Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said the White House has scored important wins during Friday's summit with Russian President
Vladimir Putin
in Alaska, even though President
Donald Trump
did not get the ceasefire he had pushed for.
Witkoff told CNN on Sunday that the most significant outcome was the agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine, described as 'Article 5-like protections,' which he called 'game-changing.'
'We didn't think that we were anywhere close to agreeing to Article Five protection from the United States in legislative enshrinement within the Russian Federation, not to go after any other territory when the peace deal is codified,' Witkoff said.
He added that United States and other European nations reached an agreement to provide Article 5-like security guarantees.
Ahead of the Alaska meeting, Trump had issued warnings about consequences if Russia did not commit to a ceasefire. Despite the high-profile summit, which included a red carpet welcome for Putin, no concrete plans for a follow-up meeting were established, as reported by Politico.
Despite an inconclusive summit, Witkoff had expressed his optimism.

He said the discussions marked the first time the US has seen meaningful accommodation from Russia, more than during previous administrations. He emphasized the need to build on this progress.
Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
will visit Washington on Monday to meet with Trump, accompanied by several European leaders. Trump has signaled willingness to contribute to security guarantees for Kyiv in a final settlement to help deter future Russian aggression.
Trump's former Vice President
Mike Pence
called Witkoff's account of the proposed security guarantees 'encouraging,' but warned the White House to keep in mind that Putin remains the main threat in the conflict.
'I served alongside the president for four years. I know his style in dealing with these dictators,' Pence said. 'It's the velvet glove. But I think the hammer needs to come and it needs to come immediately.'

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi To Arrive In India Today For Key Talks With EAM Jaishankar, NSA Doval Amid Trump Tariffs

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will begin his two-day visit to India on Monday, where he will hold a crucial bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar. However, the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit also assumes significance in view of increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, which included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian oil. India and China are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border during Wang Yi's visit, which comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's China trip later this month. The Chinese Foreign Minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. Wang Yi will be in India primarily to hold a fresh round of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Wang and Doval are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks. The Chinese Foreign Minister will arrive in New Delhi at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday. At 6 p.m., he will meet EAM Jaishankar for bilateral discussions. On Tuesday morning, Wang Yi is scheduled to hold a new round of the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue with NSA Doval at 11 a.m. The meetings could see both sides deliberate on a range of key issues, including the border situation, trade and resumption of flight services. The Chinese Minister will then call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting assumes significance as it is taking place days before PM Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. As per the plan, Prime Minister Modi will visit Japan around August 29 and then travel to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. NSA Doval travelled to China in December last year and held the SR talks with Wang Yi, weeks after Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in bilateral ties. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan on October 23, 2024. The two sides also initiated several initiatives to rebuild ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi restarting the issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Both sides are also discussing modalities to resume direct flight services between the two countries. The flight services between the two sides were suspended following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It was not restored in view of the border row. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar visited China in the last two months to attend the SCO meetings.

Zelensky arrives in US for Trump talks, wants war to end 'quickly and reliably'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington DC on Sunday (local time) to meet US President Donald Trump, saying he desires to end the war with Russia 'quickly and reliably.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with President Trump at the White House.(AP) Taking to X he said, 'I have already arrived in Washington, tomorrow I am meeting with President Trump. Tomorrow we are also speaking with European leaders. I am grateful to @POTUS for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given so called 'security guarantees' in 1994, but they didn't work. Of course, Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022. Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence. Now, our soldiers have successes in Donetsk and Sumy regions. I am confident that we will defend Ukraine, effectively guarantee security, and that our people will always be grateful to President Trump, everyone in America, and every partner and ally for their support and invaluable assistance. Russia must end this war, which it itself started. And I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia into a real peace. Thank you!' ‘First time we heard' Putin agree on NATO-style protection for Ukraine: Trump envoy

Washington and its European allies could offer Ukraine a NATO-style security guarantee as part of a potential peace deal, a US official said Sunday. Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, who attended Saturday's Alaska talks, told CNN that it was 'the first time we had ever heard the Russians agree to that' and called the move 'game-changing.' He said Moscow signalled openness to US-led 'Article 5-like protection' for Ukraine, though details on how it would work remain unclear. Article 5 is the core of NATO's defence pact, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. Putin has long opposed Ukraine's bid to join NATO. The possible shift is a significant step towards discussions at the White House happening today as per IST, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will join Trump and European leaders. Trump hailed 'BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA' in a post on Truth Social, but later suggested Kyiv would need to make compromises. 'President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to… NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!' he wrote. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also attended the Alaska summit, said the shape of any guarantee was still under discussion. 'How that's constructed, what we call it, how it's built… that's what we'll be talking about over the next few days with our partners,' he told NBC. He stressed that while progress was made, 'we're still a long ways off' from a peace agreement. Witkoff added that Russia had also agreed in principle to a law pledging not to seize more European territory or violate neighbours' sovereignty. European leaders cautiously welcomed the development. Trump's team defended his decision not to push for an immediate ceasefire. Witkoff said so much ground was covered in Alaska that the administration is now aiming for a broader peace agreement. Rubio told ABC News that no truce could have been reached on Saturday because Ukraine was not present. He added that while consequences await if no deal emerges, the priority is avoiding escalation. The thorniest question remains territorial concessions. According to European officials, Putin reiterated his demand for Ukraine to cede the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the Donbas. Witkoff said Moscow prefers boundaries based on legal demarcations rather than shifting front lines. He suggested the issue would feature prominently in Monday's talks. Zelenskyy, however, has rejected giving up territory. In Brussels, he said the 'contact line is the best line for talking' and pointed to Ukraine's constitution, which he said makes it 'impossible to give up territory or trade land.'
