Is Weapons based on a true story? Inspiration behind ‘phenomenal' new horror explained

Daily Mirror11-08-2025
The chilling mystery has top marks on Rotten Tomatoes
Cinema-goers are clamouring to know whether the hit new horror film Weapons is based on a true story.

The film follows a small-town community left shaken after a group of children, who are all members of the same class, vanish without a trace after running out of their homes in the dead of night at exactly the same time. Only one child from the class turns up the next day.

Suspicion quickly turns on their teacher Justine Gandy (Julia Garner), with parents certain she is somehow involved in the mass disappearance. As the mystery deepens, some uncomfortable truths surface about the community members themselves before audiences are treated to the big reveal about what's really going on (you won't find spoilers here).

Directed by Barbarian's Zach Cregger, the film boasts a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95 per cent from critics and 87 per cent from audiences. Since its release last week, positive reviews have been flowing in, with many viewers questioning what the inspiration was for the film and unpicking what it is trying to say.
"This is a masterful piece of filmmaking that transcends the typical thriller genre, delving deep into the psychological ramifications of violence. The director, with a keen eye for detail, builds a world that feels both familiar and unnervingly alien. The performances are nothing short of phenomenal," gushed one viewer.

Meanwhile a second shared: "Cregger is clearly fascinated by the unspoken horror of suburbia and I am so impressed that a movie so clearly set up as a parable for school shootings and the way people respond with anger and panic to things they don't understand can wrap up in such a deeply funny way."
Is Weapons based on a true story?
Cregger has been open about what he drew from to create the film and whether or not it is based on a true story. In an interview with Slash Film, he shared that Weapons was actually "an autobiographical movie in a lot of ways."

He wrote the film while grappling with grief following the death of a close friend. He elaborated: "It was a personal tragedy that happened in my life. So it wasn't like a piece of media or anything like that [that inspired the story], but it was just something that happened to me.
"So it's much more, if Barbarian was an outward-facing movie, a movie that had a lot to say about society — that sounds so pretentious — but it was a movie that was looking out and talking about the world. Whereas Weapons is a movie that's very much like me looking inwards and inventorying my s***, my life."
During a chat with Variety, he explained that writing the film hadn't "exorcised any demons", but shared: "It's just given me an opportunity to engage with those feelings in a healthy, constructive way.
"Rather than going and drinking myself to death, I'm able to write a character that drinks herself into a problem. I can take my anger and have Josh Brolin freak out, and that's better than me freaking out."

‘Wall-to-wall action' spy thriller shoots up Amazon Prime Video top 10 ranking

Just days after Amazon Prime Video dropped Butterfly, the tale of international espionage has been climbing the streamer's top 10 ranking of film and TV. Set in the bustling South Korean city of Seoul, the six-part drama stars Daniel Dae Kim (of Lost and The Good Doctor) as the semi-retired gun-for-hire David Jung. Now sitting at the third spot on Amazon Prime, the show kicks off in a high-end hotel, where a visiting politician is under surveillance for a bold assassination attempt (think Day of the Jackal vibe) which is being organised by a shady and deep-pocketed private intelligence agency. The young assassin on the job is Rebecca, played by Reina Hardesty. Next on her kill list is the rogue and not-really-retired agent David, who's highly trained in field work. Adapted from a graphic novel by Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett, it turns out that David and Rebecca are known to one another. The former intelligence agent is on a mission to protect his wife and daughter, while also reckoning with an incident from his past that comes back to haunt him. Ominous stuff. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Kim has described Butterfly as 'the realisation of a longtime dream… to create a show that bridges two cultures I love deeply.' 'A central question in our entire season is, 'Who can you trust?',' Kim told USA Today. 'And just because they're family, can you trust them? The ending to our season really speaks to that question.' Kim was an executive producer on the show and has already teased what they could tackle with a second season, saying there's 'a lot more story to tell, and there are places for all of our characters to go that I find really intriguing'. He added: 'So let's hope people like it enough to make that happen.' So far so good on that front. The show has totted up a 71% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with several positive write-ups to its name. More Trending Collider praised the 'wall-to-wall action' in the show, while The AV Club wrote: 'With a tight focus and impressive performances, Butterfly's basic spycraft story feels both elevated and entertaining.' TV Guide described the show as 'slick' and a 'solid spy series'. However, not every review can be glowing and The Hollywood Reporter bemoaned the show 'needed more time in the chrysalis'. You be the judge! A version of this story was originally published on August 13. View More » Butterfly is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Got a story? Fallout gets season 2 update with Amazon Prime release window confirmed

Fallout was a smash hit on Amazon Prime Video when the video game adaptation debuted last year. The nuclear disaster drama became the second-most-watched series of all time on the streaming platform, totaling 65million viewers in its first 16 days of release, quickly earning a season two renewal. In a streaming landscape where the only show that seems to return year in, year out is The Bear (albeit with diminishing returns) Amazon has even confirmed the post-apocalyptic adventure will be back in the year after we last it. The release window has been set for this December, with a new poster providing fans a first look at the returning cast of characters. The official Amazon Prime Video account posted the promotional picture to X, showing Lucy (Ella Purnell), Ghoul (Walton Goggins), canine Dogmeat and Maximus (Aaron Moten) walking underneath the infamous Las Vegas welcome sign – now dilapidated and titled 'New' Vegas. 'Time for a little road trip. We're heading back to the Wasteland this December,' the caption read, not quite sharing the actual release date just yet. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video TV viewers are already beside themselves with excitement at the idea of returning to the nuclear Wasteland, with @RandomGoomba commenting beneath the poster: 'Start filming season 3 now. This show is gold.' The show has a near-perfect score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, currently sitting at 93% – so what can fans expect from its second outing? Good things, according to Walton Goggins. The actor was mid-filming the show earlier this year when he told Deadline: 'Season one was extraordinary, personally, I was very pleased with it. '[Season two] blows it out of the water, what these writers have done and the artisans that have come together to tell this story. It's really gonna be something. I can't wait for people to see it. We're working really hard to make that happen.' More Trending Ella Purnell, who plays wide-eyed, blue-suited Lucy, last year said she was already trying to psyche herself up for filming the psychically-gruelling episodes. In October, she told Variety: 'My only preparation so far is that I'm attempting to work out – and that's just me knowing that in six months I'm going to be running up a hill 500 times and trying not to have asthma attack.'
