Arizona Cardinals NFL Draft Big Board: Five players who make sense at each pick

New York Times03-04-2025

TEMPE, Ariz. — With top 10 picks the past two years, the Arizona Cardinals could reasonably predict how the draft might unfold before their turn to select. That won't be the case this month. At No. 16, GM Monti Ossenfort and his staff will have little idea. They'll have to be open to several possibilities.
That should make the draft, which runs April 24-26, more interesting for an organization that has made the playoffs once since 2016. Arizona's biggest needs are on the offensive and defensive lines, edge rusher, linebacker and receiver. The Cardinals enter the draft with six picks: 16, 47, 78, 115, 152 and 225.
Let's look at some options:
Arizona made strong moves during free agency, which gives them draft flexibility. Needing help along the defensive front, the Cardinals signed edge rusher Josh Sweat, along with defensive tackles Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell. This means they can focus on the best player at 16, someone such as Georgia's Jalon Walker, if available.
The explosive Walker can play linebacker or edge. The son of a coach, he also brings the football character and leadership the Cardinals seek. Alabama's Jihaad Campbell is considered the draft's top off-ball linebacker. He could replace starter Kyzir White, a free agent whose return looks unlikely.
Ossenfort believes in building the offensive line through the draft. The Cardinals need help at right guard, where previous starter Will Hernandez (also a free agent) recovers from ACL surgery. In addition, veteran right tackle Jonah Williams is entering the final year of his contract.
Alabama's Tyler Booker and Ohio State's Donovan Jackson are among the draft's top interior linemen (Jackson also played some tackle in college). Both were second-team All-Americans. Booker was a team captain and Jackson was coached by the Cardinals' new offensive line coach, Justin Frye.
It might be too soon to grab Oregon's Derrick Harmon, but Ossenfort has made trades during his first two Arizona drafts. He could slide back a few spots and take a versatile defensive tackle in the first round for the second year in a row.
Solid pick: Harmon or Jackson.
Win the draft: Walker.
Arizona's decision at 16 dictates what they do at 47, but given the draft's depth at defensive tackle and edge rusher, this would be a logical place to target those positions. Especially if Ossenfort goes offensive line in the first round.
Ohio State's Jack Sawyer and Ole Miss' Princely Umanmielen both were strong college pass rushers. Some view Sawyer, remembered for his clinching scoop-and-score touchdown against Texas in the College Football Playoff semifinals, as a late second-rounder, but the guess here is he will go earlier. Umanmielen got better as his college career unfolded, posting 10.5 sacks last season.

South Carolina's T.J. Sanders and Toledo's Darius Alexander could start as rotational pieces before developing into starting roles on the defensive line.
The Cardinals could use a promising young linebacker like UCLA's Carson Schwesinger. He began as a college walk-on and finished as one of the nation's top tacklers. His instinct and nose for the ball are elite.
Solid pick: Sawyer.
Win the draft: Schwesinger.
Ossenfort has done well in the third round in previous drafts. Syracuse corner Garrett Williams, taken in 2023, turned into one of his better picks. There's potential to do the same here at 78.
Despite selecting Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 4 last year, the Cardinals still need receivers. A hurdle: The crop in this draft isn't great. The Cardinals reportedly had a formal combine meeting with Ole Miss' Tre Harris, who has impressive size and speed, but TCU's Jack Bech may be a better fit. He's physical and has excellent ball skills.
Georgia's Tate Ratledge is a versatile offensive lineman who could help this season. Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins has the football IQ the Cardinals seek — he earned All-Academic honors in college — and is strong against the run.
UCLA's Femi Oladejo, who last season switched from off-ball linebacker to edge rusher, is a nice option if the Cardinals don't take a pass rusher in the first or second rounds.
Solid pick: Ratledge or Oladejo.
Win the draft: Bech.
Around this point, teams start to draft on potential. Colorado State's Tory Horton missed half of last season with a knee injury, but he was an All-Mountain West receiver and punt returner as a junior. William & Mary tackle Charles Grant, an FCS All-American with a 7-foot wingspan, has high potential.
Notre Dame defensive tackle Rylie Mills is more established. A three-year starter and team captain, he had 7.5 sacks in 13 games last season. Kansas corner Cobee Bryant says he was named after Kobe Bryant because his parents knew he would have a 'big dawg mentality.' That's what you want at this position. He had 13 interceptions in four seasons. Central Arkansas edge rusher David Walker, an FCS All-American, might need time but could be worth the wait.

Solid pick: Mills or Bryant.
Win the draft: Grant.
The Cardinals are set at safety with Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson, but Thompson approaches his last season under contract. At 152, it would make sense to shore up depth at the position. Alabama's Malachi Moore was a versatile defensive back and two-time team captain. Penn State's Jaylen Reed, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, is another option.
This is not a great draft for centers, but two might be worth consideration. Ohio State's Seth McLaughlin or Texas' Jake Majors could turn into a future replacement for Arizona starter Hjalte Froholdt, who's under contract for two more seasons. McLaughlin is recovering from an Achilles tear. Nebraska defensive tackle Ty Robinson, from nearby Gilbert, Ariz., had 12 TFLs last season.
Solid pick: Moore or McLaughlin.
Win the draft: Majors.
A special-teams contributor would be ideal at 225. UCF corner Mac McWilliams talked about this during his combine media session, saying he was ready to 'give it his all.' Maryland safety Dante Trader Jr., and Cal safety Craig Woodson also might do well in this role.
Receiver Ja'Corey Brooks started his career at Alabama before finishing at Louisville, where he was All-ACC. Texas Tech running back Tahj Brooks, a college workhorse, likely will go in the sixth round but could slip.
Solid pick: Trader or Woodson.
Win the draft: Tahj Brooks.

Kirk and Clase lead Blue Jays past Cardinals 5-4 in 10 innings

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alejandro Kirk homered and had four hits, including a go-ahead double in the 10th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied last in a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Kirk opened the 10th with a double off Phil Maton (0-2) to score automatic runner Addison Barger from second base. Jeff Hoffman then pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his 16th save in 19 opportunities, helping the Blue Jays (36-30) win for the 10th time in 12 games. After blowing a three-run lead in the eighth, Toronto tied it at 4 in the ninth when No. 9 batter Jonatan Clase hit his first home run this year and the second of his career — a one-out shot off Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. Kirk launched his fourth home run, a solo shot, on a full-count pitch from reliever Riley O'Brien for a 3-0 lead in the eighth. But in the bottom half, Willson Contreras doubled home the first St. Louis run and Iván Herrera hit a three-run homer off Yariel Rodríguez (1-0) to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead. Rodríguez, who entered with two on and two outs in a 3-0 game, had allowed just one of 13 inherited runners to score this season. Blue Jays starter José Berríos allowed two hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings. Toronto used George Springer's run-scoring double in the first and Bo Bichette's RBI single in the second to grab a 2-0 lead against starter Andres Pallente, who permitted seven hits in six innings. Key moment Berríos' exit in the seventh energized the Cardinals before Clase and Kirk came through late for the Blue Jays. Key stat The Blue Jays lead the all-time series 15-14. They won all three games against the Cardinals last season in Toronto. Up next Toronto RHP Chris Bassitt (6-3, 3.56 ERA) starts Tuesday against Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas (4-2, 3.96). ___ AP MLB:

WWE Raw results, highlights (June 9): Gunther dethrones Jey Uso, John Cena vs. CM Punk official

"WWE Raw" in Phoenix felt more like a reset than the "Raw" after WrestleMania did because the bookings were all over the place — and chief among them was a change in the World Heavyweight Champion. That's right. Jey Uso dropped the title to Gunther in their rematch to close Monday night's show. So, let's start from the end and work back to the start of this wild, loaded "WWE Raw." 🤯 Shock of the Night It really felt like Uso was going to hold the World Heavyweight title for a significant period of time, and the last person we should have expected him to lose the belt to was Gunther after the lack of build to their rematch. The "Ring General" has barely even been seen since WrestleMania 41. Yet here he is, standing tall as a two-time champion. Advertisement There will be a trilogy to this and a longer story that probably culminates at SummerSlam, because this whole feud has become about these two choking each other. That was the core — and heft of the finish — of this match. Even before it started, Michael Cole couldn't stop highlighting on commentary how Gunther specifically tapped in the WrestleMania match. Then, ultimately, Uso went unconscious in the title rematch to lose his big gold belt. I was waiting for Seth Rollins to appear mid-submission from one of these guys, as another theme of the match was Uso's ribs being injured from this past Saturday. But it never came, and that's fine. This was one of those ultra-rare moments with an overall clean match on "WWE Raw" — for a world title no less, that even changed hands. I'm not sure if it was better than the pair's collision at WrestleMania, but this was all-around good stuff. Gunther is a better champion, and hopefully, gets some good feuds brewing right away, despite my expectation of things continuing with Uso. "WWE Raw" was absolutely jam-packed with storyline development and new beginnings. The fallout from WWE Money In the Bank this past Saturday has left significant ripple effects with plenty of intrigue around them all. And to rewind to start the show, WWE got to the big one right away. 👀 Tease of the Night "WWE Raw" wasted no time getting to the truth of the matter. (Pun fully intended.) Advertisement John Cena had plenty to say about his tag team loss with Logan Paul at WWE Money In the Bank, thanks to R-Truth's surprise return. The claims from Cena were more about the fans demanding that Truth get re-signed rather than the company's internal feelings, which was a somewhat amusing way to spin it, but an expected approach. "Big Match John" wanted competition. Not a class clown. So, he got CM Punk. Punk as one of Cena's final feuds was mandatory, and I'm totally here for it. However, this was the most random possible way to throw them together. WWE seems to have completely lost any sort of direction (if there ever was one) with Cena's final run because Truth was nowhere to be seen despite this lengthy opening segment. Advertisement Let's highlight Punk specifically, though. He literally just lost his Money In the Bank qualifier match last week. And that was because of his forever rival Seth Rollins costing him. So, Punk essentially ignored that not only at Money In the Bank, but on "WWE Raw" by calling back to his history with Cena (which was nice), then challenging the champion to one final showdown — on the spot. Cena accepted, but for Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia — a specific location Punk has had colorful words for in the past, making it another nice touch. Ultimately, he accepted, albeit not through the mic. Anything between these two is good, and this was, but the timing couldn't have been more off. As the cherry on top, Rollins made his entrance to end the segment. That was it. He held out the briefcase, and the show went on. The booking of Cena's title reign has been baffling. Before "WWE Raw" ended, we did get the eventual Ron Killings appearance. 🎤 Truth of the Night R-Truth might be back, but Ron Killings is here to stay. Advertisement Killings made it abundantly clear that he was going by his real name now, as he addressed the crowd on the commentary table in his same all black outfit from WWE Money In the Bank. It was a very, very shoot style promo. Killings thanked the crowd and alluded to everything that transpired from the moment of his release tweet to now. To round out his mic time, Killings almost started to feel like a heel, calling out those who treated R-Truth as a joke before he cut his hair off and demanded respect for his name. This was a home run way to turn a negative into a positive, because I don't think the wrestling world has ever been as interested in Killings as they are right now. I know that's true for me. Hell, at this point, Killings dethroning Cena would actually be an awesome storyline of events, especially if this WWE version of Killings smashes it from here on out, which he very well could. 🏆 Bracketology of the Night WWE went from Money In the Bank season right into King and Queen of the Ring season. Advertisement In the first women's fatal 4-way quarterfinal, Roxanne Perez defeated Liv Morgan, Rhea Ripley and Kairi Sane to advance to the semifinals. Before the match started, there was more dissension boiling between Perez and Morgan, as Perez wanted to work together while Morgan told her to stay out of her way. They wound up teaming for the majority of the match and ultimately needed Raquel Rodriguez's help to stop Ripley from getting the win. Triple H will always find a way to get the interferences in. At least we didn't have to worry about disqualifications due to the match type. Perez rolled up Sane after she took out Morgan with the In-Sane Elbow, adding to the story. This was all-around solid — and typical Judgment Day shenanigans. Advertisement On the men's side, we essentially got a repeat of the WrestleMania 41 Intercontinental title match with Finn Balor replaced by Sami Zayn. It's nothing against Balor, because that match was great, but for this show, it was the... 👑 Uncrowned Gem of the Night 👑 The ending of the King of the Ring quarterfinal fatal 4-way match between Zayn, Bron Breakker, Dominick Mysterio and Penta was similar to the women's. Your powerhouse Breakker was swiftly in control until an interference, which was LA Knight hitting him with a BFT on the outside after a spear to Penta. Knight feuding with the "Sethriders" totally works for me after the tease on "WWE SmackDown," then what happened at WWE Money In the Bank. Zayn got the win with a Helluva Kick on Mysterio afterward, inching him closer to his slow-burn world title story. The match was a proper slapper, and although I'd have tweaked some of the ways it finished, you can't go wrong with any combination of these four. 🤡 Joke of the Night WWE has gotten better about carelessly spoiling surprise returns since the last Royal Rumble, as evidenced, obviously, by R-Truth, but, dude. The company just casually revealed that Asuka is going to come back as one of the members in the Queen of the Ring fatal 4-way qualifier matches. This is one of the most beloved female wrestlers of the past decade, man. They even put a mystery person in one of the men's matches. What a joke. To try and make up for it, they gave her a video package later in the night, but it's still inexcusable. With Stephanie Vaquer in the match, there's also no way Asuka wins. Frustrating stuff. 👏🤨 Return(s) of the Night We knew it was a matter of time, but this "WWE Raw" saw Bayley make her way back into the ring by attacking Becky Lynch, as the new Intercontinental Champion waited for Lyra Valkyria. Advertisement Lynch's promo was fine. She's always great on the mic, but her character's need to have Valkyria properly raise her hand is still stupid. There isn't even any good logic behind why Valkyria would have come out when Lynch called for her. Ultimately, Valkyria didn't even get a word out before Bayley appeared for the attack. That was pretty much the segment, so a fairly lackluster and rushed return, honestly. Oh, and speaking of spoilers, Nikki Bella was announced to be back in WWE at Money In the Bank. She gave the typical return, babyface promo before Morgan came out and started a feud. There was a whole lot of crammed, random booking on this "WWE Raw." They traded verbal jabs, and Morgan hit Bella with the Oblivion. Alright. It's a thing now. 👍 MONDAY NIGHT MONEY 👍 1. AJ Styles defeated a beat-up Chad Gable. It was an unsurprisingly good match, but pretty short. Hopefully, we start to see a change in Gable soon, which would presumably be after all the Grande Americano stuff is over. 2. Michael Cole and Wade Barrett are a much better duo than Cole and Pat McAfee. 👎 RAW DEAL 👎 1. Morgan's continued involvement in matches that lead to singles title opportunities just further smashes home how pointless the Women's Tag Team titles are. Just get rid of them, Triple H. You clearly don't care. Advertisement 2. The New Day are in Strugglesville, folks. Plain and simple, they need some help around them because it's the same thing over and over right now. 3. Karrion Kross staying involved with Zayn is nice, but let's start progressing Kross, yeah? Unless this is all building towards Kross costing Zayn or something, I don't know what the point is. 👑 This "WWE Raw" was an incredibly overwhelming watch, and the best word to describe it, if you couldn't tell, was "random." I give this show a Crown score of: 7.5/10. 👑

SMU Football Preview 2025: The Mustangs Are Built To Do It Again

Well that last season, SMU hadn't won a regular season game against a Power Five-now-Power-Four program against anyone by TCU since an all-time bet-on-yourself move, SMU became a part of the ACC, but without taking a dime of TV revenue until 2032. It was looking to raise the school's profile with a long-term plan, and it helped get the alumni fired up and ready to write and Cal were the higher-profile gets for the ACC, SMU was expected to be a nice scrimmage for the established programs, and then ... probably didn't belong in the expanded College Football Playoff - technically, a case could've been made for BYU instead with an 18-15 win over the Mustangs in Dallas - but let's start with this. If last year at this exact time, you were told SMU would be in the CFP discussion ... X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 SMU PreviewSMU Offense BreakdownSMU Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonSMU almost pulled off a thriller of a comeback in a 34-31 loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship, and it got its shot. In the ten years of the College Football Playoff, no two-loss Power Five/Four program would've been left out of an expanded 12-team model - it had to be done. SMU had to be what that the Mustangs were outplayed and outclassed in a blowout loss at Penn State. They made it. Everything the school could've dreamed of came true. SMU made the (bleep)ing College Football Playoff. Texas A&M hasn't done that. Neither has Baylor, Texas Tech, or Houston. Take it outside of the football-mad state - Wisconsin, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Missouri, USC, Utah, and Iowa have yet to make the last year, Penn State and Tennessee hadn't been in, it wasn't a fluke. Okay, so the ACC was fourth among the Power Four conferences by about a gajillion miles. SMU hung up 66 on TCU, walloped Florida State 42-16, took out a good Louisville squad, and in all, beat six teams that went bowling, and again, almost took out Clemson. All head coach Rhett Lashlee has done is go 22-6 over the last two seasons and 29-12 since taking the job in recruiting class was terrific, the staff kept around everyone important, crushed the transfer portal for key positions, the depth is better, and the starting 22 will be more talented than last year's schedule is tougher - Florida State will likely rebound, Miami is on the slate this time around, and good luck with those road trips to TCU and Clemson - and the team will be the hunted, but after last year, you're insane to think SMU can't do it all again.
