Teddy Bridgewater set to return to the NFL with Buccaneers to back up Baker Mayfield
Article content Teddy Bridgewater is nearing a return to the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Article content Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said Bridgewater is visiting the team and the Bucs plan to sign him. Article content Bridgewater coached his former high school in Miami to a Class 3A state championship last fall and then returned to the NFL in late December to serve as a backup to Jared Goff for the playoff-bound Lions. The Buccaneers also have veteran Kyle Trask, who has thrown 11 passes in four seasons since he was a second-round pick in 2021. Article content Bridgewater said last month that he was suspended from coaching Miami Northwestern High School because he provided players with financial benefits that he says he reported to the school. 'And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem.' Article content Bridgewater, a first-round pick by Minnesota in 2014, is 33-32 as a starter and made the Pro Bowl after his second season when he led the Vikings to an 11-5 record. He also spent time with the Jets, Saints, Panthers, Broncos and Dolphins. Driver attempting to set land-speed record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats dies
Article content A driver going 455 km/h trying to set a land speed record during a racing event at Utah's famed Bonneville Salt Flats died Sunday after he lost control of his rocket-like vehicle called the Speed Demon, organizers said. Article content Driver Chris Raschke lost control about two and a half miles into a run and was treated by medical professionals at the scene, but died from his injuries, according to the Southern California Timing Association, which has organized the popular land-speed racing event known as 'Speed Week' since the late 1940s. Article content Article content Article content For decades, the flat, glasslike white surface has drawn drivers from all over seeking to set new land speed world records and motorcycle and car fans to watch. A remnant of a prehistoric lakebed, the salt flats that are about 160 kilometers west of Salt Lake City have also been a backdrop for movies like Independence Day and The World's Fastest Indian. Article content 'Motorsports is inherently a dangerous sport,' said Dennis Sullivan, a car builder and racer who set a land speed record in his 1927 Model T street roadster and serves as president of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association. 'People get hurt. People get killed. That's just the nature of the sport. It doesn't happen a lot.' Article content Sullivan said motor sports also have stringent safety requirements — such as stronger roll bars, special tires and more fire extinguishers — that help protect drivers. Article content The last racing death Sullivan recalled at the flats came in 2016 when Sam Wheeler, a renowned land speed motorcycle racer, crashed at 200 mph (321 kilometers) when the high-performance bike he was testing fish-tailed and went airborne. Article content Article content The Bonneville Salt Flats, which had its first race in 1914, have about 10 km for racing and an aquifer underneath that cools the tires of the cars. Article content It's unlike other race venues in that it doesn't have stands. Spectators must stand two-tenths of a mile away from the cars. Raschke lost control of the vehicle about two and a half miles into a run. Article content It's unknown what speed Raschke was aiming to reach. The association and the Tooele County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death, said Sgt. Dane Lerdahl, a spokesman for the law enforcement agency. Article content 'We know it was an accident of some sort,' Lerdahl said. Article content For decades, people have used the flat, glasslike surface at Bonneville Salt Flats to set speed records, sometimes topping 644 km/h. Speed Week has long been a draw for motorcycle and car fans. Article content Raschke, 60, was the driver of a streamliner — a long, narrow, aerodynamic car made to run at high speeds — known as the Speed Demon. He had worked in motor sports for more than four decades.

WDRA Canadian Nationals celebrates 25 years at Grand Bend Motorplex
Drag racing fans packed the Grand Bend Motorplex over the Civic Holiday weekend to celebrate the 25th WDRA Canadian Nationals. 'Hat's off to them, they've got a clean, beautiful facility and the racetrack is like second to none,' said London's Paul Noakes, who runs a Nostalgia Funny Car and has raced since the inaugural event. 'They just know how to bring in the right cars and the right amount of people. The parking lot was full and the grandstand was full for first night of qualifying. I couldn't believe how many people were actually here.' Immaculate weather drew approximately 10,000 people to the track to see the Pro Mod, Top Sportsman/Dragster, Nostalgia Nitro Funny, and Alcohol funny cars, as well as the Jet Truck. 'It's a phenomenal facility. We were here for like, the very first time it reopened back in the mid 90s. Ran our alcohol funny car here. And then over the years, coming back with the fuel dragster and all that. It's just, there's a lot of racing history here. There's been a lot of big moments here.' One of those came during the first ever Canadian Nationals. Clay Millican taking on Shirley Muldowney in the Championship final. 'It seems like yesterday and Paul (Spriet, track owner) had to remind me who I ran in the final and what the results were,' said Muldowney, 85, who was acting as Grand Marshal Saturday in Grand Bend. 'The area is beautiful, and it makes me kind of want to leave the States sometimes,' she told CTV News. 'I used to kind of come through this area, on my way to New York to sneak through Ontario. I love Canada. I got to spend two months at the Montreal General Hospital, and that's some time I'll never forget. The Canadians treated me royally.' That hospital trip was in 1984 after her car veered off the track at 250 mph due to front-tire failure at the Molson Grand Nationals. She suffered broken legs and required multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy. Muldowney said, 'Once you've been to a live event, you can't stay away.' Whether its attending races with your family members or racing with them like Noakes. His daughter Brooklyn runs in the Top Dragster series locally and the NHRA Super Comp class. His father Brian attends the races by their side. 'My dad's now involved with me with the race car and my daughter gets to play with that car now a full time, so we just love it as a family,' said Noakes. 'My father's been driving me on getting a car again, so we wanted to go the Nostalgia route rather than the Alcohol (Funny Car). We wanted to get back in a little slower pace and have fun. It's a little less maintenance involved but we at least go fast.'
