I stayed at Travelodge's 600th property London Oval - two things jumped out
When travelling to London, Travelodge offers more than 80 locations to choose from and there's usually one close to wherever you want to visit. Staff are always friendly, rooms are always clean and come with everything you need while the buffet breakfast is both reasonably priced and delicious. On a recent cultural expedition to the capital, it suited me to be close to Victoria Station and Vauxhall, so the recently built Travelodge London Oval Cricket Ground (across the road from the cricket ground entrance) was ideal. It is a minute's walk from Oval Underground station on the Northern Line, and about half a mile from Vauxhall Station, which links to both National Rail lines and the Victoria line. There are 95 rooms at the hotel, of which 75 are standard and 20 are SuperRoom. The latter sport their own design scheme and extras such as a Lavazza coffee machine, enhanced shower, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. Both the standard and SuperRoom come in options for double, family and accessible rooms. I stayed in a Family Room with a king-size double bed and two comfortable pull down single beds. There was space underneath the bed to store luggage along with two small bedside tables housing plug and USB power points. There was also a desk with a small kettle, tea and coffee facilities, a lamp and even more power points, which were a mix of USB-C and the older USB-A ports. You also get air conditioning, a 32in TV, an armchair, clothes hangers and extra pillows. The Radfords support themselves with the proceeds of Noel's bakery, The Radford Pie Company, which is located near their home. On their website, it says: 'We have owned our own lovely bakery since 1999 which is how we manage to provide for (and feed) our huge and expanding family as well as for the local people of Heysham and Morecambe.' The family expanded their business to cater to online orders placed across the UK. The business is a family affair, with Noel at the helm, and some of their children helping out. "If they continue to get commissioned for a fourth or fifth season, then they are going to be able to command a higher fee." He estimates that the Radfords make £ 5,000 an episode. Six Waterford Heritage Week events to capture the imagination
This year's theme 'Exploring our Foundations' invites the public to delve into the building blocks of Ireland's heritage: not just the structures, but the landscapes and cultural activities that have shaped our country. Here are some of the highlights. Áonach na nDéise In Waterford, Heritage Week kicks off this weekend with Áonach na nDéise - Woodstown Viking Festival at the Waterford Greenway. This signature event of Waterford's Heritage Week Programme, supported by Waterford City and County Council, is now in its eight year. The free, family-friendly event draws great crowds every year for those who want to enjoy vigorous Viking fighting in battle re-enactments and explore the range of crafts in the Viking village from blacksmithing to spinning and weaving, jewellery making and leatherworking, to pottery and woodturning. There will be Viking games and storytelling for children, along with the outreach education team from the National Museum of Ireland and TVAS Archaeologists with their Dig in a Box for the aspiring Indiana Joneses. The Discovery Programme will also have a display explaining very exciting findings from three years of geophysical surveys from the site. A Viking boat, birds of prey display and Irish wolfhounds are always very popular with visitors. With plenty of food trucks and green spaces available on site, it's the perfect picnic spot. The great Viking spectacle takes place from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, August 16, and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday, August 17. The event may be accessed by walking or cycling, about 10 minutes, from Carriganore car park along the Greenway, adjacent to X91 XD96, turning left on crossing the N25 flyover. Lismore Bank of Ireland Some of the events lined up include a 'past, present and future' tour of the former Bank of Ireland Lismore. The open day will be held on Saturday, August 16, between 2pm and 5pm at the former Bank of Ireland Lismore to show what is planned for the building. Walk in event, no booking required.
