Police probe viral video of woman driving car on Penang Bridge motorcycle lane

NIBONG TEBAL: Police have launched an investigation into an elderly woman who was caught driving her car in the motorcycle lane on the Second Penang Bridge.
The incident has since gone viral on social media.
Seberang Perai Selatan district police chief Superintendent Jay January Siowou said the 70-year-old woman was identified by the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department and brought to the Seberang Perai Selatan district police headquarters for further action.
According to him, preliminary police investigations found that the incident occurred at Km 8.6 of the Second Penang Bridge, heading from Batu Kawan to Batu Maung, at 1.30pm yesterday.
"An investigation paper has been opened for the offence of using a prohibited lane.
"Police urge the public to always obey road laws and not take traffic regulations lightly, especially on high-risk routes such as bridges and designated motorcycle lanes.
"Strict action will be taken against any party found committing traffic offences that may endanger other road users, as road safety is a shared responsibility," he said in a statement posted on the Seberang Perai Selatan district police headquarters Facebook page last night.
He added that members of the public with information related to the incident are encouraged to contact the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department of the Seberang Perai Selatan district police headquarters at 04-5858222.
Earlier, a six-second video went viral on social media showing a Proton X50 being driven in the motorcycle lane on the Second Penang Bridge, officially known as the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.

TAPAH: The driver involved in an accident that claimed the lives of three senior citizens at Km328.9 of the North-South Expressway has been remanded for three days. District police chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said the 31-year-old driver was detained yesterday. "The driver will be remanded from today until April 25 to facilitate the investigation," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Yesterday, it was reported that three senior citizens were killed and three others injured in a collision involving two vehicles near the Tapah–Bidor stretch. The deceased were identified as Chong Ong, 77; Teh Kim Kai, 76; and Tan Ah Tak, 70. Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarozi Nor Ahmad said the crash involved a Toyota Vios and a Proton X50. IPOH: Three senior citizens were killed and three others injured in a collision involving two vehicles at Kilometre 328.9 of the southbound PLUS Highway near the Tapah–Bidor stretch today. Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarozi Nor Ahmad said the department received a distress call at 11.19am and deployed a team of seven firefighters to the scene. The deceased were identified as Chong Ong, 77; Teh Kim Kai, 76; and Tan Ah Tak, 70. "The crash involved a Toyota Vios and a Proton X50. One man in the Toyota Vios was injured, while five men were in the Proton X50 — two were injured and three died at the scene," he said in a statement. The injured were handed over to medical personnel, while the deceased were confirmed dead at the scene and referred to the police for further action. Tapah district police chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said initial investigations found that the Toyota Vios had rammed into the rear of the Proton X50, which was in the right lane. "The impact caused the Toyota Vios to veer off to the grassy area on the left side of the highway, while the Proton X50 spun and crashed into the left-side guardrail. "Three passengers in the Proton X50 died at the scene. Two of them were thrown from the vehicle due to the crash," he said. The driver and front passenger of the Proton X50 were injured and sent to Tapah Hospital for treatment. "The Vios driver will be brought to the Tapah magistrate's court tomorrow for a remand application," he added. Police are urging witnesses to contact Traffic Investigating Officer Inspector Mohd Faizan Ahmad @ Mohammed Razikin at 05-4011222 or 013-2087919. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

KUALA LUMPUR: A traffic policeman was injured after being hit by a motorcycle at the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) this morning. Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Jaafar @ Ismail said the 9.15am incident occurred when the 43-year-old sergeant from the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (TEID) was carrying out checks at the emergency lane at Km21.2 of the NKVE towards the Sg Buloh overhead bridge restaurant. "Preliminary investigations showed that the male motorcyclist, 37, failed to avoid the officer during the inspection, resulting in a collision. "The policeman sustained injuries to the face and head but is in stable condition. He has been sent to Sungai Buloh Hospital," he said. Shahrulnizam said the case was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other persons using the road. If found guilty, the rider can be fined between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and/or imprisoned for up to 12 months. A conviction under this section will also be recorded on the person's driver's licence.
