Uttarakhand Cloudburst: Over 50 People Airlifted To Safety, Army Intensifies Relief Operations
Till this morning, more than 50 individuals were airlifted to safety and evacuated from Dharali, the flash flood-hit zone, to the upper reaches of Matli by helicopter. From there, the people were being transported to their respective destinations.
The officials also released a list of 55 stranded individuals, along with their phone numbers, who were airlifted to safety on Thursday - two days after raging waters swallowed villages in Dharali. During the day, many more are expected to be lifted out via helicopters.
The rescue work is being spearheaded by teams of the Indian Army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF in coordination with Uttarakhand police and the local administration.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army has also intensified its relief operations in the cloudburst-hit region of Dharali near Harsil. Over 225 troops, including specialised engineer and medical teams, are on the ground conducting rescue and relief tasks. Drones have also been deployed for aerial reconnaissance and locating stranded individuals in inaccessible areas.
With multiple road breaches reported at Bartwari, Linchigad, Gangrani, and near Dharali, Chinook and Mi-17 helicopters are positioned at Dehradun for airlift operations, while an ad hoc aviation base is being established at Matli Helipad.
Recco radar teams, search-and-rescue dogs, and five civil helicopters have been pressed into service to augment relief and rescue efforts.
"Lt Gen Sengupta, Army Commander of Central Command and GOC UB Area present at Dharali, and seamless coordination is underway with HQ Central Air Command; every possible effort is being made to ensure the safe evacuation and care of all affected. The Indian Army stands firm with the people of Uttarakhand in this hour of need," it said in a statement this morning.
Meanwhile, the Met Department has issued a Red Alert for multiple areas of the hilly state, including Pauri Garhwal, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, and Nainital, till August 12.
Schools and educational institutions have been shut as part of a precautionary measure, and people are advised to stay indoors.

Harsil artificial lake begins to recede, manual drainage underway
Uttarakashi: The temporary lake formed last week in the Kheer Ganga and Til Gad streams, which had posed a threat to downstream settlements and the Gangotri highway, is gradually receding as manual drainage efforts continue. According to the disaster management department, the artificial lake, formed near the Army camp and helipad in Harsil, initially measured about 1,200 metres in length, 150 metres in width and 4 metres in depth. Disaster management officer Shardul Gusain said, "On Saturday morning, large volumes of water were drained, shrinking the lake to about 1,000 metres in length, 120 metres in width and 3.5 metres in depth. Parapets of the highway that had been submerged have also started appearing, raising hopes that the water level is steadily receding." Officials said heavy silt from the upper reaches of the Bhagirathi has been accumulating in the lake along with water, creating tonnes of debris and hampering machine operations. Manual clearance of debris blocking the riverbank is being carried out "on a war footing," with joint efforts from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, the DDMA quick response team, the irrigation department and the police. A team of 30 engineers and personnel from Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (UJVNL) and the irrigation department has also been deployed. SDRF and UJVNL teams have cut and removed logs stuck in the lake and are manually channelising water from the shore to improve flow. Villages are under water, roads cut off and homes destroyed in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while rescue teams work to save stranded families New Delhi The death toll from flash floods in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has risen to more than 300, news agency PTI reported. Torrential rains and sudden floods hit several districts on Friday, killing over 200 people in just one day. According to Faizi, spokesperson of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the rains, cloudbursts, and floods claimed lives in Bajaur, Buner, Swat, Mansehra, Shangla, Torghar, and Battagram districts. District-wise losses The PDMA reported that a total of 307 people have died so far. • Buner recorded the highest toll with 184 deaths • Shangla lost 36 people, Mansehra 23, Swat 22, Bajaur 21, and Battagram 15 • Lower Dir reported five deaths, while one child drowned in Abbottabad Officials warned that the number may rise further as many people are still missing, PTI reported. Vehicles were swept away or damaged by debris and mud. In Lower Dir, more than 25 tourists were stranded in Shahi and later rescued by security forces and district authorities. Several link roads remained closed due to landslides, disrupting travel and even preventing candidates from reaching exam centres, Dawn reported. Power outages in Swat Floodwaters entered the 132kv grid station in Swat, cutting off 41 feeders and suspending electricity across the district. Poles and transformers were also washed away.
