IIT-Bombay incubated spacetech startup InspeCity secures $5.6 million in seed funding

IIT Bombay-incubated spacetech startup InspeCity, which is building technology for satellite life-extension , announced it has secured a $5.6 million (about Rs XX) seed funding round, led by Ashish Kacholia and participation from Speciale Invest, Shastra VC, Antler India, DeVC, MGF-Kavachh and Anicut Capital.It aims to focus on building solutions for in-space servicing, assembly and manufacturing (ISAM) and in-space propulsion.The Mumbai-based startup said it will use the capital to continue its research and development and scale up to commercialisation. It wants to develop a fully vertically integrated platform for life-extension, with propulsion, robotics, and rendezvous, proximity operations and docking (RPOD) technologies developed under the same roof. Arindrajit Chowdhury , CEO of InspeCity and professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Bombay , told ET that it will conduct a demo mission in 2027 during which it will fly a satellite to space and test its propulsion systems 'We're targeting a global market known as ISAM. It's projected to be about $14 billion by 2030, growing strongly. We want to corner that with VEDA (Vehicle for Life Extension and De-orbiting Activities) as a global offering, and also by selling propulsion systems,' he said.Chowdhury said at the satellite level, there's been only one successful life-extension or refuelling mission so far—done by Northrop Grumman around 2020. 'Despite big investments, like NASA's multi-billion-dollar refuelling and capture mission, the technology hasn't matured to TRL-9 universally. It's still early days. There's a massive opportunity for a new player to capture this market,' he said.He believes InspeCity's development and build costs are likely to be lower than those of global competitors.The startup said while the US and Europe are important markets for spacetech, Southeast Asia and West Asia are coming up as major hubs. Last year, it signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese startup Orbital Lasers to explore laser-based solutions for removing space debris.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced that starting August 15, the government will provide 700 different public services through the Mana Mitra WhatsApp Governance platform, enabling citizens to access services without visiting government offices. During a review meeting at the Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) on Monday, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure smooth functioning of the WhatsApp-based services without technical glitches, and to launch awareness campaigns to encourage wider usage. As part of the visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated Aware 2.0, an upgraded RTGS module capable of forecasting rainfall and analysing real-time water data, including inflows into rivers, groundwater absorption, and optimal rainwater utilisation. In the meeting, Mr. Naidu issued key directives related to disease control, drone surveillance, technology-driven law enforcement, and early rainfall alerts. Take preventive measures to stop the spread of infectious diseases, with focus on achieving the zero malaria target. Use drones to identify hotspot areas, carry out rapid contamination control, and maintain continuous monitoring to deter rowdy-sheeters. Fully utilise technology to curb anti-social activities with an 'iron hand' approach. Deploy Artificial Intelligence to monitor wind quality. Predict heavy rainfall in advance and alert local irrigation associations and relevant engineers for preparedness, he said. Drone applications Mr. Naidu called for rapid expansion of drone-based services, with the Drone Corporation currently having 45 use cases ready. He emphasised deploying drones in agriculture to significantly cut pesticide usage, and in public health to control mosquito breeding and prevent disease outbreaks. The construction of a dedicated 'Drone City' should be expedited, he said. Data Lake Mr. Naidu directed RTGS to complete its Data Lake project by November and leverage Artificial Intelligence for effective analysis. He urged integration of e-crop and soil fertility data to develop district-specific recommendations that would help farmers reduce fertilizer use. Each of the 175 Assembly constituencies of the State should have a scientific analysis of development needs, he said. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, IT and RTG Secretary Bhaskar Katamneni, RTGS CEO Prakhar Jain, and Deputy CEO M. Madhuri, among others.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad's Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN) has created artificial intelligence-based software to operate driverless buses within its campus. The system is being used to transport students and faculty members between various locations inside the institute. According to TiHAN officials, the autonomous vehicle currently operates only within campus limits and not on public roads. Since its deployment, the bus has transported more than 10,000 passengers. Around 90 per cent of users have provided positive feedback, the team said. The technology relies on an array of sensors and can be adapted to different types of vehicles, ranging from electric to internal combustion engine models. The service has drawn interest from other educational institutions and the Telangana state government, which are exploring potential applications. Developers noted that the technology may be suitable for deployment at airports, large educational campuses, or industrial sites, where traffic conditions are relatively predictable. In an effort to adapt the system for Indian road conditions, TiHAN has undertaken extensive data collection. This includes trials with a specially equipped sport utility vehicle (SUV) travelling from Hyderabad to Jammu. The project, called 'Safari', covered approximately 4,000 kilometres in one direction, with the return trip bringing the total to about 8,000 kilometres. During the journey, the team passed through nearly 35 cities, gathering information on different road types, traffic patterns, and environmental conditions. The collected data is being used to train and fine-tune the autonomous navigation algorithms, with the aim of improving performance in diverse weather and traffic situations. TiHAN engineers stated that the system has been tested successfully in controlled environments, but further evaluation in uncontrolled, real-world conditions is necessary before any broader commercial roll-out can be considered. Officials involved in the project also highlighted the potential safety benefits of autonomous technology, particularly in reducing road accidents and fatalities. However, they emphasised that rigorous trials and regulatory approvals will be required before the technology can be introduced for general use beyond controlled premises.
