WNBA Legend Had Four Words After Unfortunate Chicago Sky News
WNBA Legend Had Four Words After Unfortunate Chicago Sky News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky fell to 2-5 during the 2025 WNBA season after Saturday night's 79 to 52 loss against the Indiana Fever. The Sky's 52 points were their lowest in a single game since the 2011 season. Advertisement After spending the first 12 seasons of her career in Chicago, five-time WNBA All-Star guard Courtney Vandersloot returned to the Sky this offseason after a two-year stint with the New York Liberty. She was averaging 12.0 points and 6.2 assists per contest through the team's first six games. Unfortunately, Vandersloot went down with an injury just under five minutes into the contest against the Fever. On Sunday, the Sky confirmed that she tore her right ACL and will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season. Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot (22).Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images 2020 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Tamika Catchings played 15 WNBA seasons for the Indiana Fever. She and Vandersloot overlapped for six seasons and developed a rivalry playing in the Eastern Conference. Advertisement On Sunday, Catchings responded to the news that Vandersloot had torn her ACL and would miss the rest of the season. She had just four words for her former 2011 WNBA All-Star teammate. "Dang… praying for you @Sloot22!!! 🙏🏽🥰," Catchings wrote. Vandersloot is a two-time WNBA champion and has been an All-WNBA honoree on five occasions in her career. She has led the league in assists seven times and is currently second on the league's all-time leaderboard for assists. She also broke the Chicago Sky's all-time scoring record on May 29 against the Dallas Wings. The Sky will have to refocus as they'll face off against the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty on Tuesday. The Liberty will carry an 8-0 record into the game and the Sky will look to avenge their 99 to 74 loss that they suffered against New York earlier in the season. Chicago Sky Make Unfortunate Announcement After Loss to Indiana Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky faced the Indiana Fever on Saturday in their second matchup of the 2025 WNBA season. Despite missing Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham, the Fever blew out the Sky once again, this time winning 79-52. Advertisement In the first quarter, Chicago lost point guard Courtney Vandersloot to a right knee injury. The two-time WNBA champion did not return. On Sunday, the Sky announced on social media that an MRI confirmed Vandersloot suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. "Courtney Vandersloot underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed a right torn anterior crucial ligament (ACL), an injury she sustained in the June 7th game against Indiana," the Sky posted. "Vandersloot will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season and undergo surgery to repair the injury. All of Skytown is behind you Sloot!" After the game, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh called it a "huge blow." Advertisement "She's our engine," Marsh said. "She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow." Vandersloot, 36, signed with Chicago as a free agent this offseason, returning from the New York Liberty on a one-year deal. She spent the first 12 seasons of her WNBA career with the Sky before playing two years in New York. Vandersloot's teammate, Hailey Van Lith, said Chicago's "hearts go out to Sloot." "It's heartbreaking to watch anybody [get hurt], but especially one of your teammates and someone that means as much as Sloot does to our team and this organization," Van Lith said. "Right now, we're giving her a lot of energy, praying for her. Whatever is in store in the future for this team, I trust that we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end. We're very concerned, and our hearts go out to Sloot." WNBA Reacts to Caitlin Clark's Actions During Chicago Sky Game
WNBA Reacts to Caitlin Clark's Actions During Chicago Sky Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Saturday, the Chicago Sky hosted the Indiana Fever at the United Center, with the Fever sittting at 3-4 on the young season, while the Sky held a 2-4 mark. Advertisement However, the biggest storyline of the game was Indiana playing without its 2024 No. 1 overall pick, Caitlin Clark, who continues to recover from a left quadriceps strain sustained in late May. Midway through the first quarter, veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell provided a spark for the short-handed Fever, sinking a signature step-back jumper over a Sky defender to put Indiana up by double digits (17-7). As Mitchell's jumper fell through the net, cameras caught Clark on the Fever bench celebrating emphatically. Moments later, the WNBA took to X to share a clip of her reaction. Clark's injury was first disclosed on May 26, when team officials announced she would miss at least two weeks following imaging that revealed a left quadriceps strain. Advertisement Without Clark, the Fever have struggled, losing two of their three last games, falling first to the 3-6 Washington Mystics before suffering a loss at home to the 2-6 Connecticut Sun. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22).Brett Davis-Imagn Images Looking ahead, Clark is scheduled for reevaluation after this weekend, with a potential return as soon as Tuesday for Indiana's Commissioner's Cup matchup against the Atlanta Dream. Should she regain full health, the Fever would welcome back their linchpin as they aim to climb back toward .500 and contend in both the Cup and regular season. Through four contests, Clark was leading the team in scoring (19.0 PPG) and assists (9.3) while also averaging 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.
