Eddington Reviews: Pedro Pascal & Emma Stone Movie Divides Critics at Cannes
reviews are beginning to pour in after the film's premiere at Cannes, and responses to the film are polarizing for Ari Aster's latest.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has garnered a 67% score with just 12 reviews in as of now. All 12 of the reviews come from the film's premiere at Cannes, and paint a polarizing picture for what fans can expect.
Indiewire's David Ehrlich loved the film, saying it 'captures the day-to-day extent to which our digital future has stripped people of their ability to self-identify their own truths.' Likewise, Variety's Owen Gleiberman noted that the film features much of what makes Aster a 'stimulating filmmaker,' even if he indulges in himself a bit too much.
Deadline's Damon Wise praised the film's satirical take on COVID and modern times, saying that 'without ceremony or mercy, Eddington rips the Band-Aid off, and not everyone is going to want to look at, or think about, what's there underneath it.'
Not every review was popular, though. The Financial Times' Raphael Abraham said the film 'boils down to is a big-screen amplification of a billion 'WTF is going on?!' posts rather than any kind of coherent response to them.' The Times' Kevin Maher similarly said the film feels 'unsure of what it wants to say.'
Eddington stars Joaquin Phoenix, Austin Butler, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O'Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Cameron Mann, Matt Gomez Hidaka, and Amélie Hoeferle.
'A small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico,' the official synopsis for Eddington reads.
Eddington will be released in United States theaters on July 18, 2025, from A24.

Harvey Weinstein Receives Mixed Verdict, but Found Guilty of Sexual Assault in New York Retrial
The jury in Harvey Weinstein's New York retrial reached a partial mixed verdict on Wednesday, June 11, finding the disgraced former movie mogul guilty of one count of criminal sexual assault against former 'Project Runway' assistant Miriam Haley and not guilty of a separate count of criminal sexual assault against model Kaja Sokola, per reporting in the Associated Press. The jury has yet to reach a verdict on a third charge of third-degree rape against aspiring actress Jessica Mann, and is expected to resume deliberations on Thursday. The retrial of Weinstein's criminal case in New York was prompted by an April 2024 ruling from the New York Court of Appeals that deemed 'egregious errors' were made in Weinstein's 2020 trial, in which he was found guilty of assaulting Haley and committing third-degree rape against Mann. Regardless of how the New York retrial plays out, Weinstein is still serving a 16-year prison sentence following his conviction on three counts of rape and sexual assault in his 2022 Los Angeles trial. As the jury deliberated on Monday, the foreperson approached Judge Curtis Farber to discuss a private matter, per the AP. The judge later explained that the juror did not want to return to the deliberation room. 'He said words to the effect of 'I can't go back in there with the other jurors,'' the judge said, adding that the juror was being pressured to change his position by other jurors. 'He did indicate that at least one other juror made comments to the effect of 'I'll meet you outside one day,' and there's yelling and screaming.'Weinstein's lawyers saw the situation as cause to ask for a mistrial, with defense attorney Arthur Aidala saying 'I don't think the court is protecting this juror. Period.' But prosecutor Matthew Colangelo pushed back, saying that tense conversations are standard procedure during trials. 'He said he'd made up his mind, he didn't want to change it, and people were pressuring him to change it. That's what jury deliberations involve,' Colangelo said. But the trial continued, and the jury began Wednesday by re-hearing Mann's testimony about Weinstein's alleged rape in 2013. Sabrina Carpenter gets cheeky as she announces new album, ‘Man's Best Friend'
Sabrina Carpenter sure has been a 'Busy Woman.' Just a year after releasing 'Short n' Sweet,' the 'Espresso' singer has another album on the way. Carpenter took to Instagram Wednesday morning to announce 'Man's Best Friend,' due Aug. 29, along with its sultry (and divisive) cover art featuring the singer on all fours in front of a man pulling her hair. She also posted a close-up image of a dog whose collar is emblazoned with the album title, highlighting the cheeky play on words. Carpenter gave fans a taste of the new project last week with 'Manchild,' a twangy synth-pop track that sees the singer questioning, 'Why so sexy if so dumb? / And how survive the Earth so long?' Written with Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff shortly after finishing 'Short n' Sweet,' the single has been compared to her songs '15 Minutes' and 'Busy Woman,' released earlier this year. 'It sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer,' Carpenter said of 'Manchild' on Instagram. 'Hence why i wanted to give it to you now- so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!' 'Manchild' is accompanied by a playful music video that shows the singer hitchhiking with various incompetent men and bathing with pigs in her bra and underwear. Fans have also been quick to point out that the dog in the video may be the same as the one in the album announcement. While not much else is known about the album, Carpenter sifted through ABBA, Donna Summer and Dolly Parton records during an Instagram Live Wednesday morning, hinting at her possible influences, according to Variety. The singer notably covered the Weather Girls' '80s hit 'It's Raining Men' during her headlining set at Primavera Sound Barcelona last weekend, where she also performed 'Manchild' live for the first time. This fall, Carpenter is set to return to North America for another leg of her Short n' Sweet Tour, finishing with six nights at Los Angeles' Arena on Nov. 16, 17, 19, 20, 22 and 23. Perhaps fans can expect some new additions to the setlist.
