Morocco: Ecuador Inaugurates Its Embassy in Rabat
In an address delivered during the ceremony, Mr. Bourita said the inauguration follows Ecuador's historic decision to sever all ties with the so-called 'sadr' on October 22, 2024, and to further strengthen its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco.
He highlighted that Morocco is home to 165 diplomatic missions, including 50 representations of international organizations. With 14 Latin American embassies now established in Rabat, Morocco is well-positioned to serve as a 'bridge' between Latin America and Africa, offering unique advantages—cultural, geographic, and strategic. This growing diplomatic presence, he added, reflects the importance Morocco attaches to its ties with Latin America within the framework of its foreign policy.
The emerging 'win-win' partnership between Morocco and Ecuador aims to set an example of effective and solidarity-based South-South cooperation, Mr. Bourita stressed, emphasizing that the two countries are committed to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, aspiring to build a strong and dynamic South-South partnership that serves the shared interests of their peoples.
On this occasion, Mr. Bourita also congratulated the Government of Ecuador on the appointment of an ambassador to lead its diplomatic mission in Morocco.
For her part, Sommerfeld stated that the opening of the embassy marks the beginning of a new era of dynamism in Morocco-Ecuador cooperation. She reaffirmed her country's commitment to deepening bilateral relations, strengthening ties across strategic sectors, and facilitating the exchange of expertise in various fields.
She pointed out that this is Ecuador's first diplomatic mission in the Maghreb region.
Sommerfeld added that the embassy in Rabat is intended to serve as a 'gateway to African markets' and reflects her government's determination to elevate bilateral cooperation with Morocco.
The inauguration took place following talks between Mr. Bourita and Mrs. Sommerfeld, during which the Ecuadorian foreign minister reiterated her country's support for the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco in 2007, which Ecuador views as the basis for a lasting solution to this regional dispute.

Morocco names arbitrator in mining dispute with UK firm
Amid the ongoing arbitration process between Morocco and British mining company Emmerson, the former has appointed an arbitrator at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The appointment, officially recorded by ICSID on 15 August, marks an important step forward in the dispute registered under case number ARB/25/22. The company is seeking full compensation in respect of the Khemisset Potash Project, which it had internally valued at $2.2 billion, after the project was halted. The dispute stems from Emmerson's claim that Morocco violated multiple provisions of the bilateral investment treaty between Morocco and the UK, signed in 1990 and enacted in 2002. Emmerson had previously appointed its own arbitrator whose nomination was registered on 5 August. The arbitration tribunal now awaits only the appointment of a president, who must be accepted by both parties, before proceedings can formally begin. This president will play a crucial role in directing discussions and potentially influencing the outcome of the arbitration. Located approximately 90 kilometres from Rabat, the Khemisset project represented Emmerson's primary asset. With estimated resources of 311 million tonnes at an average grade of 10.2 percent potassium oxide, the mine was expected to produce over 700,000 tonnes of potash annually for 19 years. The project was derailed following an unfavourable environmental and social impact assessment issued by the Regional Unified Investment Commission (CRUI) in October 2024. Morocco seeks US investors for gas pipeline project with Nigeria
Morocco showcased its ambitious gas pipeline project that will connect Nigeria's gas supply to Moroccan and European markets at the US-Africa Energy Forum held on 6-7 August in Texas. Morocco's presentation on this crucial international stage marks a significant step toward securing foreign backing at a key time when US investors are actively seeking to boost energy projects across Africa, Moroccan newspapers said. They said that Nawfal Drari, Director of Project Finance at Morocco's National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), the pipeline's parent-tenderer, delivered talking points covering the $25 billion initiative's progress and investment opportunities, adding that the project has reached a 'strategic phase.' Launched in 2017 the project has reached a final investment decision (FID) and a show of support from US investors could catapult that progress into an accelerated reality. 'For Morocco, the pipeline represents more than just energy infrastructure. The government views it as a catalyst for economic transformation that will create thousands of jobs and establish the North African country as a primary energy transit hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic basin.' The massive pipeline will stretch approximately 6,000 kilometres across multiple African countries, connecting Nigeria's natural gas reserves to Morocco and eventually to European markets.
