Joaquin Phoenix apologises to David Letterman
The 50-year-old actor memorably appeared on the 78-year-old broadcaster's talk show in 2009 to promote Two Lovers while in character for his mockumentary I'm Still Here -for which he had publicly announced he was giving up acting to focus on a hip-hop career - and he admitted he felt "stuck" because of his commitment to the project.
Appearing on The Late Show, which is now hosted by Stephen Colbert, this week, Joaquin recalled: "It was strange, because in some ways it was a success and it was also just one of the worst nights of my life.
"As part of the promotion for a film that I had made, I was coming on the show, and so I was stuck."
Noting he had begun adopting his hip-hop persona ahead of promoting Two Lovers, he said: "I had to keep it going.
"When I came on the show with Dave, I originally did the pre-interview in character, and I realised that it was just a little silly.
"So I called them back and I said, 'Listen, this is what I'm doing. I'm coming out here and I'm doing this whole thing. I just want Dave to like lacerate me, I just want it to be really dangerous.' "
Because the Oscar-winning star was trying to draw a particular public "reaction", he felt it was "beneficial for no one to know except when needed", which led to a bizarre exchange between himself and David.
He added: "It was horrible, it was so uncomfortable, I regret it. I'll never do it again. I'm so sorry."
When Stephen noted he was unsure if David would be tuning in, his guest added: "He might be, and I just need to say I'm sorry."
After the 2009 appearance, the Eddington star returned one more time for a follow-up interview with David in 2010.
He quipped to Stephen: "I imagine they did like a major exorcism after I left."

International superstar singer Richard Marx to perform at 2025 Logies alongside Guy Sebastian
International superstar singer Richard Marx has been confirmed as one of the musical guests performing at the 65th TV WEEK Logie Awards on Sunday. The Grammy-winning American pop star will appear as a mentor on this year's season of The Voice. He will perform a medley of his greatest hits, alongside homegrown star Guy Sebastian, who will perform his new song, Get It Done. 'Australians have always been huge supporters of my music and have brought their passion and infectious energy to my live shows across the decades,' Marx said in a statement. 'It is a privilege to be performing at Aussie TV's biggest night of celebrations. I can't wait to deliver something special for those at home and in the room.' Joining the pair, and previously announced as a musical guest, is Aussie music icon Jimmy Barnes, who will also perform on the night. They join confirmed presenters, including Kitty Flanagan, Hamish Blake, Sophie Monk, Tom Gleeson, Ricki-Lee, Poh Ling Yeow and Ray Martin, and a host of other big names, who will be on hand to present the awards. The ceremony will once again be hosted by beloved comedian Sam Pang, who has helmed the show twice previously to widespread acclaim. Marx, who has been down under for several months filming The Voice, is a singer-songwriter best known for his musical ballads Right Here Waiting and Hazard — both songs reached number one in Australia. Marx has written fourteen number one hits across multiple genres – pop, rock, country, and R&B – and is one of only two artists (alongside Michael Jackson) to have scored a number one single in four different decades since his musical debut in 1987. The 65th TV WEEK Logie Awards will screen Sunday August 3 from 7pm on Seven and 7Plus.

Soundside Music Festival cancelled
Soundside Music Festival has been cancelled. The two-day event – which was set to take place at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Connecticut on September 27 and 28 with headliners The Killers, Weezer, Hozier and Vampire Weekend – has been axed, according to a brief message on its website. The message states: 'Due to circumstances beyond our control, Soundside Music Festival has been cancelled. Tickets will be refunded to the original method of payment in as little as 30 days depending on your bank's processing time.' No other information was given and there were no details on the reason for cancellation. Djo, Japanese Breakfast, the Backseat Lovers, Remi Wolf, Alex Warren and the Last Dinner Party were also on the line-up. This comes one year after Foo Fighters cancelled their planned performance at the festival in 2024 with only a few days notice, after Dave Grohl revealed he had welcomed a baby outside of his marriage. In a statement posted on Instagram, the band said: "FOO FIGHTERS WILL NO LONGER BE APPEARING AT THIS WEEKEND'S SOUNDSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL. PLEASE CHECK THE FESTIVAL WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION (sic)" The Foo Fighters didn't cite a specific reason for cancelling their planned appearance at the festival. However, it came just weeks after Dave confirmed that he had fathered a child outside of his marriage. The 56-year-old musician vowed to "regain" the trust of his family after sharing the news via social media. Dave - who has been married to Jordyn Blum since 2003 - wrote on Instagram at the time: "I've recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together."
