High-risk offender released from prison, expected to live in Winnipeg

CTV News14-05-2025

A convicted sex offender, who is considered high-risk to reoffend, was released from prison on Tuesday and is expected to live in Winnipeg.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), Michael Curtis Thomas, 31, has been released from Stony Mountain Institution on statutory release after serving a portion of his sentence for a conviction of aggravated sexual assault.
Police note Thomas a 'lengthy' criminal record, which includes convictions for assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and numerous breaches of probation.
In December 2021, Thomas was convicted of aggravated sexual assault, receiving a 61-month sentence.
Upon his release from prison, Thomas is expected to live in Winnipeg. He is subject to several conditions until Jan. 22, 2027, including not to consume, purchase or possess alcohol or drugs other than prescribed medication; not to have any direct or indirect contact with victims; and to follow a treatment plan to be arranged by his parole supervisor in the areas of emotions, sexual deviancy and substance abuse.
Thomas is also subject to a lifetime weapons prohibition.
Officers add that though Thomas has completed some sexual offender treatment, he is considered high-risk to re-offend in a sexually violent manner against women.
Police warn they are providing this information so the public can take appropriate protection measures. Any form of vigilante activity or unreasonable conduct directed toward Thomas will not be tolerated.
Anyone with information about Thomas is asked to contact the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at 431-489-8056. You can also call the Winnipeg Police Service, your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby A brief grenade scare temporarily shut down part of Toronto's downtown core Saturday morning, but police now confirm the suspicious object is safe. Toronto police say they responded at around 8:45 a.m. to Harold Town Park, near Church and Yonge Streets, after someone reported seeing what appeared to be an explosive. The area was quickly closed off as the Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to assess the object.
