Despite a recent cancellation for Hulu comedy series How to Die Alone, the celebrations will not stop for creator and star Nathasa Rothwell. The series followed Mel (Rothwell) a Black, plus-size and perpetually broke JFK Airport employee who's never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental death scare challenges her to ignite her passions.
Rothwell, who won the Independent Spirit Award for Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series, spoke to Deadline ahead of the event on the Indie Spirits red carpet about the challenge of finding a new home for the series.

Spirit Award 'Anora' Director Winner Sean Baker: "Indie Film Is Struggling More Than Ever"
'Right now in Hollywood, there's a DEI purge of programs, positions and projects,' she said. 'And I feel it's unfortunate that How to Die Alone was not able to survive that. It was worthy by all merits. It was a critical success and we had the numbers and more importantly, we were centering marginalized voices. We had representation on the stage. And that representation is being honored tonight. So it's exciting to see the show get that recognition in spite of the circumstances.'

In addition to the Indie Spirit win, the show also received two nominations at the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Directing for a Comedy Series. Rothwell went on to talk about the importance of being Black and having resilience in the cutthroat industry. 'Nothing quite prepares you for these particular types of shenanigans than being a Black woman that walks through this world,' the writer-actor said. 'Fairness is not something that we're as familiar with in a lot of areas. So being disappointed, those are experiences that I've felt before, but none at this magnitude. I'm grateful for the Black love and support of people who've shown up and held me up in encouragement. It's just confidence in knowing that the work speaks for itself. And although its journey is not what I had anticipated, it exists and people can find it and the message will live on forever.'
RELATED:
Rothwell's next project will see her team up with TikTok's Tareasa 'Reesa Teesa,' who went viral for sharing her true story about the wild dissolution of her marriage in a 50-part video series that ranged from five to 10 minutes long. 'I have so much stuff in store. That's the other silver lining when you're in a writer's room and in production for a TV show, your bandwidth is narrowed. So for the time being, I am able to entertain a lot of other projects.'

‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' Season 2 Reunion Announced

God (Hulu) has answered my prayers (angry demands). We're getting a Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 2 reunion. And the first look photos are already causing drama. Hulu announced the reunion on Thursday, June 5, less than a month after season 2 premiered. 'After a shocking end to season 2, host Nick Viall reunites all of #MomTok and #DadTok to uncover secrets and scandals, never-before-seen footage, and a surprise announcement in the first-ever reunion special for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,' reads the press release. But who is 'all of #MomTok'? Based on the first look photos teasing the reunion, it looks like Taylor Frankie Paul, Jen Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Taylor, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Matthews, Whitney Leavitt, and Miranda McWhorter will all be in attendance. As for their group nemesis Demi Engemann, she's nowhere in sight. Could this mean she's done with the show for good? Demi's absence shouldn't come as a huge shock. She stormed out of a #MomTok meeting in the season 2 finale after failing to kick Taylor out of the group, saying she needed a break. But is Demi really done with #MomTok, or could she return? Before you read too much into her absence, it's important to note that Whitney, who last we saw was newly voted back into #MomTok, is taking part in the reunion, as is Miranda, who has yet to be voted on at all. So it looks like despite her #MomTok status, Demi made a conscious choice to skip the event. Read into that what you will... Meanwhile, most of the #MomTok husbands and/or partners will also be participating. A sneak peek at the reunion shows six of the #DadTok members sitting in chairs behind the main cast, including Taylor's ex Dakota Mortensen, Mayci's husband Jacob Neely, Mikayla's husband Jace Terry, Jen's husband Zac Affleck, Whitney's husband Conner Leavitt, and Jessi's husband Jordan Ngatikaura. (That's one way to put those Jessi cheating rumors to bed!) Finally, the show will be hosted by Bachelor alum Nick Viall, who has had most of the cast on his podcast, The Viall Files. The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 2 reunion will air July 1 on Hulu. I will be seated.

Mikey Madison in Talks to Replace Sydney Sweeney in A24 Edgar Allen Poe Drama THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH — GeekTyrant

Best Actress Oscar winner Mikey Madison ( Anora ) is in talks to replace Sydney Sweeney in A24's feature adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque of the Red Death . No official deal is done yet. The film is being billed as a 'wildly revisionist' take on the short story from filmmaker Charlie Polinger. Madison will reportedly portray twin sisters in a world where a mad prince (Prince Prospero in the original 1842 short story) welcomes wealthy elites into his castle as plague spreads across the land. The long-lost twin, who lives among the lower class, enters the castle in what is an atmosphere of drugs, sex and game of thrones as Prospero throws a masquerade ball in seven rooms, each decorated with a different color. In the original short, a mysterious figure enters the castle disguised as a Red Death victim. Prospero dies after confronting the stranger, along with many other guests. Sweeney reportedly stepped back due to scheduling conflicts. She is currently in production on Season 3 of HBO's Euphoria and Legendary's feature take of Japanese IP Gundam this fall. Polinger is currently in post on his next film The Plague , which was made independently and stars Joel Edgerton. Madison is also attached to Reptilia , the latest movie from filmmaker Alejandro Landes Echavarría. The film will co-star Kirsten Dunst and is based on a script by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman. Masque of the Red Death will shoot in either Q4 of this year or Q1 2026. via: Deadline

Watch: 'Man in My Basement' teaser shows Willem Dafoe move in

1 of 5 | Willem Dafoe stars in the upcoming film "The Man in My Basement." File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 5 (UPI) -- Hulu is previewing The Man in My Basement, starring Corey Hawkins and Willem Dafoe. The thriller film is based on the novel by Walter Mosley, who co-wrote the screenplay with director Nadia Latif. The trailer released Thursday begins with a loud knock at the door that awakens Charles Blakey (Hawkins). Anniston Bennet (Dafoe) stands on the doorstep of the home, located in 1994 Sag Harbor, New York. "I have it in mind to rent your basement for a couple months," Bennet says, emphasizing that he is "only interested in renting." "I'll pay you $1,000 a day for 65 days," he proposes. The money would enable Blakey to keep his home, which had been in his family a long time and was facing foreclosure. Bennet's arrival, however, brings "in a force much darker than" Blakey anticipated. "We're exploring mental health, trauma, exploitation, and yes, the nature of evil, but we're also dealing with legacy, lineage, home and love," Hawkins told Entertainment Weekly. "A script centered on blackness in middle-class Sag Harbor in the '90s is loaded with cultural significance." An official release date has not yet been shared.
