Judge expresses concerns over youth falling prey to cancer owing to tobacco use
A significant number of young people are succumbing to cancer as a result of tobacco and smoking addictions, said senior civil judge and District Legal Services Authority member-secretary Srinivas Navale.
Speaking at an event commemorating World No Tobacco Day at Siddhartha Law College in Kalaburagi on Saturday, he described the trend as deeply concerning.
The programme, held under the theme 'Attractive Products, Deadly Intentions', was jointly organised by the district administration, the zilla panchayat, the District Legal Services Authority, the district Health and Family Welfare Department, the district tobacco control cell, the National Oral Health Programme, and the NSS unit of Siddhartha Law College.
After inaugurating the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp, Mr. Navale expressed concerns over young people increasingly falling prey to the tobacco menace, even after witnessing the visible distress faced by families when their children fall into harmful habits.
'Families are pushed into severe financial crisis and emotional turmoil, yet many youth remain unaware of the dangers. Scientific studies have shown that tobacco contains high levels of nicotine, a harmful component linked to cancer. The Supreme Court intervened and mandated that warning labels highlighting the adverse effects of tobacco be printed on product packaging,' he remarked, recalling how tobacco was first introduced to India by the Portuguese, and its consumption spread rapidly thereafter.
Urging students to steer clear of all vices, he emphasised the importance of knowledge and healthy living. 'Health is wealth,' he reminded the gathering.
Sharanabasappa Khyatanal, district health and family welfare officer, warned of the grave health risks posed by tobacco and cigarette consumption. 'Youngsters today are often influenced by film celebrities and are drawn into harmful habits. All departments must work together to raise awareness and build a healthier society,' he said.
Presiding over the event, Shantappa Sooran, general secretary of K.P.E. Society, Kalaburagi, called upon the youth to refrain from developing addictions and advised schools, colleges, and universities to educate students about the consequences of tobacco use.
Rakesh Kamble, district tobacco control officer, accused tobacco companies of using harmful substances and aggressive marketing tactics to increase sales and urged the government to take strict action to curb such practices.
As part of the World No Tobacco Day observance, Aarthi Dhanushree led participants in a pledge against tobacco use. Chandrashekhar Sheelavant, principal of Siddhartha Law College, delivered the welcome address.
Winner of various competitions organised to raise awareness about the adverse impacts of tobacco use — Syed Thaher Fatima, Prashant S., and and Sushma B.M. — were honoured with prizes. N.V. Noothan School was awarded for excellence in the slogan competition.

CM launches year-long campaign against drugs
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday launched a year-long State-wide campaign against drugs and intoxicants and asserted that awareness is the only solution to prevent tobacco-related deaths in the country. Majhi launched the campaign at the State-level programme held on the occasion of 'World No Tobacco Day'. 'About 1.4 million people lose their lives in India every year due to tobacco use. Among the deaths reported in the country every year due to various causes, about 10 per cent are due to tobacco use alone,' he said. Stating that it was time for the public, especially the youth, to take this issue seriously, Majhi appealed to all to join the awareness campaign against intoxicants and drugs. 'I call upon all to take a resolution to adopt a life free from addiction. Say no to tobacco, say yes to life,' he said. The awareness campaign will continue for about a year across the State from May 31 to June 26 in the first phase, June 26 to August 15 in the second phase, October 2 (third phase) and December 25 to January 15, 2026 in the fourth phase. The Chief Minister said the door-to-door awareness campaign will create awareness about the ill effects and health hazards of tobacco use. He said people should be made aware that 100 per cent of oral cavity cancer or lung cancer is caused by tobacco and cigarette use. 'If the only truth in the world is death, then why should it be painful? Therefore, everyone should adopt a healthy lifestyle,' he said, adding that advertisements of tobacco, cigarettes and drugs are also affecting the youth. He advised people to be careful about these deceptive advertisements. The Chief Minister also stressed on enforcement to check the prevalence of drug abuse and adulterated liquor. He said joint efforts should be made by Excise, Home Department and Narcotics Control Bureau to take strict action against the culprits. 'Efforts are being made to completely stop the sale of tobacco and drugs by empowering the STF. A new excise policy will be formulated soon to crack down on all types of intoxicants,' the Chief Minister said. At the event, Majhi launched the logo, theme song and handbook of the State-wide awareness campaign. Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the government has, for the first time, launched a comprehensive awareness programme against the use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. 'We will spread this message to the last person of the society. Apart from excise, the participation of other departments and civil society is also needed. The punishment for the offenders under the new Excise Act will be stricter,' he said. Odisha's brand ambassador of Nishamukti Abhiyan and sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik said it is the responsibility and duty of all to take this campaign to every home. The district collectors and excise officers of all the districts attended the programme virtually. In another event organised by the Health and Family Welfare department, stress was laid on interdepartmental coordination and public engagement. On this occasion, a signature campaign was launched to involve citizens in pledging their support to a tobacco-free Odisha. The department also released newly developed IEC (information-education campaign) materials to educate the public, particularly youth and vulnerable communities, on the risks associated with tobacco use. The event also witnessed the digital launch of the ToFEI (Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions) web application, which will assist schools and colleges in self-assessing and reporting their compliance with national tobacco-free guidelines.

Odisha reports 12 COVID-19 cases with mild symptoms; officials urge calm as Omicron variants detected
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 1 (ANI): The Director of Public Health, Government of Odisha, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, on Sunday said that the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state has risen to 12, further adding that the patients had mild symptoms and were being treated in isolation. 'The number was 9 yesterday, and three more cases were detected today, bringing the total to 12. The number of cases is very low, and almost all patients diagnosed with COVID have mild symptoms. They are being treated in isolation in their own homes,' Dr Mishra told ANI. He further reassured the public, stating that the variants detected in the state are sub-lineages of Omicron, and there is no cause for concern at this point.'There is nothing to worry about in Odisha. The variants that have been detected are also Omicron variants,' he added. On May 31, Odisha Health Secretary had said that authorities were closely monitoring the situation and holding regular review meetings, as the total number of COVID-19 cases across India rose to 2,710, with Kerala reporting the highest number of active cases. On the current COVID-19 situation in Odisha, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department of the state, Aswathy S, told ANI, 'It is well within control. We have only seven identified positive cases. The first one has already recovered. There is no threat to the public at the moment. We are monitoring the situation. We are assessing the preparedness. We are conducting regular meetings.' According to the Union Health Ministry, India's COVID-19 tally has reached 2,710 active cases, with 1,170 patients discharged. The country reported seven deaths across multiple states, with comorbidities playing a significant role in most cases, according to state-wise data. According to the Health Ministry, in Delhi, one death was reported--a 60-year-old female with acute intestinal obstruction post-laparotomy, where Covid-19 was an incidental finding. Gujarat recorded one death, with details still awaited. Karnataka reported one fatality--a 70-year-old male who succumbed to acute cardiorespiratory arrest, acute encephalopathy with late-onset focal seizure, severe anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and comorbidities including diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), and ischemic heart disease (IHD). World No Tobacco Day observed with public awareness initiatives in Udupi
Udupi: The department of respiratory medicine of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, marked World No Tobacco Day on Saturday with a solemn pledge ceremony and a public awareness talk, reinforcing its continued commitment to tobacco cessation and public health advocacy. Organised by the department of respiratory medicine, the observance focused on this year's global theme: 'Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products', which draws attention to the misleading promotion of tobacco products, especially among youth, disguised as modern and less harmful alternatives. Faculty, students, and staff across the respiratory, psychiatry, and ENT departments came together to take a pledge to abstain from tobacco in all forms and to promote awareness of its adverse health consequences. The initiative served to highlight the responsibility of healthcare professionals in spearheading efforts against tobacco-related diseases. A public awareness session followed, where medical experts from the department of respiratory medicine discussed the severe health risks associated with tobacco use, including chronic respiratory conditions, cardiovascular complications, and multiple forms of cancer. The talk aimed to educate the public and encourage individuals to make informed, healthy lifestyle choices while seeking support for tobacco cessation. Postgraduate doctors Dr Deeksha Suresh and Dr Shobhitha Krishnan from the department of respiratory medicine delivered talks. They educated patients, staff, and students about the dangers of tobacco use, the harmful effects of second-hand smoke, and the importance of prevention. The speakers also explained how tobacco companies use flavours, attractive packaging, and social media to make their products more appealing. Dr Manu Mohan K, head of the department of respiratory medicine, stressed the importance of continuous education, strong regulatory measures, and accessible cessation support systems to reduce tobacco use and its harmful impact on society.
