Consumer court directs bank to refund Rs 2.4 lakh lost in online fraud
NEW DELHI: A consumer court in Dehradun has instructed a private bank to refund Rs 2.4 lakh to a customer, citing the bank's inadequate
KYC verification
that enabled fraudulent withdrawal from his account in 2016.
The court also directed ICICI Bank's branch on Rajpur Road to pay Rs 25,000 in compensation and litigation costs, as per TOI reports.
Ashutosh Vijan, employed in the merchant navy, submitted a grievance to the Dehradun district consumer commission regarding fraudulent activity on his NRI account.
Earlier on March 3, 2016, he was notified via SMS of a Rs 1 lakh debit. Despite rushing to the branch, additional transactions occurred before his arrival.
Bank personnel suspended his account and began efforts to retrieve Rs 5 lakh transferred to various accounts.
Despite assurances of complete reimbursement within 30-45 days, no action materialised, and Vijan departed for his maritime duties.
Following 10 months without resolution, Vijan sought assistance from the consumer commission. He highlighted the bank's failure to verify KYC for recipient accounts and noted that four transactions amounting to Rs 5 lakh occurred within 13 minutes, violating the mandatory 30-minute interval requirement.

Drug network with Ferozepur link busted, 4 nabbed
1 2 3 Mohali: In a major breakthrough in the fight against drugs, the anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) of Mohali arrested three men with 510g of heroin along with Rs 4.83 lakh in drug money. The accused were allegedly involved in trafficking heroin from Ferozepur to Mohali for distribution in Badmajra, Balongi, and Kharar bus stand, police said on Monday. The arrested individuals have been identified as Rohit Teji, Safal Singh, and Bohad Singh. Acting on a tip-off, the ANTF intercepted the trio while they were attempting to deliver heroin to a customer. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the ANTF police station. The suspects have been remanded to two-day police custody for further investigation. During interrogation, prime accused Rohit Teji disclosed that he had sourced the heroin from Ismail alias Ghula, a resident of Ferozepur. Acting swiftly, the ANTF arrested Ismail, who was produced in the Mohali district court and also placed under two-day police remand. According to ANTF in-charge inspector Ram Darshan, Ismail functioned as a middleman, brokering heroin deals between suppliers and buyers like Teji in exchange for a commission. Police are currently searching for a fifth accomplice. Investigations revealed that the group operated on a wholesale scale, never trafficking less than half a kilogram of heroin at a time. Their established clientele included individuals in Badmajra, Balongi, and Kharar. Rohit Teji allegedly maintained direct contact with Safal Singh, a resident of Bariyali village in Mohali, who helped him identify and connect with local drug users. Police suspect that the network may have cross-border links and are probing further to determine the full extent of the racket. "This was a well-organized supply chain operating out of Ferozepur with a steady demand base in Mohali district," said inspector Darshan.

Gang rivalry leads to twin murders in Kovilpatti, nine arrested
Tuticorin: Two murders, believed to be retaliatory in nature, took place within a span of 30 minutes on Sunday night in a shocking escalation of violence at Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district. The murders sent shockwaves in the region. According to police sources, A Pragadheeswaran, 20, of Valluvar Nagar, was hacked to death near a Tasmac shop on Kadalaiyur Road. He had reportedly engaged in a heated argument with a group of men before being brutally attacked. The assailants, believed to be from a rival faction, fled the scene immediately after the murder. Less than half an hour later, a gang believed to be aligned with Pragadheeswaran retaliated by storming the residence of B Kasthuri, 50, at Shenbaga Nagar in Pudhugramam, and hacked her to death. Kasthuri, who died on the spot, was the mother of B Sathish, 22—one of the alleged attackers involved in the earlier incident. Her brother, S Shenbagaraj, who attempted to intervene, sustained injuries in the attack and was admitted to Kovilpatti govt hospital. The Kovilpatti East police rushed to both crime scenes, recovered the bodies, and sent them for postmortem. In retaliation, Kasthuri was murdered at her home. Tuticorin superintendent of police, Albert John, confirmed that nine suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the double murder. "A force of 90 police under additional SP oversaw vulnerable areas. DSP Kovilpatti and team secured four accused within minutes of the incidents. This prevented murders from escalating into a law and order concern," he added. Further investigation is underway.
