Siddaramaiah writes to Centre to aid mango farmers amid sharp price collapse
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote to Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivaraj Singh Chouhan to support mango farmers facing severe distress due to a sharp decline in market prices during the current harvest season. In a letter addressed to the Union Minister, Siddaramaiah drew attention to the financial crisis among mango growers across Karnataka, stating that the situation was becoming unsustainable and urged Chouhan to implement an urgent Price Deficiency Payment Scheme and Market Intervention Scheme. 'Mango is one of Karnataka's major horticultural crops, cultivated over an area of approximately 1.39 lakh hectares with estimated production of 8 to 10 lakh metric tonne this Rabi season, particularly in Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, and Bengaluru South districts,' he wrote.advertisementHe noted that prices which were earlier around Rs 12,000 per quintal have now dropped to as low as Rs 3,000 per quintal. This is significantly lower than the Karnataka State Agriculture Price Commission's recommended cost of cultivation, which stands at Rs 5,466 per quintal.
'This sharp mismatch between production costs and market realisations has placed the farming community under acute financial stress,' Siddaramaiah said. He warned that thousands of small and marginal mango growers were unable to recover their basic input costs, leading to protests and increasing anxiety within the farming community. Without immediate intervention, he cautioned, the situation could lead to serious socio-economic consequences.'In view of this grave situation, I earnestly request that immediate steps be taken to implement a Price Deficiency Payment Scheme under the Market Intervention Scheme for mangoes, as an urgent policy response,' the Chief Minister said.advertisementHe also appealed for central procurement agencies such as the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India to be directed to begin procurement operations immediately. The objective, he said, should be to ensure that farmers receive at least the minimum cost of cultivation as a safety net.Such an intervention, he added, would help stabilise market prices, prevent deepening rural distress, and protect the interests of mango farmers during this period of hardship. 'I look forward to your immediate and sympathetic consideration in the larger interest of lakhs of farmers in Karnataka,' he said. The appeal comes amid protests in Srinivasapura, a key mango-growing region in Kolar district, where farmers observed a taluk-level bandh on Wednesday. They demanded a support price for mangoes and the withdrawal of a ban imposed by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.Siddaramaiah previously also wrote to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, requesting that the state withdraw its ban on the entry of Totapuri mangoes from Karnataka into Chittoor district.

UGC gives letter of intent to five foreign universities to open campuses in Maharashtra: Fadnavis
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): The University Grants Commission has given a letter of intent to five foreign universities to establish their campuses in Maharashtra, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Chief Minister was speaking to the media after participating in the Granting of Letters of Intent (LOIs) ceremony along with Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Fadnavis said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Education Policy has opened doors for knowledge in India. 'UGC has given a letter of intent to five universities. Their campuses will be constructed in Maharashtra,' Fadnavis told reporters. The five foreign universities, which have been given a letter of intent, are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design. 'The five universities are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design... Under PM Modi, NEP has opened doors for knowledge in India,' the Chief Minister said. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO, aims to develop an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The education hub, spanning a 5-km radius, will be the first of its kind in the country, offering students access to high-quality international education within India. Meanwhile, the Roads and Traffic Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the flyover connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (Vikhroli West) to the Eastern Express Highway (Vikhroli East). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared a video of the flyover on social media and wrote that during the monsoon, citizens face traffic jams in the area, so the government has ordered that the flyover be opened for the public without waiting for an official ceremony. 'Heartiest congratulations to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation for completing the very important 615-meter bridge connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Vikhroli to the Eastern Expressway! During the monsoon season, there are often traffic jams on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, causing inconvenience to the citizens. Considering this, I, along with my colleagues Deputy Chief Minister Eknathrao Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajitdada Pawar, have decided to open this bridge for the citizens without waiting for any official ceremony and have also given orders to that effect,' the Chief Minister said. AAP-led Punjab govt, Punjab Congress, Akali Dal object to 'One Nation One Election' in meeting with JPC
CHANDIGARH: The AAP-led Punjab government, Punjab Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal registered their strong objections to the 'One Nation One Election' proposal tabled by the BJP-led central government during a meeting with members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Saturday. After attending a meeting convened by the Joint Parliamentary Committee under the chairmanship of PP Choudhary, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema described it as a direct assault on the fundamental structure and spirit of the Constitution of India as framed by Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Cheema said that he, along with AAP State President Aman Arora, completely rejected the move. "This proposal by the BJP-led Union government is a hidden agenda designed to destroy the federal structure of the nation as enshrined in the Constitution of India, meticulously architected by Baba Saheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar," he said. Referring to the amendments in the proposed Bill, Cheema said that the suggested amendments would effectively render the tenures of state assemblies subject to the discretion of the Union government, an alarming overreach incompatible with the federal framework enshrined in the Constitution. He said that this bill will further encourage the misuse of Article 356 and 360 by the Union government. As per section 5 of part 2, if the Election Commission is of the opinion that the elections to any Legislative Assembly cannot be conducted along with the general election to the House of the People, it may make a recommendation to the President, to declare by an order, that the election to that Legislative Assembly may be conducted at a later date. Citing this amendment, Cheema said that the BJP's One Nation One Election concept would ultimately backfire, as it would enable the Union government to conduct state elections at its convenience a year or two after general elections, rather than fulfilling the purpose of the proposal as being publicised.

Five foreign universities awarded LOIs to set up campuses in Maharashtra's Educity
As five foreign universities were awarded Letters of Intent (LOIs) on Saturday to set up their campuses in Maharashtra's Educity — a 250-acre facility to come up near Navi Mumbai International Airport, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that world-class global education will now become available to Indian students in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The CM was speaking at the 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City' event at Hotel Taj. The LOIs were awarded to the five foreign universities in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmedra Pradhan and officials from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which has drawn up regulatory policy for Foreign Higher Educational Institutions wanting to set up campuses in India. Pradhan said nine foreign universities have already been given permission to set up campuses in various parts of the country. And six more are in the pipeline. 'While our criteria was that all these universities are among the top 500 global ranks, most of those approved are from among the top 100 global ranks. India is becoming a destination for education and all this is made possible due to the National Education Policy NEP 2020.' Fadnavis highlighted the state government's plan to turn Mumbai into a global education hub with Educity, which will be a global education destination with infrastructure planned for 10 world-class universities. Fadnavis said five more foreign universities are to set up campuses in Educity, but their names are yet to be finalised. He added, 'Biggest benefit of this is to many youngsters from India who are not able to accomplish their dream of studying abroad due to inaccessibility or unaffordability. But now that these universities are going to be in Mumbai, Indian students will be able to accomplish their dream of foreign education with a 23-30 per cent lower cost.' Stating that this education hub aims to contribute to the growing economy of the country by providing a global workforce, Fadnavis also announced plans of setting up an innovation city in the same vicinity, which will be dedicated to encouraging the research ecosystem. 'Existence of these global universities near the innovation city will foster collaborations between academic research and industry innovations, creating the next generation of tech and other sector innovators,' he said. Reiterating how world-class education will be affordable and accessible to Indian students with foreign universities setting up campuses in India, Pradhan said, 'The entry of foreign universities will accelerate India's progress in education and development.' All these universities will enjoy full autonomy in deciding the curriculum, fees, programmes, course content, faculty recruitment among others. The affirmative reservations applicable in other higher education institutions in India will not be applicable to these universities. It will be up to the universities and their policies on whether they want to provide any scholarships. 📌 University of Aberdeen (UK): One of the oldest universities in the UK, it becomes the first Scottish university to establish a campus in India 📌 University of Western Australia (Australia): Part of Australia's prestigious Group of Eight (Go8), it will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in high-demand STEM fields — science, engineering, and industrial sectors 📌 University of York (UK): A leading research-intensive institution and a member of the Russell Group.
