Pune's Bhide bridge to be reopened temporarily by August 20 ahead of Ganeshotsav
The Pune Metro has announced a temporary halt in construction activities during this period. Officials said that the bridge would be closed to traffic after the festival concludes.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has stated that the Bhide Bridge connecting Shaniwar Peth to the Deccan Gymkhana area will be opened by August 20 to facilitate the movement of devotees during the festival. The immersion of Ganesh idols takes place in the artificial tanks set up alongside the river, and the parking of vehicles is also arranged in this area.
Initially, the Pune Metro closed the bridge for one and a half months, from April 20 to June 6. However, traffic restrictions continued beyond the timeframe due to construction delays.
Hemant Sonawane, executive director of Pune Metro, said, 'The Pune Metro will take a break in construction of the footover bridge and clear the Bhide bridge for use by citizens till August 20. It is not possible to complete the work before the Ganesh festival, and the work has to be resumed later on'.
Additionally, another footover cable bridge has been nearly completed over the river connecting Shaniwar Peth with Bal Gandharva Metro station, but it is yet to be opened for public use.
The two routes of Pune Metro rail are currently operational, and efforts are underway to develop additional infrastructure. The two foot overbridges being constructed by Pune Metro would enhance connectivity for residents of Shaniwar Peth, Narayan Peth, and Laxmi road to the Metro stations across the Mutha River.
Currently, motorists are using alternative routes, including the Z-bridge, Lakdi Pool, and Bal Gandharva bridge to cross over to the Mutha River.

Tejas Shinde, who works at an IT firm in Vimannagar, has been using the Metro from Nal Stop since June. "Trains run full during evening hours, and a rise in frequency would help," he told TOI. Maha Metro at present operates trains every seven minutes during peak hours, which travellers want increased to every five minutes. Priti Iyer, a frequent commuter on the Ramwadi-Civil Court route, said it is likely that the rush will increase in the coming days. She added that Maha Metro should work on two options immediately — increasing train frequency and operating trains at a higher speed to reduce travel time. "Many commuters are also looking for upgrades in feeder bus services from various Metro stations. At the moment, feeder buses run from eight to nine stations. This can easily go up to 15 stations," Iyer said. Maha Metro officials said the rise in footfall could be for many reasons other than the monsoon impetus. According to them, daily officegoers are opting for Metro services, as are a significant number of students. The existing frequency will have to go up." However, officials said Metro trains are likely to run at six-minute intervals for the festival. They added that while trials have begun to facilitate this frequency as of this month, they are looking into increasing the frequency to every five minutes at a later stage. One Metro rake sent to Patna; commuters object Maha Metro recently sent a rake from Pune for the Patna Metro. Commuters and political functionaries said this rake should have been used here to deal with increasing footfall instead of sending it away. Congress leaders expressed displeasure, calling it a political move ahead of state assembly polls in Bihar. A Maha Metro official told TOI, "A sufficient number of rakes are available here at present. An order was placed for 34 rakes, of which 33 were received. One was leased to the Patna Metro. Right now, 28 rakes are operational on two routes."

Amarnath Yatra suspended to carry out ‘maintenance of urgent nature' after heavy rain
The annual Amarnath pilgrimage to the Himalayan cave shrine in south Kashmir has been suspended, with the government taking up 'maintenance works of urgent nature' on both routes to the shrine 'following heavy rain'. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir V K Bhiduri said the annual pilgrimage, scheduled to end on August 9, has been suspended along both the Sonamarg-Baltal and Pahalgam-Chandwanri routes. 'There have been recent heavy rains in the Shri Amarnathji Yatra area on both Pahalgam and Baltal axis. Maintenance works of urgent nature are required to be carried out…,' Divisional Commissioner Bhiduri said in a statement.
