Motherwell 1, Rangers 1: Longelo the hero for Motherwell as he rescues a point

Jens Berthel Askou's Premiership reign started with a draw against Rangers
Emmanuel Longelo was Motherwell's hero as boss Jens Berthel Askou's Premiership campaign started with a draw against Rangers at Fir Park.

James Tavernier's first-half header was cancelled out in the dying stages by Longelo's strike.

The Ibrox side could be forgiven for having an eye on Tuesday's Champions League qualifier against Viktoria Plzen.

Tavernier headed Rangers into the lead in 14 minutes, and it looked like Rangers might build on that, but instead they fell away from the game.
They were made to pay for that as Motherwell bagged a late leveller.
The game started at a frantic pace, with Motherwell not letting Rangers settle on the ball, but the visitors also advancing at pace, but the game died away midway through..

James Tavernier saw a 19-yard free kick well saved inside five minutes, and Djeidi Gassama looked lively,
Emmanuel Longelo and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos both went close for Motherwell in the same move.
Motherwell stepped it up in the second half and should have levelled through Elijah Just five minutes in, and the hosts created several decent chances to score.

Motherwell boss Askou kept faith with the side that drew against Hertha Berlin, and beat Morton in their final Premier Sports Cup group stages game. Aston Oxborough again gets the nod on the bench.
Rangers manager Russell Martin made one change to the side that progressed against Panathinaikos in the Champions League second qualifying round, as Djeidi Gassama replaces Findlay Curtis.

Gassama was sent flying by Lukas Fadinger just outside the box in five minutes, with Tavernier lining up the free kick, but Calum Ward made a brilliant save to push it over the top left corner.
A terrific Rangers move then ended with Gassama sending a first-time shot curling round the right post from eight yards out in nine minutes.
Motherwell went close in 10 minutes when Johnny Koutroumbis' cross from the right was stabbed goalwards by defender Nasser Djiga, but keeper Jack Butland was alert to it and saved his blushes.

Danilo had a snap-shot out of nothing that bounced off the top of the bar from just inside the box in 13 minutes, as Rangers searched for an opening.
But Rangers got the opener in 14 minutes when Joe Rothwell's corner was headed in at the back post by Tavernier.

Motherwell went close in 23 minutes when Watt sent Longelo racing through on the left and his shot was well parried by Butland, who also blocked Stamatelopoulos' follow-up.
Slattery picked out Longelo on the left side of the box in 40 minutes, but his chip flew high and wide of the right post.

Tawanda Maswanhise's cross from the right was just missed by Just with a diving header in 41 minutes.
Kieran Dowell's cross from the right was headed at the back post by Gassama in 47 minutes, but was comfortably held by Ward.
Three minutes later, Longelo's left wing free kick made its way to Stamatelopoulos on the right side of the box, but he fired high and wide.

Slattery's free kick from wide on the left was headed just over by Just at the back post in 50 minutes.
Midfielder Slattery was in the mood and sent Stamatelopoulos through on goal in 53 minutes, but Djjiga did just enough to block the Australian's shot.

The unlikely figure of Paul McGinn nearly got on the score-sheet in 56 minutes, forcing a fine diving save from Butland, with the Rangers defence hacking the rebound to safety before anybody in claret and amber could pounce.
Stamatelopoulos then picked out Maswanhise on the right corner of the box, but he sent his angled shot flying past the far post in 57 minutes.
At the other end, John Souttar went on a run down the left, but his angled shot was well held by Ward in 63 minutes.

Rothwell's corner on the left was bounced out the box, but only as far as Cameron, who let fly with a low shot that was well held by Ward in 69 minutes.
Just's deep cross from the left was headed just over at the back post by Stamatelopoulos in 70 minutes, as Motherwell tried to get back level.
Slattery tried his luck from distance, but sent his angled shot past the left post.

But Motherwell bagged a leveller in 87 minutes when Longelo smashed in a low shot.
Tom Sparrow could have won it for Motherwell in the dying stages but saw his shot well saved by Butland.
MOTHERWELL: Ward, Koutroumbis, McGinn, Gordon (O'Donnell, 71), Longelo, Watt, Slattery (Sparrow, 90+1), Fadinger, Maswanhise, Just (Balmer, 90+1), Stamatelopoulos (Said, 80)

Subs (not used): Oxborough (GK), Halliday, Wilson, Whyte, Ross

Tuesday's briefing: Alexander Isak back in Toon as Liverpool parade new signings

Alexander Isak is facing showdown talks with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe after returning to Tyneside. The 25-year-old Sweden international headed back to Tyneside over the weekend after spending time working on his fitness at former club Real Sociedad. Isak missed the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia having cited a thigh injury amid fevered speculation over his future. Newcastle swiftly rejected a £110million bid for the player from Liverpool last week. 'You have to earn the right to train with us,' said Howe before the team flew home from Seoul. 'No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Established stars Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo scored the goals as Liverpool showcased £270million-worth of new signings in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday. Record recruit Florian Wirtz hit the bar in an eye-catching display while fellow new faces Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike also featured for the Premier League champions. Ekitike set up the opener for Salah, who also missed a penalty, and Gakpo struck twice. It was the second of two games against the Basque outfit, with a largely second-string Reds side earlier winning 4-1. Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players linked with moves, were on target along with teenagers Rio Ngumoha and Ben Doak. Tributes were paid to forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, in both games. Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has signed a new three-year contract. The 49-year-old Frenchman was appointed in June 2024 and guided the Black Cats back to the Premier League after an eight-year absence in his first season. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: 'I'm delighted we are announcing this contract extension for Regis. 'It provides clarity going into the Premier League season, but more importantly it recognises his contribution and continued commitment to the club.' Russell Martin claims his criticism of some of the Rangers squad following their deflating 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Saturday came from a position of 'love and care'. The Gers boss hit out following the William Hill Premiership opener at Fir Park, questioning mentality, speaking about 'egos' and accusing some of 'self-preservation'. 'I think if they know us by now as a group of coaches that it all comes from a place of love and care for them,' said the Gers boss. Brighton owner Tony Bloom has set his sights on winning the SPL with Hearts after investing in the Edinburgh club. The English entrepreneur completed a £9.86million deal in June to secure a 29 per cent stake in the Jambos in non-voting shares. Bloom said: 'If we have not won the league title in the next 10 years, I will be very disappointed.' Rangers are in action again as they host Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of a Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Lyall Cameron happy with Rangers 'under the radar' status as he reflects on humble beginnings

The youngster made his Gers bow in the weekend draw with Motherwell at Fir Park He wasn't even a Russell Martin signing. ‌ And when fans go through the list of summer arrivals at Ibrox, his name is usually the one they forget about. But Lyall Cameron plans to change all that. ‌ The 22-year-old was plucked from Dundee on a Bosman, having agreed a pre-contract deal at Rangers while ex-gaffer Philippe Clement was still in charge. ‌ He was first in the door during pre-season before new boss Martin got to work in revamping the squad. The manager has now brought in nine players, with £4 million Finnish winger Oliver Antman the latest to be unveiled on Monday. There was no fanfare or big transfer fee when Cameron got his obligatory scarf picture taken at Auchenhowie. But that's not to say the midfielder won't have a big impact under Martin this season. In fact, after coming off the bench at Motherwell on Saturday he earned praise from his gaffer. Cameron was picked out by Martin as showing the required attitude to be a Rangers player - while slating others for lacking in that department. And that might just have opened a door for the Scot to force his way into the line-up for Tuesday night's Champions League qualifying first-leg tie against Viktoria Plzen. It would be an incredible feat for Cameron, given where he's come from. A few years ago he was on loan at Montrose and Peterhead but now he's set to shine on the European stage. Humble and unassuming, Cameron has no ego. And he might just be what Martin is looking for. Ahead of the Czechs' visit to Ibrox, he said: 'Do I like going under the radar? Yeah, definitely. ‌ 'Look, I was never going to be a massive signing for Rangers, coming from a small club like Dundee. But I know what I can bring and hopefully I can implement that and do as well as possible. 'I'm definitely ready to start on Tuesday, you always need to feel ready. You have to be confident in your own ability and I've always said I am. 'If I get to start, I'd be delighted but it's all about the team getting through, that's all that matters. If I play, hopefully I can help the team win. ‌ 'I knew Rangers were a massive club which plays in massive games before I came here. But it has probably surprised me just how quickly they come around. 'A few weeks ago, we were playing a pre-season game and now we're straight into Champions League qualifiers. But I'm really enjoying the challenge and hoping to contribute as much as I can.' ‌ Cameron was brought to Ibrox to create and score goals from midfield. In terms of grafting for the team and giving everything on the pitch - that's been a prerequisite for a guy who was a stand-out at Dens Park last season. He was delighted to please his manager at Fir Park but disappointed with the result. Cameron said: 'It was great to hear and it gives you real confidence to get backing from your manager. 'But the overall feeling was of disappointment on Saturday because I want to come into a team that's winning. To draw wasn't good enough and we understand how critical it's been since then. ‌ 'The fans weren't happy and that's expected because we need to win games. We know Saturday wasn't good enough. But the reaction has been good. 'The boys have trained really well and we now turn our focus on to another big game on Tuesday night. Everyone is looking forward to that challenge. 'We all understand the criticism was justified on Saturday because it wasn't good enough. The expectation here is to win every game and we didn't do that. ‌ 'Rangers now haven't won on the first day of the season for three seasons - so that has to improve. We understand the response from the manager but we need to show that it will motivate us to do better in the future. 'From my point of view, that's what I try to do anyway - give 100 percent as a footballer, no matter what's going on. I always work as hard as I can, that's just a given for me. 'It was a bad start on Saturday but we can recover quickly on Tuesday night.' ‌ Cameron knew he was never going to walk straight into the Rangers' first-team when he signed for the club. And he's honest enough to admit it's a whole new ball game at Ibrox, compared to being at Dundee. But if he gets the nod from Martin to start in Gers' engine room in Europe, he's ready to grab the opportunity. Cameron said: 'It would be brilliant to play on Tuesday because it's a huge fixture. ‌ 'We did really well to get past Panathinaikos which was such a difficult tie. We have a chance to go through in the competition and to play my part in that would be great. 'The step-up for me has been different. It's a different world through here compared to what I've been used to. Every game is so much bigger, in terms of the pressure. 'But I just take everything that comes. I don't get too involved in anything, I keep myself out of it. 'I'll just give 100 percent and do the best I can. That's all I can do.'
