An inquest has been unable to confirm why a 78-year-old man entered the river in which he drowned. Keith Williams was found dead on February 11 last year in the Taff Bargoed river in Treharris, Merthyr Tydfil county.

Pontypridd Coroners' Court heard the retired mechanical fitter had been reported missing at 3.07am the previous day by his family.

Coroner Kerrie Burge said: "Keith had suffered with physical health concerns and associated low mood for many years and had been supported by the community mental health team.

"There was a medication overdose on August 3, 2023, but since then Keith had consistently expressed regret and had denied any suicidal thoughts.
"Discussions with professionals between December 2023 and February 2024 did not identify any current concerns about self-harm.

"Sadly Keith was found deceased in Taff Bargoed river on February 11, 2024."
Ms Burge recorded a narrative conclusion that Mr Williams died by drowning but that the circumstances in which he entered the water and his intentions at the time "could not be ascertained".
The court heard Mr Williams was married and that he lived in Treharris at the time of his death.

Coney Beach: Terrified parent describes horror as rollercoaster derails at theme park

Children were among the 14 people injured at Coney Beach Pleasure Park in Porthcawl, south Wales after a popular rollercoaster - the Wacky Worm ride - malfunctioned A panicked mum told how she saw children "screaming and covered in blood" after a rollercoaster derailed at a theme park on Wednesday. ‌ Rebecca Eccleston heard a "massive bang" before a metal railing smashed into her pram with one-year-old son Theo inside. It left her baby with bruises to his face. Further children suffered other injuries too, including severe cuts. ‌ The Wacky Worm ride derailed at Coney Beach Pleasure Park in Porthcawl, south Wales, derailed and it is said a metail railing fell onto Rebecca's pram. Guests were seen climbing off the rollercoaster - described by the attraction as "the perfect first thrill ride for the kids" - while others were helped down with a ladder. ‌ Rebecca, 22, said: "It was all fine and the kids were enjoying themselves then all of a sudden there was a massive bang. I turned and the metal railing had fallen on to my right shoulder and my pram. All the kids were screaming and covered in blood, including my best mate's boy." South Wales Police said 13 children and one adult suffered minor injuries while some needed hospital treatment. Coney Beach Pleasure Park has issued an apology, stating it was "a third-party ride" and an investigation has been launched. The attraction was closed on Thursday but is expected to reopen today. The one-day closure has done little to calm other parents, who watched the horror unfold on Wednesday. Matthew Baker's children were among those injured. The 44-year-old dad, who travelled with his family from Port Talbot, south Wales, said: "My four-year-old had a busted lip - there was a lot of blood - and he has bruises on his body. "My 15-year-old hurt her left knee, and my 13-year-old daughter, who was sitting behind them, hit her chin so hard her jaw is swollen and she's badly bruised around the ribs... Beyond the physical injuries, all three of them are really shaken up." 'I took my daughter on her favourite safari day out, but I made a big mistake' Coney Beach Amusement Park said: "Due to an incident on a third-party ride not owned by Coney Beach, we were instructed by the police to clear the site for further investigation. "We apologise for the disruption and will be providing refunds to affected guests as soon as possible. We will be releasing instructions on refunds shortly. We thank you for your cooperation." South Wales Police conducted an investigation at the theme park on Thursday, a probe set to continue. It confirmed 14 people suffered minor injuries but is yet to comment further on the incident.

Death row killer gouges out both his own eyes and eats them in bid to avoid execution

Death row killer gouges out both his own eyes and eats them in bid to avoid execution Andre Thomas, 39, was sentenced to death in 2005 for the murders of his estranged wife and her two children. His execution was postponed after he gouged out his eyes The father removed the hearts of his kids (Image: Harold Democrat) A man sentenced to death for the brutal murder of his wife and children, in a horrific act of self-mutilation, gouged out both of his eyes and ate them in an attempt to avoid execution. Andre Thomas was handed the death sentence in 2005, but his execution was delayed after he removed his own eyeballs. He was discovered in his cell, covered in blood, prior to his court appearance in 2004, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. In another shocking incident, Thomas gouged out his remaining eye and consumed it, leaving him completely blind. His legal team stated that he believed this act of self-harm would prevent the government from hearing his thoughts. The news comes as police hunt a killer on the run as family of 'horrific' Welsh murder victim say they are 'terrified'. The 39 year old is currently incarcerated in Texas for a triple murder to which he has confessed. He admitted to killing his estranged wife, Laura Christine Boren, their four year old son, and Boren's 13-month-old daughter. Thomas told authorities that he believed God had instructed him to commit the murders, claiming he thought his victims were demons. He also removed the hearts of both children, as reported by the Associated Press, reports the Mirror. Thomas gouged out his remaining eye and consumed it (Image: Texas Execution) Article continues below He was found guilty in 2005 and automatically received the death penalty. His execution is scheduled for 5 April 2023. Jason Clark, an agency spokesperson, confirmed: "Thomas said he pulled out his eye and subsequently ingested it." In March 2023, Judge Jim Fallon granted an order suspending Thomas' execution warrant, following a request from his legal team for extra time to assess his mental condition and determine whether he met the competency requirements for capital punishment. According to the Supreme Court, whilst the death penalty isn't prohibited for individuals with serious mental disorders, it mandates that a person must be deemed competent. Marie Levin, Thomas' solicitor, stated: "We are confident that when we present the evidence of Mr. Thomas's incompetence, the court will agree that executing him would violate the Constitution. Andre Thomas before and after each of his self-inflicted attacks (Image: AP) "Guiding this blind psychotic man to the gurney for execution offends our sense of humanity and serves no legitimate purpose." Levin described Thomas as "one of the most mentally ill prisoners in Texas history ... not competent to be executed, lacking a rational understanding of the state's reason for his execution." After consuming his first eyeball, Thomas received treatment at a medical facility before being moved to a prison psychiatric unit. His trial barrister, Bobbie Peterson-Cate, remarked that he would "finally be able to receive the mental health care that we had wanted and begged for from day 1." In March 2023, over 100 faith leaders and others issued a plea for mercy to halt his execution. However, J. Kerye Ashmore from the Grayson County District Attorney's Office, who prosecuted the case, stated they knew "nothing about the case" and had not read any reports or evaluations concerning his mental state.
