Ludhiana: Bathinda trader accuses cops of damaging car
A Bathinda-based businessman accused Ludhiana traffic police of damaging his Skoda Rapid car during towing and refusing to get it repaired. The incident took place on Sunday when the vehicle was towed from Model Town market for alleged wrong parking. Gurpinder Singh, a resident of Rampura Phull, Bathinda, said he was in Ludhiana for kidney stone treatment. After parking his car and stepping out for shopping, he returned to find it missing. The vehicle had been taken to police lines by the traffic police.
Gurpinder alleged that upon reaching the police lines, he found the engine severely damaged with oil leaking. Instead of taking responsibility, police officials allegedly offered to release the car without a challan. Gurpinder insisted on a challan as a record of the car being in their custody. Though a challan was finally issued, the police refused to bear repair costs from an authorised dealer and instead offered local repairs.
Refusing the offer, Gurpinder said he will pursue legal action.
Assistant commissioner of police (Traffic 2), Gurpreet Singh, said the department is liable to repair any vehicle damaged during towing. He assured the matter will be looked into and action will be taken accordingly.

Hemachandran murder: one more suspect nabbed from Wayanad
The special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Kozhikode City police has arrested one more person who reportedly had direct involvement in the alleged abduction and murder of Hemachandran, a Kozhikode-based businessman. Melbin Mathew, the fifth accused in the incident, was nabbed on Sunday (August 17) after the police collected strong evidence establishing his close contact with the other four partners in the alleged crime. Four Wayanad natives — P.V. Noushad, 33, Jyothish Kumar, 32, and B.S. Ajesh, 27 and V.V. Vysakh, 28 — had already been arrested in connection with the incident. Police sources said that Melbin was aware of the alleged conspiracy behind the abduction and murder of the 52-year-old following some financial deals. They said he was present in the car, which was used for the alleged abduction. It was on June 28 that the police cracked the murder case, which was initially registered as a case of man missing at the Kozhikode Medical College police station. The SIT zeroed in on the five suspects after a 16-month-long probe with the support of the Kozhikode City cyber cell and crime squad. Hemachandran, a Wayanad native, had temporarily settled at Mayanad in Kozhikode for his private chit fund business. The SIT found that he was abducted from Kozhikode city on March 20, 2024, and later murdered in Wayanad following some financial disputes. The successful recovery of the secretly buried body from the Cherambadi forest in Tamil Nadu was a major breakthrough in the investigation.

UP woman accuses brother, his ‘wife' of forcing her to convert, marry elderly man
A 21-year-old woman in Prayagraj has accused her elder brother and his purported wife of pressuring her to convert to another religion and force her into marrying a Kolkata-based elderly man from another community. The accused woman, Rubaiya, was arrested on Saturday and raids were on to trace the complainant's brother who is absconding, police said. In her complaint to police, the woman said her brother Rahul Kushwaha, who has a criminal background and was recently released after serving five years in prison, brought home Rubaiya introducing her to the family as his wife. An FIR has been registered at the Prayagraj Cantonment police station against Rahul and Rubaiya under Sections 298 (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the anti-conversion law. According to the police, the complainant alleged that days after his release from prison last year, Rahul brought home Rubaiya, a mother of two children whose husband was lodged in prison. After Rubaiya started living in their house, Rahul prohibited the other family members from offering prayers to Hindu deities at home, the complainant alleged. Also, Rahul and Rubaiya started pressuring to embrace Islam and marry an elderly man from Kolkata, and when she resisted they even threatened to kill her, it was alleged. SK Kannojia, Station House Officer (SHO), Cantonment police station, said they will investigate if a gang or a racket is behind it. 'Rahul already has criminal cases against him,' he confirmed.

Leak of complaint submitted to CPI(M) Polit Bureau triggers political controversy
A political controversy appears to be brewing over the media leak of a 'confidential complaint' purportedly submitted to the Polit Bureau (PB) of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] by a Kozhikode-based businessperson. The controversial letter reportedly implicated a group of CPI(M) leaders, including former Ministers, in financial scams centred around a U.K.-based businessperson from Kerala. The complaint emerged in the public domain on Sunday after the NRI businessperson adduced it as evidence in a libel suit filed by him against his rival and some sections of the media in a Delhi court. Graft charges The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized on the somewhat knotty controversy riddled with accusations of financial shenanigans, corruption, money laundering and nepotism in an attempt to put the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government on the defensive. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan demanded a clarification from the party and the government on the veracity of the accusations raised by the Kozhikode-based businessperson. Mr. Satheesan said the crux of the litigation appeared to be bitter feuding between two business rivals for the patronage of powerful CPI(M) leaders. He noted financial transactions involving the next of kin of CPI(M) leaders might be at the root of the scandal. Nevertheless, Mr. Satheesan stated, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan owed the public an explanation. He said the presence of the U.K.-based businessperson at the CPI(M)'s 24th party conference in Madurai in April, and his attendance at the Kerala Loka Sabha conference added to the political intrigue. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, MLA, stated that the sensational leak was mystifying and appeared to signal that 'something was rotten' in the CPI(M) 's State leadership. He said the scandal had the contours of official corruption with international ramifications and hidden rivalries within the CPI(M) leadership. Mr. Joseph demanded an investigation. 'Calls for inquiry' BJP former State president K. Surendran said the accuser had alleged in the letter that the NRI businessperson's paper company registered in Chennai had profited from government projects. 'If the accusations are true, they warranted an inquiry under the anti-money laundering and foreign exchange management laws,' he said.
