Stony Mountain inmate, 80, dies
A Stony Mountain Institution inmate died of apparent natural causes while in custody Saturday, the Correctional Service of Canada said. Gordon Kornelson, 80, was sentenced to four years on May 5. The Carillon newspaper in Steinbach reported in April that he had pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a relative for eight years starting when she was about four years old, between Jan. 1, 2012 and Jan. 31, 2020. The abuse ended when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented her visits to Kornelson's home, the Carillon reported. The girl's mother reported the crime in June 2022 after her daughter told her what had happened. Judge Kael McKenzie granted the victim's request that there be no publication ban in the case and called the sentence low. The defence, pointing to Kornelson's declining health, had asked for his sentence to be served under house arrest. Kornelson worked as a loans manager at Steinbach Credit Union for 29 years until 1995, court documents stated, and then worked as an accountant. He served on the board of the Steinbach Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Shop from 1974 to 2019. An online obituary stated Kornelson was formerly a longtime Hanover School Division trustee and that he died in a Winnipeg hospital. DAVE BAXTER / CARILLON FILES

High-risk offender released from prison, expected to live in Winnipeg
A convicted sex offender, who is considered high-risk to reoffend, was released from prison on Tuesday and is expected to live in Winnipeg. According to the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), Michael Curtis Thomas, 31, has been released from Stony Mountain Institution on statutory release after serving a portion of his sentence for a conviction of aggravated sexual assault. Police note Thomas a 'lengthy' criminal record, which includes convictions for assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and numerous breaches of probation. In December 2021, Thomas was convicted of aggravated sexual assault, receiving a 61-month sentence. Upon his release from prison, Thomas is expected to live in Winnipeg. He is subject to several conditions until Jan. 22, 2027, including not to consume, purchase or possess alcohol or drugs other than prescribed medication; not to have any direct or indirect contact with victims; and to follow a treatment plan to be arranged by his parole supervisor in the areas of emotions, sexual deviancy and substance abuse. Thomas is also subject to a lifetime weapons prohibition. Officers add that though Thomas has completed some sexual offender treatment, he is considered high-risk to re-offend in a sexually violent manner against women. Police warn they are providing this information so the public can take appropriate protection measures. Any form of vigilante activity or unreasonable conduct directed toward Thomas will not be tolerated. Anyone with information about Thomas is asked to contact the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at 431-489-8056. You can also call the Winnipeg Police Service, your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.

Violent sex offender expected to live in Winnipeg a high risk to reoffend: police
WARNING: This story contains disturbing details. A convicted sex offender with a lengthy criminal record, including aggravated sexual assault and assault with a weapon, is expected to live in Winnipeg following his release from prison and is considered a high risk to reoffend, police say. Michael Curtis Thomas, 31, was released on a statutory release Tuesday from Stony Mountain Institution in Manitoba, after he was convicted in December 2021 of aggravated sexual assault and given a 61-month sentence, in addition to credit for his pre-sentence custody, police said in a Tuesday news release. Thomas was convicted of attacking and sexually assaulting a woman in September 2020. When she tried to run away, he caught her, dragged her and choked her unconscious before sexually assaulting her again, which was interrupted by a homeowner who witnessed the incident, police said. Thomas has a history of violence and was previously convicted of assault with a weapon after stabbing an acquaintance eight times in the back with a kitchen knife during an argument in April 2019, police said. During the attack, Thomas turned his aggression toward the victim's girlfriend and stabbed her three times. He was convicted for the stabbings in January 2020 and received a sentence of one day in jail and 18 months of probation, in addition to his nine months of pre-sentence custody. He's also been convicted of two counts of possessing a weapon, 11 breaches of probation and two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance. Police say he has completed some sexual offender treatment in the past but remains a high risk to reoffend in a violent manner against women. Thomas is under a lifetime weapons prohibition, and will be under several conditions following his release. He is required to follow a treatment plan arranged by his parole supervisor and must report all relationships or friendships involving women. Police said they provided Tuesday's community notification to ensure the public can take suitable measures to protect themselves, but warned any form of vigilante activity directed toward Thomas will not be tolerated. He is described as five feet, six inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes, and has numerous tattoos, including the words " Parris" and "Charnelle" on his face, a cross and the number 27 on his left hand, and a dollar sign on his right upper arm. Police ask anyone with information about Thomas to call the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at 431-489-8056, the Winnipeg Police Service at 204-986-6222, a local RCMP detachment or Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
