These 5 beloved TV shows were abruptly cancelled, and fans are still reeling

Hindustan Times29-04-2025

There are some popular TV shows on your favorite streaming platforms that got cancelled over the years. While some vanished without a warning, some of them entirely had it coming with reasons like poor ratings, controversies and whatnot. There are some shows that viewers begin getting hooked on to, and then they end up getting cancelled all of a sudden. Here we list some of the top TV shows that saw a sudden or a validated cancellation.
Firefly, the brainchild of Joss Whedon, failed to pull in adequate viewership ratings, ending up getting cancelled. It saw an airing of just 11 episodes after its release in September 2002. It was discontinued by December 20, 2002. Firefly is available to watch on Hulu, Amazon Video and Apple TV.
Then comes NCIS Hawai'i, that had already started becoming popular among fans of the investigative world. However, CBS later decided to cancel the show after 3 seasons, suggesting that costs and ratings were not justifiable. NCIS: Hawaiʻi was cancelled by CBS on April 26, 2024. It concluded with a two-part season finale on April 29th and May 6th, 2024. If you haven't watched this popular show, you can stream it on Amazon Video, Paramount+ or Apple TV.
Terriers, an FX show from 2010, lasted just one single season after which it did not see the light of day. According to then FX President John Landgraf, the show pulled in inadequate ratings. The show's poor marketing campaign too had a contribution in its cancellation. The show was canceled by the showmakers on December 6, 2010, after the first season. There were some serious talks about its revival, but no confirmations have been received on it yet. One can stream Terriers on Hulu, Amazon Video and Apple TV.
House of Cards remains one of the most popular shows surrounding the US political landscape. However, it faced the axe after sexual misconduct allegations against its main cast Kevin Spacey (who plays Frank Underwood) emerged. It was only a matter of a single season without him in focus that Netflix decided to pull the plug in Octover, 2017. The show's final season premiered in November, 2018, with the character, Claire Underwood, in focus. House of Cards' seasons can be streamed on Netflix, Amazon Video, and Apple TV.
Clone High's initial cancellation by MTV in mid-2003 was mostly due to its poor ratings. But, in addition to that, the show's portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi drew in a lot of backlash from viewers. Later the show was resumed after the removal of Mahatma Gandhi as a character of the show.
It then saw a revival by Max in February 2024, but was cancelled after two seasons. The second cancellation announcement came in on July 20, 2024. Clone High's episodes can be watched on Amazon Video, Apple TV and Google Play.

The actress will share the screen space with the legendary Julianne Moore. Sweeney recently made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she opened up about her ability to go from one extreme to the other while on set. When asked if she goes into her trailer to prepare and comes out in character, the actress said no and instead, 'I, like, jump in and out. It's kind of psychotic." 'Like, you're happy and fun, and then," Fallon cut in, and Sweeney finished the line, 'And then they say, 'Action!' and I'm screaming and crying. And then they call, 'Cut!' and I go, 'What's wrong?'" In the same conversation, Sydney Sweeney also shared her experience of working with Julianne Moore. Describing her as the 'most incredible human being," the actress added, 'She's so kind and fun, and just amazing to work with." When asked what it was like to 'get in those arguing scenes" with Moore, who plays her mother in the movie, Sweeney said, 'I felt so bad." She added, 'I did. 'Cause I am. I'm vicious. I'm really vicious." Apart from Sydney Sweeney and Julianne Moore, Echo Valley also features Domhnall Gleeson, Kyle McLachlan, Fiona Shaw, Edmund Donovan and Albert Jones in key roles. The film is directed by BAFTA winner Michael Pearce and written by Emmy nominee Brad Ingelsby. Sydney Sweeney calls herself ‘really vicious', says it's ‘kind of psychotic' how she jumps in character: ‘I feel bad for my co-stars'

Sydney Sweeney's not spilling Euphoria season 3 secrets just yet. Showing up on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor opened up about her new Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley, which also stars Julianne Moore. Sweeney talked about how she can snap in and out of character and described it as 'psychotic.' But Fallon wasn't letting her leave without dropping the question that's been blowing up the internet: does Cassie get married in Euphoria season 3? The upcoming season, starring Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and a lineup fans have been dying to see again, is easily one of Sweeney's most hyped projects. 'Cassie is crazy,' she said with a grin, brushing off the noise. Julianne Moore stars as her mother. The story revolves around the life of a mother-daughter duo who go to extreme lengths to protect each other after the daughter shows up on the doorstep, soaked in blood. Sydney told Fallon that shooting emotional, violent scenes with Moore was intense. 'I, like, jump in and out,' Sydney said when Jimmy asked how she prepared for the role. 'It's kind of psychotic,' she added. 'Like, you're happy and fun, and then…' Jimmy cut in, and Sydney finished the line, 'And then they say, 'Action!' and I'm screaming and crying. And then they call, 'Cut!' and I go, 'What's wrong?'' Sydney said she really respects Moore and admires her acting, but realised later just how she may have hurt her verbally during a scene where the two had to argue. 'She's so kind and fun, and just amazing to work with,' Sydney said. 'I felt so bad,' she added. 'I did. 'Cause I am. I'm vicious. I'm really vicious.' Also read: MrBeast's viral reaction to fans begging for Sydney Sweeney's bathwater soap: 'Stop asking…' While chatting, Jimmy pulled out a leaked photo of Sydney on set, dressed in a wedding gown. The blurry pic has been the talk of the town ever since it leaked from the set. Does Cassie get married? To Nate (played by Jacob Elordi)? Is that even real? Jimmy straight-up asked her. Sydney downplayed it, 'I can't confirm or deny.' With a smirk, she added, 'Who knows, that could be AI.' Jimmy laughed it off, 'No, it can't.' Though she did say that she might spill the tea 'next time' she's on the show. What we do get, though, is that Cassie's character is going to be messier and a lot crazier. 'It's the favourite version of her. She's even worse, she's even worse,' Sydney told Jimmy. In another interview with Empire, the Madame Web star revealed that Euphoria Season 3 is completely 'unhinged,' and that she pushed for it. 'I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear. She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She's flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love. It could be a sad version of love, as well.' She revealed she personally went to director Sam Levinson and said: 'Let's go crazier. He was all in.' On the personal front, Sydney reportedly ended her engagement with Jonathan Davino. They got engaged in 2022, but called it off earlier this year.
