Inmate at Stony Mountain Institution dies

An inmate serving his sentence at a Manitoba prison has died.
Gordon Kornelson, 80, an inmate from Stony Mountain Institution, died of 'apparent natural causes' on June 7 according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). His death was announced on Wednesday.
CSC said Kornelson had been serving a sentence of four years for sexual assault since May 5, 2025.
His next-of-kin have been notified.
The CSC said it will review the circumstances of his death, as it does in all cases involving the death of an inmate.

Yukon RCMP report fatal car crash south of Whitehorse
Social Sharing The RCMP is responding to a fatal collision south of Whitehorse that left one dead and another injured. The collision happened near Lewes River bridge, known locally as the blue bridge. The highway is closed, and will reopen eventually to single lane traffic "shortly," police say. Sgt. Calista MacLeod said the crash happened about three kilometres south of the bridge. She said crews with the Department of Highways and Public Works are now on scene with a pilot car. MacLeod had limited information to share on the crash. Details about the people involved aren't yet known. "This is very early times in the investigation," she said. "Our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragedy." Yukoners have for years demanded that the territorial government improve road safety on and near the bridge. In 2020, a multi-vehicle crash killed Yukoner Travis Richard Adams and Nicole Sanderson. There was another crash at the bridge last year. A pickup truck hauling a trailer loaded with vehicles went into the water nearby. While one man escaped, the other, Knate Ostenso, was missing for weeks. Police later found him dead.

Police kill bear that attacked Maple Ridge woman, search ongoing for orphaned cubs

(AP Photo/Bob Hallinen) Mounties in Maple Ridge killed a bear after it attacked a woman in her backyard Thursday night, officials confirmed. According to the Ministry of Environment, the black bear swiped the victim on the side of the head. She was treated in hospital, but police described her injuries as minor. 'RCMP destroyed the suspected offending bear – a sow with two cubs,' the ministry wrote in a statement to CTV News. Conservation officers were sent to the area early Friday morning, and are still searching for the orphaned cubs on foot, in vehicles, and in the air with drones. The ministry asked anyone who sees the bear cubs to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters line at 1-877-952-7277. The Ridge Meadows RCMP sent a warning to residents about wildlife encounters in light of the bear attack, which said officers responded to 'an incident involving a resident and a bear' Thursday, but did not elaborate further. When CTV News asked police how they came to the decision to kill the bear, they wrote in a statement: 'The decision to dispatch an animal by police is always made on the basis of whether it is potentially dangerous or suffering. Given the nature of the call, including the injury sustained by the resident and the bear still posing a threat on the resident's property, officers were forced to act in the interest of public safety and make a difficult decision. We continue to work with our BC Conservation Officer Service and municipal partners to educate the public and prevent further incidents such as this involving wildlife.' Mounties also said an aggressive coyote bit a dog on Tuesday. 'While bear and coyote sightings are common in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Ridge Meadows RCMP is taking this opportunity to remind residents to stay vigilant and use precaution,' police wrote in a news release Friday. 'We all play a significant role in determining how wildlife will interact with humans. Educating yourself and your family can help prevent such encounters.' Police reminded residents to keep dogs on a leash, secure their garbage, and to never approach or feed wildlife.

Do you recognize this man? Video shows suspect in 16 break-ins across Vancouver's west side
Video provided by the Vancouver Police Department shows a suspect wanted in connection with 16 break-ins. Authorities are asking for the public's help identifying a suspect wanted in connection with 16 break-ins committed across several of Vancouver's wealthiest neighbourhoods. The Vancouver Police Department said the individual is linked to a series of thefts throughout Marpole, Kerrisdale, Arbutus Ridge, Oakridge and Shaughnessy since January. The suspect has been entering homes through unlocked doors – either early in the morning or late at night, and 'often when people are home' – then stealing cash or valuables, police said in a news release Friday. The most recent happened early Friday morning near Marguerite Street and West 41st Avenue. 'We are actively working to identify and arrest this suspect,' said Const. Tania Visintin, in a statement. 'Until we find him, we're asking people to take extra precautions and to call police immediately if you encounter him.' Authorities also released a surveillance video and several images of a suspect Friday, along with a description. The individual is believed to be an Asian man in his 30s, who normally wears a dark baseball cap, dark hooded jacket, dark pants and dark running shoes, plus a medical facemask and blue gloves. While Visintin described the thefts as 'brazen' and 'frightening,' she said no one has been injured during any of the incidents reported so far. Authorities suspect the culprit lives on Vancouver's west side, and has been walking to the targeted homes. The burglarized properties are all located between West 16th and West 70th avenues, and between Oak and Elm streets. The Vancouver Police Department said patrols have been increased in the area, as officers canvass for video and witnesses. Authorities asked anyone with information on the suspect's identity to call 604-717-0610.
