US, Thai, Canadian navies in gulf drills

Bangkok Post07-07-2025
The United States Navy (USN), Royal Thai Navy (RTN), and Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) have joined forces for the 31st annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (Carat) Thailand maritime exercise, which began on Monday in Sattahip district, Chon Buri.
The US embassy said the drill, which runs through July 18, is designed to enhance regional security cooperation, strengthen maritime partnerships, and improve interoperability among allied navies in the Indo-Pacific region.
This year's at-sea operations will feature anti-submarine warfare drills, air defence, and surface action group coordination, as well as mine countermeasures and search-and-rescue training.
Participating vessels include the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Santa Barbara, alongside three RTN warships -- HTMS Naresuan, HTMS Saiburi, and HTMS Rattanakosin.
The shore phase of Carat Thailand will involve professional exchanges on topics such as maritime domain awareness, medicine, and explosive ordnance disposal. Cultural and community events are also planned, including a joint sports day, public performances by US and Thai navy bands, and volunteer service activities.
Approximately 1,000 naval personnel from the three countries are participating in the exercise, which takes place in the upper Gulf of Thailand.
Capt Matt Scarlett, head of the US delegation, emphasised the value of both operational training and people-to-people engagement: "From joint exercises at sea to community events ashore, Carat strengthens our bonds of friendship and improves our ability to address shared maritime challenges."

How Coinbase, Robinhood and Circle will come out on top of unusual crypto rally

Coinbase, Robinhood and Circle will come out on top as crypto heads into an unusually long bull run. That's according to wealth management firm Bernstein, whose analysts estimate that not only will Bitcoin hit $200,000 over the next 12 months, but that this crypto rally will outlast usual four-year cycles. 'We believe we are in the middle of a digital assets revolution,' Gautam Chhugani and three other Bernstein analysts wrote in a Tuesday note to investors. The key driver behind the rally? The Trump administration's goal to transform 'the US into the crypto capital of the world.' Under President Donald Trump, the US government has rubberstamped new stablecoin rules into law with more crypto bills waiting in the wings, appointed industry-allies into key government positions, seen regulators halt actions against crypto companies, and paved the path towards integrating blockchain projects with traditional finance. The Federal Reserve is also widely expected to cut interest rates in September, which is seen as a boon to crypto markets as lower rates tend to intensify investor appetite for risk-on assets like cryptocurrencies. Bernstein's optimism also comes as Bitcoin surged to a new record trading at over $124,000 on last week. Altcoins like XRP and BNB also notched new records recently while Ethereum has edged towards all-time highs. Robinhood Bernstein gave Robinhood stock the sharpest upgrade with its price target raised to $160. That would put it make worth almost 40% more than today. The trading platform's 'diversified services model offers crypto upside without the volatility,' the analysts said. Robinhood is among a wave of fintech companies that have muscled into crypto services over the past few years. It has ramped up those efforts in 2025. For instance, in June its CEO Vlad Tenev unveiled a rollout of its crypto services across the European Union, tokenised stocks, and launched crypto staking services in the US. Apart from benefitting from the market upswing, Bernstein said Robinhood will also grow thanks to it broadening its services to include banking and wealth management. Coinbase Leading public crypto exchange Coinbase will also benefit from the rally driving up trading volumes in the second half of 2025, Bernstein said. It gave Coinbase a price target of $510, an almost 60% increase from its current price. Coinbase revenues will climb from $6.6 billion in 2024 to $14.1 billion in 2027, driven by trading volume, derivative market growth and US market dominance, according to Bernstein estimates. Coinbase will also benefit from its partnerships with the likes of JPMorgan, eToro, and Revolut, the analysts said. Circle Stablecoin issuer Circle's successful initial public offering in June is seen as one of the key signals that the crypto industry is climbing towards new heights. Bernstein said Circle''s USDC stablecoin will be a key winner from this rally. Its supply will grow by 260%to $220 billion by 2027, according to Bernstein estimates. 'USDC is positioned to capture a significant share of the $4 trillion digital dollar market,' the report said, adding that Circle is best placed to turn stablecoins into the primary money-rail of the internet. Crypto market movers Bitcoin is up 0.4% over the past 24 hours to trade at $115,530. Ethereum is up 0.4% to trade at $4,306. What we're reading Bitcoin at $140,000? America's home equity tax was only meant for the rich — how US seniors are getting hurt

A growing number of homeowners are now subject to capital gains taxes on home equity — a tax that once primarily affected the ultra-wealthy. Under current IRS rules, individuals can exclude up to $250,000 in capital gains tax from the sale of a primary residence, while married couples filing jointly can exclude up to $500,000. Shop Top Mortgage Rates Personalized rates in minutes A quicker path to financial freedom Your Path to Homeownership These exclusion limits were set in 1997, when far fewer homeowners saw gains of this size. Since then, home values have increased significantly, but the thresholds have not been adjusted for inflation. As a result, more homeowners, particularly retirees and long-term owners, are exceeding the exemption limits and facing tax bills that were once rare. This has reignited debate over the fairness of the policy. Understanding how capital gains tax is calculated — and how it may affect your finances and the broader market — is essential. Don't miss Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 6 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Want an extra $1,300,000 when you retire? Dave Ramsey says this 7-step plan 'works every single time' to kill debt, get rich in America — and that 'anyone' can do it Understanding home equity taxes If you own assets like property, stocks, or cryptocurrency, you're likely familiar with how capital gains taxes work. But homeowners who have lived in their primary residence for at least two of the last five years before selling receive a special tax break. This break applies to the profit from the sale — not the full sale price. For example, if you and your partner bought a home for $250,000 and later sold it for $750,000, your capital gain would be $500,000. As a married couple filing jointly, that entire amount would be excluded from capital gains tax under current IRS rules. That's a whopping 200% gain, completely tax-free. Given that the median U.S. home sale price is $410,800, according to data from the Federal Reserve, many middle-class homeowners still fall under the exemption limits. However, the sharp rise in home prices over the past 30 years means more owners are now exceeding those limits and facing unexpected tax bills. According to data from home values have increased approximately 260% since 1997 — a trend that has particularly affected older homeowners who've held onto their properties for decades. In response, some lawmakers have proposed updating the exemption threshold. Read more: Nervous about the stock market? Gain potential quarterly income through this $1B private real estate fund — even if you're not a millionaire. Time for a change? Some lawmakers are already pushing to eliminate capital gains taxes on home sales. In July, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced the No Tax on Home Sales Act, which would exempt all primary residences from capital gains taxes, regardless of the size of the gain. President Donald Trump, a billionaire real estate investor, has voiced his support for the bill. However, an analysis by the Yale Budget Lab using Federal Reserve data found that 'only a small fraction of homeowners would benefit' from eliminating the tax. As of 2022, only about 10% of U.S. households had capital gains exceeding the current exemption limits. The National Association of Realtors estimates the figure at 15%. The average net worth of this cohort is $5.7 million, according to Yale Budget Lab. In other words, while the tax initially targeted the ultra-wealthy in 1997, today it primarily affects upper-income homeowners. If you're among them, there are still ways to reduce your exposure. What can you do? Even wealthy homeowners with sizable capital gains on their primary residence can reduce their potential tax liability. For example, if you're married, filing jointly allows you to claim the full $500,000 exemption on the home you share. If you're engaged, it may be worth waiting to sell until after you get married and can file jointly. It's also important to calculate your capital gains accurately. The IRS allows you to include the cost of capital improvements — such as replacing the roof, upgrading the HVAC system, or remodeling bathrooms — in your home's adjusted cost basis. This reduces the taxable gain when you sell. Be sure to keep all receipts and documentation related to these improvements.
