the infection. At least 6,000 students from across the state attended the event. Saha said the state government is also thinking about spreading awareness in schools about HIV/AIDS and the dangers of drug abuse by incorporating it in the curriculum. According to the Health and Family Welfare department, Tripura reported having 1,845 people with HIV during the 2022-23 period, 1,790 people in 2023-24, and 1,185 in 2024-25 (till January this year). Pharmacist association urges CM Majhi for early recruitment of heath workers
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Registered Pharmacist Association (ORPA) has appealed to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to direct the Health and Family Welfare department to expedite the recruitment of pharmacy officers and multipurpose male health workers. In a memorandum to the chief minister, the association claimed that though the state government had notified 1,657 posts, including 1,451 pharmacy officers and 206 multipurpose male health workers in 2023, their recruitment hangs in balance. The association members said the Odisha Sub-ordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC) had received applications for the notified posts in December, 2023 and the computer-based test (CBT) was conducted on August 3, 2024. Although the results were published on June 16 this year along with the list of selected candidates along with the district of their choice, they are yet to get the appointment letter. ORPA general secretary Sabyasachi Panda said even though two months have passed since the results of the final examination were announced, the government has not issued appointment letters to the selected candidates. 'The candidates have already lost two years in the recruitment process. The government should immediately issue appointment letters without any further delay,' he said. The association has also requested Health minister Mukesh Mahaling to take steps in this regard.
