ECU's Birth and Bloom program partners with Fleet Feet to gift free shoes
GREENVILLE, N.C (WNCT)– The ECU Birth and Bloom Project aims to improve maternal and child health by providing education and physical activity to minorities in low-income and deserved areas. The ten-week program ends with a graduation of their cohorts, and the best part of graduation is the gifting of free shoes from Fleet Feet in Greenville.
Th ECU Kinesiology department's research is funded by North Carolina Blue Cross Blue Shield to work with community partners like Fleet Feet. After the ten-week program, expecting mothers also have a better understanding of healthier pregnancies. Linda May, a professor of kinesiology at ECU and the director of health and performance labs, says eit's all about improving overall birth outcomes.
'We really want to give kudos to Brooks as well as Fleet Feet, for giving them free shoes again to keep them active,' she said.
'Because we know that when women are active during pregnancy that we can improve birth outcomes. And that's really what we're focused on is improving outcomes and making sure that all babies are born healthy and on time.'

ECU School of Dental Medicine Professor Leads New Effort to Expand Dental Research
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — At the ECU School of Dental Medicine, one professor is piloting programs to help expand and strengthen the research happening for students and faculty. Alexandre R. Vieira spent 18 years at the University of Pittsburgh, and two years ago decided it was time for a change. 'I got to a point in my career that I thought I could contribute more. So I look for places where I probably could make a contribution and East Carolina would be a good place because the school here was relatively new. We have about 15, 18 years of the school functioning and it got to a point that now it could establish a more explicit and intensive research program,' Dr. Alexandre R. Vieira, professor and associate dean for research at ECU School of Dental Medicine said. Up North, he established a protocol where he organized clinical information from patients, and created infrastructure for future research. 'Here I would like to implement a similar protocol, but a more ambitious one, because the way a school is designed, we have our students training across the state. We have eight clinics, but this one here in Greenville, so nine clinics where the students learn dentistry and do their rotations. So we see patients with differences in their needs based on their geographic areas,' he said. He is piloting this research protocol here in Greenville, and says he wants to bring it to every clinic the ECU School of Dental Medicine has across the state. 'To be able to ask the questions to identify where the problems lie, so we can actually test the hypothesis that might be improving those problems so we can actually help North Carolinians and in the legislature to change policy so they address that properly,' he said. Onslow County to host event highlighting World Elder Abuse Day
ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — Onslow County Department of Social Services will hold an event to observe World Elder Abuse Day on June 26, 2025. The free event will take place at the Onslow County Government Center from 10am-2pm and will feature remarks from elected officials as well as a documentary screening with a question-and-answer opportunity. Jeffery Brown, Deputy Director of Social Services, says isolation that leads to financial exploitation is a big threat to the elder population alongside abuse and neglect. 'They often don't have family or friends or they're folks who are widowed recently and are just looking for some type of human contact,' Brown said. 'That's exactly what these financial criminals pray so if you know an elder person here in Onslow County, check in on them and go say hello.' N.C. Senator Michael Lazzara, District Attorney Ernie Lee, Sheriff Christopher Thomas, and Board of Commissioners Chairman Tim Foster are all expected to speak at this event. The Chowder Group, a documentary film company, will share some of their recent work and participate. This is a free event, and it will feature vendors, food, and informative discussions about elder abuse. For more information about this event, please call 910 989-3117.
