Channel crossings continue amid crunch talks over migrant deal

Migrants are making the journey across the English Channel as Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are in crunch talks over a deal to curb the crossings.
Pictures show people wearing life jackets arriving in Dover, Kent disembarking from a Border Force boat amid sunny weather on Thursday.
Border Force vessels have been sent as part of the response to multiple boats on Thursday morning, according to HM coastguard.
A spokesman said: 'HM Coastguard has been co-ordinating a response to multiple incidents involving small boats in the Channel this morning, 10 July.
'UK Border Force vessels have been sent as part of this response.'
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage posted on X that he was also in the Channel and saw 78 migrants, including four women and children.
Speaking to GB News from a boat in the Channel, he said: 'This is a classic day in the English Channel over the last five years when the weather's calm, or a red day, as they call it.
'You've got a migrant boat and we've seen it through the binoculars.
'There's about 70 people on board, being escorted, all the way over by the French Navy and behind us, we have Border Force sitting on the 12-mile line, waiting for the handover.'
It comes as the Prime Minister and French president said a 'new deterrent' was needed to stop small boats crossing the English Channel.
Sir Keir hopes President Macron will sign up to a 'one in, one out' deal on Thursday, the last day of Mr Macron's state visit to the UK.

Only 4 of them are women and children.

Under the terms of the deal, Britain would accept migrants with links to the country in exchange for sending others back across the Channel.
More than 21,000 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel so far this year, which is a record for this point in the year since data collection began in 2018.
But ahead of the agreement, Asylum Matters executive director Louise Calvey said: 'Another grubby trade in human lives will do nothing more than remove people from this country back into the hands of people smugglers, back to French shores where they'll face the escalating police violence that has been agreed alongside this deal- violence that will cost people their lives.
'The only way to stop people from making dangerous journeys is to give them safe routes to seek sanctuary.'
Speaking in Parliament as part of his state visit to the UK on Tuesday, Mr Macron said France and the UK have a 'shared responsibility to address irregular migration with humanity, solidarity and fairness.'
A Home Office spokesperson said the Government has a 'serious plan' to crack down on people smuggling gangs.

Reform's Laura Anne Jones has no principles, Tory MS says

Welsh Conservatives have rallied around to attack a former Senedd colleague after she defected to Evans accused Laura Anne Jones of having no principles, while Tom Giffard said Reform was welcome to someone who was "always in the news for the wrong reasons".It comes as two councillors in Conwy left the Tories for Anne Jones was unveiled by Nigel Farage as the party's first Senedd member at the Royal Welsh Show on Tuesday. Reform said Jones had made "a principled decision" to join the party. Jones told a news conference for the announcement: "I've just suddenly felt that the Conservative Party was unrecognisable to me. It wasn't the party that I joined over three decades ago."She said Reform "is listening to the people of Great Britain" and called party leader Nigel Farage "a great man".Speaking to BBC Radio Wales Breakfast on Wednesday, Evans said: "Laura Anne Jones is a close friend of mine."The Member of the Senedd (MS) for Brecon and Radnor said he first learned she was leaving for Reform at the time of the announcement. "Laura and I have spoken, and I've made my opinions very clear. I don't think she's made the right decision."I am a firm believer, if you are elected as a Conservative member of the Senedd, you owe it to the electorate, you owe it to your party, to see your term of office out as a Conservative.""Jumping to Reform, it seems that she doesn't have any principles."Evans added: "Everything about the Nigel Farage circus turning up here yesterday, I don't think he had the response he was expecting. "I heard him being booed. I heard him being jeered in some places, and a lot of people here don't trust what he's got to say."Because one minute he'll come here and say one thing, and then he'll go somewhere else and say something different.""They're not a credible option and they're not a credible party." Tom Giffard, MS for South Wales West, told BBC Radio Cymru's Dros Frecwast programme that one of the problems with Jones' defection was that the Senedd group had given Laura "a lot of support over the last few years"."This is the way she's chosen to do this, and it's not good enough."He said the Conservative Party in Wales "is pulling in the right direction. We have policies that I think are exciting"."The important thing now is that we've got rid of someone who was always in the news for the wrong reasons... Reform are welcome to have those headlines in the future." The defection comes just under a year since Jones apologised for using a racist slur about Chinese people in a WhatsApp has been investigated by the Senedd's standards commissioner Douglas Bain, a probe believed to be related to allegations of bullying by a senior member of that she is about to be cleared, Jones said she has seen the report and is confident "with the outcome".On Tuesday Farage said of the allegations facing her: "Let me assure you that she would not have come to us, and we wouldn't have accepted her, if we weren't confident that will all go away."A police investigation into complaints about her expenses found "no evidence of fraudulent activity". A Reform spokesman said: "Laura has made a principled decision to join a party that she believes truly represents her values and offers Wales a better future."It's clear from the reaction of Mr Giffard and Mr Evans that if anyone dares to challenge the establishment and their cosy status quo, they attack them personally rather than engage with the reasons people are leaving."Reform UK will continue to stand up for the people of Wales and push for a government that puts Cymru first." Who are the Conwy councillors who have defected to Reform? Meanwhile two Conservative councillors on Conwy Council have defected to Reform UK, the party has told Newyddion Montgomery and Louise Emery expressed "sadness" over their decision but said they "cannot stand by any longer" adding that "the two main parties have failed".Thomas Montgomery has served as the county councillor for the Tudno ward since 2022 and is currently deputy mayor of said: "Our politics and our country are broken. We need a party with vision, passion, and policies that deliver for working people and small businesses up and down Wales and the United Kingdom."Louise Emery has served as county councillor for Gogarth Mostyn since 2017, having previously been deputy leader and held other cabinet positions. She is also a current town councillor in said that Reform UK had a "manifesto of common-sense policies" and would "deliver change at local government, the Senedd, and in Westminster".The Welsh Conservatives have been asked to to a question on whether we can expect more defections from other parties, Reform UK said they "engage in regular conversations with members of all parties and independents," but that Reform "don't comment on private conversations".

France and Italy to collaborate on 'Made in Europe' initiative

Paris - French Economy Minister Eric Lombard and Industry Minister Marc Ferracci are scheduled to meet with Italian Minister for Businesses Adolfo Urso in Paris on Thursday. The objective of this meeting is to establish common ground regarding the challenges facing the European industry and the concept of "Made in Europe." The French ministers' offices informed journalists that their aim is to unite with Italy in advocating for the protection of European industries, intending to jointly present these concerns to Brussels. Among the topics slated for discussion is the survival of the European steel industry, which faces intense and, at times, unfair competition from China and the United States. The European Commission has indicated it will propose legislation in September to reduce steel imports into Europe by over 50 percent through various trade measures, a move supported by France. Discussions between the ministers of both countries are also expected to cover the automotive industry, with a shared goal to boost demand for clean vehicles manufactured with European content. Additionally, they will address the concept of "European preference," particularly in public procurement. The French Ministry of Economy and Finance noted that Italy is increasingly aligning with France on several policy positions, including nuclear energy, which Italy seeks to revive. Both France and Italy advocate for nuclear energy to be treated similarly to renewable energies within European legislation. The French ministers' offices further highlighted that competitiveness and technological neutrality are key areas of convergence with Italy. Thursday's meeting is being held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance as part of the annual ministerial meetings stipulated by the Quirinal Treaty, signed between the two countries in 2021. This meeting follows a display of "shared commitment" and "strong convergence" between Giorgia Meloni and Emmanuel Macron during a lengthy one-on-one meeting in Rome in early June, which aimed to alleviate recent tensions that have intensified since Donald Trump's return to the White House. Fury as cops admit ESCORTING pro-migrant protesters to Epping asylum hotel where violent clashes erupted

COPS have admitted escorting pro-migrant protesters to an asylum hotel before violence erupted. Essex Police had initially denied it had brought demonstrators from Stand Up to Racism to the Bell Hotel in Epping before clashes with anti-migrant protesters last Sunday (July 17). 8 8 The force changed its tune after being shown footage of the activists being led from a station to the protest while holding placards. It is due to hold a press conference later today to explain its actions. Six people have been charged with offences related to the disorder. It comes as the Brittannia Hotel in London's Canary Wharf is currently preparing for migrants to arrive. Photos show new beds being unloaded and carried into the hotel. Chaos was sparked outside the hotel in Epping last week after an asylum seeker appeared in court charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. The unrest saw yobs launching themselves on riot vans, smashing windshields and ripping off wingmirrors in senseless displays of "hooliganism". One thug was even run over while attempting to stop a police van gaining access to the hotel. Another man had his teeth knocked out after riot cops smashed a shield into his face in a brutal clash. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said "heads will roll" over the escort, which he alleged was done to "force a confrontation". He added: 'Initially they denied that it had ever happened in the first place.' The politician had previously said: 'I didn't want to believe this had happened and then I saw the video. "It's an absolute disgrace, and the police's priorities need urgently looking at.' Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper said: 'We have a reasonable duty to protect people who want to exercise their rights. 'In terms of bringing people to the hotel, the police have a duty to facilitate free assembly. "We would only ever take people away from protest if we felt there was an immediate threat to people or property, to free up police resources, to protect others, or to prevent additional violence. 'In Epping, officers took all three of those into account before making their decisions.' 8 8 8 8 8
