Melamoon Launches in Toronto: Fueling Black Entrepreneurs with Capital, Culture, and Community

Cision Canada17-07-2025
A Two-Day Experience
TORONTO, July 17, 2025 /CNW/ - Melamoon is not just a pitch competition—it's a National blueprint for what's possible when Black ambition is met with real investment, ecosystem support, and cultural intention. Taking place September 26–27, 2025 at the Globe and Mail Centre, Melamoon is set to redefine how Black founders are seen, funded, and supported in Canada.
Powered by the FACE Coalition —Canada's national catalyst for wealth creation for Canadians of African descent—and Black Ambition, a US-based nonprofit organization working to find, fund and fuel underrepresented entrepreneurs, Melamoon marks a major step forward in building long-term infrastructure for Black innovation.
Rooted in Intention and Impact
So Ambitious Dinner | Sept 26
Black Brilliance, Bold and Unapologetic Ambition
An invite-only evening for 120 funders and founders, including 50 top applicants, featuring a curated dinner with cross-sector leaders, investors, and cultural changemakers. The night will include a dynamic fireside discussion, with intentional moments of storytelling, connection, and celebration.
Melamoon Pitch | Sept 27
When Capital Meets Culture, Bold Ideas Take Flight
Six finalists will pitch live for a chance to win one of four prizes totaling $200,000 —including $100K, $50K, $25K, and a $25K People's Choice Award. But this is more than a competition—it's a launchpad. Founders will receive virtual workshop support leading up to the pitch and be introduced to a growing network of funders, mentors, and allies. A headline keynote speaker will anchor the event, reinforcing the connection between Black creativity, commerce, and community. Best of all, no equity is taken—this is non-dilutive capital designed to fuel.
Program Highlights
Holistic Founder Support – Finalists gain access to virtual programming, coaching, and resources ahead of demo day
Ecosystem Connectivity – Curated networking moments across both days with funders, partners, and peer founders
Special Guest Keynotes – Featured speakers at both the So Ambitious Dinner and Melamoon Pitch
Cultural and Strategic Alignment – Designed to amplify not just business ideas, but the voices and visions behind them
No Equity. No Catch. Just Fuel.

100 Days to 8th CIIE: Preps Harden as Global Exhibitors Eye Business Potential in China Français

SHANGHAI, /CNW/ -- Facing the complex international landscape and mounting challenges, China International Import Expo (CIIE) consistently acts as a platform for global business exchange. With only 100 days to go, the 8 th CIIE is set to take place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10. As of now, over 50 countries and international organizations have confirmed their participation in the Country Pavilion. Sweden and the United Arab Emirates will serve as guest countries of honor at the 8 th CIIE, while Kyrgyzstan will make its debut. To help global enterprises across sectors better integrate into the Chinese market, the Corporate Pavilion features six major exhibition areas—encompassing Medical Equipment and Healthcare Products, Automobile and Smart Mobility, Intelligent Industry & Information Technology, Consumer Goods, Food and Agriculture Products, and Trade in Services—and will continue hosting its Innovation Incubation Special Section. Driven by strong interest and participation from overseas companies, total booked exhibition space has surpassed 330,000 square meters, with 170 companies and 26 institutions becoming eight-time full-attendance exhibitors. Notably, this year's Corporate Pavilion introduces four fresh innovations, demonstrating its vibrant energy and vast collaboration opportunities for participants. A special section for the least-developed countries products will launch alongside an upgraded Africa products section, helping 53 diplomatic African partners leverage zero-tariff treatment to enter the Chinese market. A new section for overseas provinces and cities stands as another highlight. Focused on global premieres, a dedicated trail for exploring debuts and a section amplifying exhibitors' presence are introduced. A cross-border e-commerce platform will be established for specialized promotion, matching, and livestreaming. The 8 th Hongqiao International Economic Forum (HQF) will convene under the theme "Opening-up for New Opportunities, Cooperation for a Shared Future". Alongside the release of the World Openness Report 2025 and the latest World Openness Index, the HQF will host over 20 parallel sessions on revitalizing multilateral cooperation, empowering digital intelligence, green and sustainable development, and a more open China. Side events will retain previous categories, while people-to-people exchange activities will add a new "Charming Friends of City" zone, inviting international friendly provinces and cities to set up their booths.

There is a way to increase housing supply. Does Gregor Robertson have the will?

Gregor Robertson has a task before him that must seem impossible: simultaneously double housing starts while ensuring that those newly built homes are affordable to the middle class. And if that weren't enough, the federal housing minister also has to convince Canadians that families will be able to purchase those homes and that investors will not gobble them all up. The only path to increasing the housing supply and lowering prices is to reduce costs associated with construction, including the cost of land. The government can continue to make federal land available for homebuilding, but it should also ensure that existing land is used as efficiently as possible. Through the Housing Accelerator Fund, the federal government has signed agreements with municipalities to implement policies that legalize density, such as those pertaining to the construction of multiplexes. Future infrastructure and housing deals must go further to allow as-of-right construction, and the federal government should actually enforce the deals it has signed; it can't afford to pay Toronto $30 million to legalize sixplexes citywide only for the city not to live up to its obligation.
