Four Bills to be tabled

The Star5 days ago
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state assembly sitting scheduled for two days starting today will see the tabling of four Bills covering supplementary supply, state sales tax, forestry, as well as climate change and carbon governance.
'We normally have at least three sittings a year, so (this time) there's more attention because if the state assembly dissolves after this, it will be the final sitting of the term,' said Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M. Yahya (pic).
'If not, it will be the third sitting this year. Nothing out of the ordinary this time, just a regular sitting.'
He added that the sitting will also be broadcast live on social media, including YouTube, to enable the public to follow debates, especially those concerning state policies, without needing to attend in person.
'I think it's better for people to watch it because our focus is solely on the debates. There are many benefits to live broadcasts,' he said, adding that the live telecast also encourages assemblymen to maintain decorum and proper conduct during proceedings, and ensures quality debates as they are aware they are being observed.
'If I were an assemblyman, I'd also be more disciplined, knowing that I'm being followed live by the public.
'The good thing is, the coverage will be wider since not everyone can come to the assembly,' he said.
He also said that the Sabah state assembly building is gazetted as a security zone, and, therefore, certain restrictions must be adhered to in the surrounding area to avoid it becoming an uncomfortable environment for official matters.
'It's not that we're stopping people from coming, but we don't want the state assembly to feel like a convention centre with crowds swarming around.
'Since the area is already gazetted as a security zone, there are limits - please observe them,' he said.
Asked about the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Kadzim said they have not yet been able to fully utilise the technology due to some limitations, especially language translation.
'If one day AI can be used for legislative sittings, we could use it to assist in our work, including producing the Hansard and so forth,' he added.
Kadzim also confirmed that the 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 if it is not dissolved earlier.
He said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th state assembly, which was Nov 12, 2020, thus making Nov 11 the end of the five-year term.
He said that there was some misunderstanding regarding the date of the automatic dissolution, with some assuming the term starts on the polling day of the 16th Sabah state election (Sept 26, 2020) or on Sept 22, which was the date for early voting.
'Some count from polling day, others think it starts from the date the elected representatives were sworn in (Oct 9, 2020).
'It is not counted from the polling day, the announcement of the election results or the swearing-in of assemblymen.
'It is counted from the date of the first sitting of the new legislative term,' he said, Bernama reported.
Kadzim said if the state assembly dissolves automatically on Nov 11, Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman and the Election Commission will be formally notified.
'An election for the state must then be held within 60 days from the date of dissolution,' he added.

Pakistan court suspends YouTube ban order on govt critics

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court on Friday suspended an order seeking to ban the YouTube channels of more than two dozen critics of the government including former Prime Minister Imran Khan, a defence lawyer said. Alphabet-owned YouTube this week told 27 content creators that it could block their channels - including those of journalists and Khan and his opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf - if they failed to comply with a judicial magistrate court order seeking to ban them. A regional communication manager for YouTube did not respond to a Reuters request for a comment. The judicial magistrate court in Islamabad had said it was seeking the ban after the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency criticised the channels in a June 2 report for 'sharing highly intimidating, provocative and derogatory contents against state institutions and officials of the state of Pakistan.' The decision to suspend the order was taken by an additional sessions judge, said Imaan Mazari, the lawyer for two of the YouTube content creators. In Pakistan, an additional sessions judge is a judicial officer who presides over a sessions court, handling both civil and criminal cases. 'Our submission is that the order has no legal basis. It was a one-sided decision without giving defence a chance to be heard,' Mazari said. She also said the magistrate court had no jurisdiction over the matter. The next hearing in the sessions court is on July 21. In Pakistan's judicial system, cases start at civil and judicial magistrate courts and appeals are heard in high courts and the Supreme Court. Digital rights campaigners say that any ban would further undermine free speech in Pakistan, where the authorities are accused of stifling newspapers and television, and social media is seen as one of the few outlets for dissent. - Reuters

Google launches new AI marketing tools to supercharge business growth in SEA

Google unveiled a powerful suite of AI-powered marketing tools designed to help businesses and advertisers succeed in a fast-changing digital environment at the Google Marketing Live Southeast Asia event on 9 July 2025 in Singapore. These tools—launched across Google Search, YouTube, and Google Ads—mark a significant step forward in how artificial intelligence can drive marketing performance, scale content creation, and enhance campaign effectiveness. The announcement reaffirms Google's commitment to equipping marketers in Southeast Asia with tools that meet today's consumer behaviours: visual, voice-driven, and increasingly complex. Southeast Asians turn to Google and YouTube not just to find information, but to explore, discover, and decide. With over 5 trillion searches annually and more than 1 billion daily shopping journeys, Google Search is rapidly evolving into an intelligent, multimodal assistant—powered by AI tools like Google Lens, Circle to Search, AI Overviews, and the new AI Mode. YouTube, the region's #1 video platform, continues to be a powerhouse for brand discovery and business impact. It reaches more daily users across all generations than any other video platform and, importantly, delivers over 2X ROI compared to linear TV in key markets like Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. YouTube also outperforms platforms like Meta and TikTok in ROI, thanks to its trusted creators and broad audience reach. A New Generation of AI Tools for Marketers Google's latest innovations span the entire marketing funnel—from creative production to predictive performance—bringing smarter, more personalised tools to marketers across Southeast Asia. Sapna Chadha, Vice President of Google Southeast Asia and South Asia Frontier, said, 'As consumer journeys grow more complex and marketers face growing demands, our new AI tools offer speed, precision, and scale. These innovations allow businesses—big or small—to predict trends, reach the right audiences, and unlock performance with less manual effort.' Highlights from Google Marketing Live SEA: Ads in AI Overviews AI Overviews is now the world's most used generative AI product, with 1.5 billion users worldwide. It helps answer complex queries through concise summaries and follow-up suggestions. Now, Google is introducing Ads in AI Overviews, offering brands the ability to appear in these smart summaries—right at the moment of curiosity and consideration. Later this year, Ads in AI Overviews will launch in English in Malaysia, along with Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This will give local businesses new high-impact ad placements integrated into users' search experiences. Asset Studio This new feature in Google Ads uses generative AI to help marketers instantly create and customize visuals and videos using Google's advanced models like Imagen and Veo. It enables infinite creative variation, letting brands adapt content for different audiences and platforms with ease—speeding up campaign production and testing. AI Max for Search AI Max is a breakthrough tool that replaces manual keyword targeting with smart, intent-based matching. By analyzing your website and ads using Google's Gemini models, AI Max automatically generates high-performing headlines and matches ads to long-tail, voice, or image-based searches. Malaysian telco Maxis piloted AI Max for Search to great success—reaching new customers through multilingual searches, including Chinese, and delivering ads that aligned precisely with user intent. 'We love how AI Max for Search expanded our Search reach with long-tail and multi-language terms, matching or beating our manual keyword click-through rate – all with just a checkbox,' said Aileen Soo, Head of Discovery at Maxis. Regional brands are also seeing success—e-commerce giant Shopee reported 2X conversions and 49% higher ROI during a five-week trial across Southeast Asia. AI Mode Google's most advanced search experience yet, AI Mode, supports deeper reasoning, multimodal input, and follow-up interaction. Users are asking longer, more complex questions, and Google will soon test integrating ads within AI Mode responses in the U.S.—offering marketers even more high-quality touchpoints. YouTube Creator Partnerships Hub Brands can now use this new AI-powered tool to easily discover and collaborate with YouTube creators based on keyword, topic, or trend. The Hub includes audience analytics and lets marketers turn creator content into measurable ads. Already live in Singapore and Indonesia, the Hub will soon expand to more Southeast Asian markets. Agentic AI in Google Ads & Analytics Google is also adding agentic capabilities—smart assistants that work with marketers, not just for them. In Google Ads, Agentic AI can suggest real-time optimizations, generate creatives, and manage campaigns based on performance data. In Google Analytics, it provides smarter, instant insights—saving teams time and surfacing opportunities faster. Powering Malaysia's Digital Growth The rollout of Ads in AI Overviews in Malaysia later this year will be a key milestone, opening new pathways for local businesses to connect with potential customers at the most valuable moment: the start of the decision journey. Combined with other innovations like AI Max for Search, Asset Studio, and the YouTube Creator Partnerships Hub, these tools position Malaysian marketers to grow in a smarter, more agile way. As AI transforms how people search, shop, and discover, Google is leading the charge—turning cutting-edge models into accessible, impactful tools for business success across Southeast Asia. Pakistan court suspends order seeking YouTube ban on government critics
