Ukraine gas imports increase 12 times in one month

Yahoo03-03-2025
Ukraine imported 511.8 million cubic metres of natural gas in February, the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years since September 2023. Compared to January, Ukraine's gas imports increased 12 times.
Source: ExPro data
Details: Most of the gas was imported from Slovakia – 234.4 million cubic metres, or 45.8% of all imports. In addition, 218 million cubic metres (42.6%) were imported from Hungary and 59.5 million cubic metres (11.6%) from Poland.
Most of the natural gas was imported to the "customs warehouse" of the Ukrainian UGS facilities – 401 cubic metres, of which 188.1 cubic metres were imported via short-haul service. In addition, 110.8 cubic metres were imported directly into the Ukrainian gas transmission system.
ExPro reports that the significant increase in natural gas imports in February was due to several factors, mainly the decline in Ukrainian production after the Russian attacks at the beginning of the month. In addition, cold weather persisted in Ukraine in February, which led to higher demand for natural gas.
It is forecast that imports in March may be lower than in February. In early March, Ukraine is expected to experience gradual warming, which will reduce natural gas consumption. In addition, Ukraine has gradually restored gas production facilities since the Russian attacks.
Background: Ukraine has increased its imports of electricity by almost 30% in February 2025, up to 244,000 MWh compared to January 2025.

Clean crude oil arriving at BTC Ceyhan, BP says

By Robert Harvey LONDON (Reuters) -Crude oil arriving at the BTC Ceyhan terminal in Turkey is returning to normal specifications following organic chloride contamination, BP said on Thursday, though some tanks still hold tainted oil. Organic chloride was detected in Azeri BTC crude cargoes last week, pushing price differentials to a four-year low and delaying loadings. Loadings resumed after a pause from July 20-24, with shipments now proceeding from tanks cleared of contamination, subject to testing and charterer approval, sources told Reuters. Azeri BTC loadings from Ceyhan totalled 423,000 barrels per day (bpd) in July, according to data from analytics firm Kpler, below the 561,000 bpd scheduled on the month's loading programme. On Thursday, the Suezmax tanker Nissos Antimilos was loading a 1-million-barrel cargo for Azerbaijan's state-owned Socar, a port agent's report showed. The extent of the contamination and its impact on customers remain unclear. Austria's OMV and Italy's Eni have confirmed receiving tainted cargoes. BP said it was working with Socar to manage the off-specification oil at Ceyhan but did not provide further details. A wide-scale contamination of organic chlorides in Russian Urals crude oil caused disruptions to exports in 2019. Organic chlorides are used in the oil industry to boost extraction from oilfields but must be removed before oil enters pipelines as they can damage refinery equipment. At least 5 million tonnes of the Russian crude were contaminated en route to Europe in 2019, along the Druzhba pipeline system and also affecting some seaborne exports from Ust-Luga. Russia had to use rail, storage tanks and ships to remove contaminated oil from Druzhba, while several seaborne tankers carrying contaminated Urals were still floating without homes months later as traders struggled to offload supplies. Russian pipeline operator Transneft paid out around 13.8 billion roubles ($171.92 million) in compensation payments linked to the contamination. ($1 = 80.2705 roubles)

BP, Shel, CVX: Oil Stocks Drop as OPEC Gets Set to Open Oil Taps and Boost Supply

U.S. light crude oil prices dropped more than $1 a barrel on reports of a possible increase in production by OPEC and its allies. Less Slick Stocks Brent crude futures were down 88 cents, or 1.23%, at $70.82 a barrel in early trading. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down $1.53, or 2.21%, at $67.73. BP (BP) was down 1% in early trading with Shell (SHEL) off 0.18% and Chevron (CVX) 0.33% lower. OPEC members and allies like Russia are reportedly getting close to an agreement to boost production by 548,000 barrels per day in September. It could even come as early as this Sunday, August 3 rd. More supply onto the market, coupled with continuing concerns over demand in the fragile global economy are likely to lead to lower prices. The factors which have largely driven the volatility in oil prices this year, see below, are also still present. Tariff Turmoil That largely means Trump's tariff policy. He signed an executive order yesterday imposing tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% on U.S. imports from dozens of countries and foreign territories that failed to reach trade deals by his August 1 deadline, including Canada, India and Taiwan. 'We think the resolution of trade deals to the satisfaction of the market – more or less, barring a few exceptions – has been the key driver for oil price bullishness in recent days, and further progress on trade talks with China in future could be a further confidence booster for the oil market,' said Suvro Sarkar at DBS Bank. Prices were also supported this week by Trump's threats to impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russian crude buyers as he seeks to pressure Russia into halting its war in Ukraine. This has stoked concern over potential disruption to oil trade flows and the removal of some oil from the market. 'It is not possible to completely replace Russian oil supplies in any case, which is why effective sanctions would lead to significantly higher oil prices,' said Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch.

Trump announces nuclear submarines positioned near Russia

President Trump said Friday that the U.S. is positioning two nuclear submarines in 'appropriate regions' near Russia, a move he blamed on threatening rhetoric from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who remains a top Kremlin adviser. Trump cited in a Truth Social post what he called 'highly provocative statements' from Medvedev, and said he made the submarines were 'just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.' In a rhetorical tit-for-tat this week, Trump told Medvedev in a Truth Social post on Thursday to 'watch his words,' calling Russia and India 'dead economies.' Medvedev responded with a Telegram posting referencing the Soviet doomsday plan called the 'dead hand,' in which lower-level officials could trigger a nuclear response if its leaders were taken out. On Truth Social Friday, Trump expressed hope that the matter would not escalate further, even as he repositioned nuclear assets closer to Russia. 'Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances,' he wrote. The president has threatened to institute 'severe' tariffs on Russia in recent weeks in a bid to pressure the Kremlin to halt the ongoing war in Ukraine. Earlier this week, he reduced a 50-day timeline for Russia to reach a ceasefire with Ukraine before the U.S. imposed economic sanctions, pushing the deadline to early August. Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's security council, knocked Trump on X for 'playing the ultimatum game.' 'Trump's playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10…' he wrote. 'He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn't Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don't go down the Sleepy Joe road!' Trump stepped up his rhetoric against the former Russian president, telling him to 'watch his words' in a post that also lashed out at India, which is yet to reach a trade deal with the U.S. 'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory!' the president added.
