Bigger isn't always better — at least that's what Casey's is betting on for the time being.
The big picture: Gas station companies nationwide are building bigger stores to encourage customers to stay and browse, especially as more electric vehicles hit the roads.
State of play: During a Q&A with reporters this month, Casey's CEO Darren Rebelez noted that while EV customers stay at the gas station to charge for 30 minutes — most return to their cars after making their purchases inside.
"If we see a trend where people want to spend more time in the actual store, then we'll have the ability to accommodate that," Rebelez said. "But from what we've seen so far, they prefer to actually spend the time in the car."
By the numbers: Casey's is already larger than the average gas station because of its kitchen, Rebelez said. The average size of a store is 2,500 to 4,000 square feet, per CSP.
Meanwhile, Sheetz on the east coast is expanding its stores, averaging 7,000 square feet and adding drive-thrus, the New York Times reports.
QuikTrip, which is expanding in the Midwest, averages 7,000 square feet.
Buc-ee's, the southern gas station, has locations as big as 75,000 square feet.

The Atto 2, which launched earlier this year in Europe and China (as Yuan Up), was officially unveiled in Hong Kong on Friday—providing potential customers with a strong value proposition. BYD captures 30% of Hong Kong's EV market, leaves Tesla trailing Featuring BYD's proprietary blade battery packs, the Atto 2 offers a range of up to 254 miles on a single charge—more than necessary for typical daily commutes. The battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 38 minutes, ensuring convenient fast charging for city drivers. Though priced lower than many competitors, the Atto 2 comes equipped with an intelligent cockpit featuring voice controls and smartphone connectivity. The model's design is expected to primarily appeal to drivers aged between 25 and 45. Since launching the comparatively larger Atto 3 in Hong Kong in 2022, BYD has sold 170,000 electric vehicles, capturing around 30% of the city's EV market. From January to June this year, BYD's best-selling model was the Sealion 07, a fully electric midsize SUV. The company's vehicles also accounted for 27% of the total 18,356 private EV registrations in Hong Kong during the first half of this year, surpassing Tesla which earlier held a market share of 47% from August 2017 to July 2024. The Chinese automaker's sales manager Xueliang expressed optimism about the evolving EV market in the city, emphasizing the need for all car brands to deliver excellent service in a bid to help consumers feel confident while making the switch to EVs. Tesla sales drop sharply in Europe while BYD gains momentum BYD is rapidly gaining ground against Tesla and other automakers in key international markets. While Tesla's sales have fallen sharply in Europe's largest markets, BYD is experiencing strong growth. In Germany, Tesla sold only 1,110 vehicles last month, a 55% drop compared to same time last year. Total sales were down 58% for the year through July. Meanwhile, BYD's sales have surged by a whopping 390% over the same period, signaling a significant shift in market dynamics, Electrek reports. A notable shift is underway in the UK as well, as Tesla's sales fell nearly 60% in July, with only 987 vehicles sold compared to nearly 2,500 in July 2024. Meanwhile, BYD's sales surged to 3,184 vehicles, more than quadrupling from the previous year. BYD's upcoming 3,000 hp Yangwang U9 ‘Track Edition' leaves all electric supercars behind

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed that EV giant BYD is all set release a Track Edition of its Yangwang U9 2-door coupe electric supercar. This new variant will effectively triple the U9's already impressive performance to a mighty 3,019 hp (2,251 kW). For reference, 'Track Editions' of cars typically feature changes to body design for better aerodynamics and added downforce, but also often feature bigger brakes. The current Yangwang U9 uses four motors to provide around 1,300 hp (970 kW). However, BYD seems to have upgraded this with new 555 kW motors at each of the four wheels for its planned new edition, according to details filed with China's MIIT. That much power makes the new U9 more powerful than any current production electric hypercar. In fact, it surpasses other supercars like the Lotus Evija (1,972 hp) and Rimac Nevera (1,914 hp) by a large margin. Balancing old with the new Weighing 5,467 pounds (2,480 kg), the Yangwang U9 Track Edition will only be about 441 pounds (200 kg) heavier than the Rimac Nevera, which has much less power. The new U9 will measure between 16.3 feet (4.97 meters) and 16.37 feet (4.99 meters) in length, and 6.6 feet (2 meters) in width. It will likely also be between 4.3 feet (1.311 meters) and 4.43 feet (1.351 meters) in height, with a 9.51 feet (2.9 meters) wheelbase. According to reports, the U9 Track Edition will mostly retain the built design of the existing base model, featuring a glossy red and black exterior, 20-inch wheels with 325/35 R20 tyres, carbon-fibre roof, a large fixed carbon-fibre rear wing and a range of aerodynamic options. Meanwhile, the current U9 model uses an 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate BYD Blade battery, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 280 miles (450 km). Other features include a 500 kW DC fast-charging capability, enabling a 30% to 80% state-of-charge in about 10 minutes. The Yangwang U9's suspension is BYD's 'DiSus-X' system, capable of extreme moves like hopping over potholes or driving on three wheels. Perfecting an already impressive car Although additional specifications of the upcoming Track Edition can be gleamed from the existing base model, a good number of details are missing from the MIIT filing. While the current U9 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0–100 kph) in 2.36 seconds, the Track Edition could potentially rival or beat the Nürburgring lap record for road-legal cars, currently held by Mercedes-AMG One. The base model has already achieved a lap time of 7 minutes and 17.9 seconds in November 2024 at Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife. For reference, the top speed for the old model is already clocked at 243.5 mph (391.94 kph). The upgraded U9 might most likely race faster but details are yet to be made public. There is also no mention of a price tag, but the existing base model will set you back about $233,411 (1.68 million Yuan). From the filing it appears that the upcoming variant is not just a 'track package' U9 with spoilers. Instead, it promises to be a massively updated electric hypercar, which could challenge the fastest petrol-powered cars in history while also showcasing how extreme Chinese EV engineering has become. Amid what can only be described as a rollercoaster of a year for Tesla, the electric vehicle maker confirmed a gargantuan pay package for CEO Elon Musk, the company said in a post on X. Once an unshakeable titan in the rapidly surging EV sector, Tesla's been contending with sustained headwinds throughout 2025. Musk's controversial involvement in sweeping cuts to a broad swath of popular federal programs like USAID caused a tremendous amount of anti-Tesla backlash and ensuing stock volatility. Sales faltered, and some of Musk's most vocal supporters feared the damage was "irreversible." By itself, fallout from Musk's activities appeared to do significant damage to Tesla's previously beloved brand — but it wasn't the only challenge the automaker faced. Compounding innovations in EV technology introduced a level of competition from up-and-coming, rival electric vehicle makers. China's BYD was catching up to Tesla by early 2024, and newer brands only stood to gain market share as Tesla flailed. As the Associated Press indicated, Tesla's stock value dipped 25% this year, and "profits plunged from $1.39 billion to $409 million" in the most recent quarter. However, on Monday, August 4, Tesla issued a letter to shareholders announcing Musk's compensation package and some caveats attached to it. The company awarded Musk "96 million restricted shares of stock" valued at roughly $29 billion, according to CBS News. Tesla published a copy of the letter to X, which began by saying Musk had "not received meaningful compensation for eight years," and that the award was "recommended … as a first step, 'good faith' payment to Elon" by members of Tesla's Board of Directors. "Rewarding Elon for what he has done and continues to do for Tesla is the right thing to do," the letter stated, citing an ongoing legal tug-of-war around Musk's compensation. Directly thereafter, an emphasized heading asserted that "retaining Elon [was] more important than ever before." Musk was referred to as "Elon" throughout the letter, which also held that "losing Elon would not only mean the loss of his talents but also the loss of a leader who is a magnet for hiring and retaining talent at Tesla." Ultimately, the Board assured fretting shareholders that the multibillion-dollar package would be sufficient to keep "Elon's energies focused on Tesla" and would require him to remain "continuously in a senior leadership role" for a two-year period. The price of Tesla shares rose 2% on Monday, possibly reflecting a modest swing in investor sentiment.
