DMW pushes for gender equality, better opportunities for women OFWs
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is advocating for a gender-responsive approach to eliminate workplace biases and discrimination, ensuring equal opportunities and protection for women overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s push to recognize the growing role of women in nation-building and provide them with greater opportunities, confidence, and representation in society.
At the Women OFW Conference in Makati City, DMW Undersecretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay emphasized the importance of upskilling women OFWs to enhance their employment prospects both locally and abroad. She highlighted that while women dominate various industries, their contributions are often undervalued.
'Let us continue to build on the foundation of women's empowerment, independence, confidence, and hope—values that define every Filipina's strength and contribution to society,' Tutay said.
The DMW reaffirmed its commitment to expanding training programs that improve career prospects for women migrants. The conference, held as part of National Women's Month, also emphasized the need for stronger legal protections and welfare programs under the Magna Carta of Women, ensuring workplace equality, mental health support, and protection against gender-based violence.

The Philippines and the Canadian province of Nova Scotia have signed a new agreement aimed at strengthening the protection, welfare, and employment opportunities of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance labor cooperation and promote safe migration. The MOU focuses on ethical recruitment, skills development through partnerships with institutions like TESDA and PGH, and reintegration programs for returning OFWs. It also ensures lawful migration pathways, particularly in key sectors such as healthcare and construction. Minister Maguire lauded Filipino workers for their dedication and compassion. 'Filipinos are among the most hardworking and community-oriented people I've had the pleasure to work with,' he said, noting that 58% of job orders from Nova Scotia are in healthcare and construction. An initial batch of 120 candidates is covered by the agreement, with 42 job orders already in place. Nova Scotia also committed to hiring more Filipino healthcare workers in the years ahead. Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Jose Victor John Gonzaga expressed strong support for the initiative, reaffirming the DFA's commitment to protecting migrant workers and fostering global cooperation. 'We stand shoulder to shoulder with Nova Scotia and DMW as we usher in this new era of collaboration,' Gonzaga said. The signing was witnessed by key officials from DMW, OWWA, DFA, and the Canadian Embassy. It follows the Joint Declaration of Intent signed in February 2024, which laid the groundwork for the partnership. So far, over 3,000 OFWs have been deployed to Canada through private recruitment, and 151 via direct hiring.

Marcos extends condolences to India after deadly Ahmedabad plane crash
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed his deepest condolences over the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. Air India Flight AI-171 crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people onboard. At least 28 people also died on the ground near the crash site, bringing the total death toll to 269. One passenger survived and is currently receiving medical treatment. 'Filipinos are deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad,' Marcos said in a post on X. The plane was operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick and carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Marcos concluded, 'May the victims be remembered with dignity, and may the ongoing efforts to understand this tragedy bring comfort and clarity to those left behind.'
