Carlton coach speaks on Curnow trade speculation

The Advertiser23-07-2025
Carlton coach Michael Voss has dismissed reports Charlie Curnow is considering leaving the club, saying the star forward will end his career at the Blues.
Contracted until the end of 2029, Curnow is understood to have spoken to the club about the possibility of a move to the Gold Coast for lifestyle reasons to play for the Suns.
The dual Coleman medallist has been below his best recently, going four-straight games without a goal before he kicked three in Carlton's win against Melbourne last Saturday night.
After reports emerged on Tuesday night, Voss attempted to shut down the "speculation" ahead of the Blues' clash with Hawthorn on Thursday night.
"Charlie's a Carlton man and he'll stay a Carlton man," Voss said on Wednesday.
"I'm not sure how much more emphatic I need to be on that.
"Charlie's a very important person to us, and he'll play out his career here.
"He's a Carlton person and he'll stay one."
Voss denied he had chatted to Curnow about any possibility of moving to another club.
The 28-year-old isn't believed to be unhappy with the Blues, he has just grown tired of being in the spotlight at a big Melbourne club.
"I appreciate these times of the year, and when you're not going so well, there will always be some speculation on your players, but it probably ends there for us," Voss said.
Curnow has kicked 311 games in 148 games for Carlton since debuting in 2016.
Serious knee injuries derailed his career from 2019 to the end of 2021, but he returned superbly with 64 goals in 2022 and a career-high 81 in the 2023 season when the Blues made a preliminary final.
Gold Coast would be unlikely to be able to accommodate Curnow in a trade and are also already stacked with tall forward talent.
Rumours surrounding Curnow come ahead of a huge off-field period for Carlton.
The Blues have slumped to 7-11, after starting the season with ambitions of winning their first premiership since 1995.
Graham Wright will soon take over as chief executive from Brian Cook, with major change expected to happen in the off-season.
Voss is also no guarantee to coach next season, despite being contracted for another year.
"There's no change in the way we're operating," Voss said.
"Maybe the names at the desk have changed because Brian moves out and Graham comes in.
"But in terms of how we how we go about our list management strategy and our build, everyone will have their input at the right time.
"There's no (point) predicting what happens next, it's about what we need to be able to do over the next four or five weeks."
In a boost for Carlton, Voss confirmed star forward Harry McKay will return to face the Hawks after missing the last eight weeks because of a knee injury.
The Blues will enter the match as outsiders, but will be determined to send club hero Sam Docherty out as a winner in his final game before retirement.

AFL 2025: Alastair Clarkson says he can steer Roos' through ‘growing pains'

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson insists he is up for the challenge of leading the Kangaroos through their 'growing pains'. The Kangaroos suffered their worst loss for the season to Geelong last Saturday, succumbing to the Cats by 101 points, and are facing a sixth straight bottom-two finish. Despite collecting more wins than last year, the heat has risen on Clarkson and whether he is developing the raft of first-round picks to compete at AFL level. Clarkson referenced young defender Wil Dawson and how the Roos would persist with him in important roles, like the one he had on Jeremy Cameron for parts last week. The four-time premiership coach said 'it's all terrific learning' for players of Dawson's experience as they pushed through 'growing pains'. 'Three or four weeks ago when (Dawson) played against (Sam) Darcy, it was a real step forward, 'Geez, he can compete with Sam Darcy, that's a good effort',' he said. 'Then he has a game against Geelong last week and it's Cameron and (Shannon) Neale and it's like, 'Oh wow, there's 15 goals between them' … it's all terrific learning. 'Some players need that exposure and it's tough to sit through. We don't want to sit through it for too long … it's just some of the growing pains unfortunately. 'Some of the more senior, experienced sides in the competition have already been through those growing pains, we're going through them now.' Clarkson said the question marks on whether he'd developed the young Roos at all were 'all part' of being a senior coach. He doesn't know when it can turn for North Melbourne but is confident it can. 'It's why we do what we do, we love the game and part of the challenge is overcoming the adversity,' he said. 'It's a tough job though with any list in the competition and we just keep batting away at it. 'I had some tough times when I was at Hawthorn, 2014, no one would look at it and say, '2014 was a terrific year for Hawthorn, they won the premiership that year'. 'But gee we confronted some adversity. I was out for six weeks with a serious illness, some of our more senior players were missing 10, 12, 14 weeks of footy and it was a really, really tough year. 'It was unbelievably rewarding that even despite the adversity we were able to win – but that's what we're searching for. 'We know this game is tough, whether you're a side that's good and challenging at the top end, it's still really, really tough. 'Having been in the game a long period of time, as tough as it is and it seems like, 'Well gee we're being overly patient'. All of a sudden it will turn and the confidence of the group will rise. 'When that's going to happen, I don't know, but sometimes it can happen really quickly.' Clarkson vows he is still up for the challenge of rebuilding North Melbourne and again uses his time at Hawthorn as proof. 'I love the challenge of it, it's a significant challenge, but I don't see it any different to the challenge when I first arrived at Hawthorn,' he said. 'No senior coach, political turmoil in the footy club, less than 25,000 members and in a very, very quick space of time that club was able to turn itself around. 'I am confident it can be done here as well and I'm enjoying the challenge of it as well.' Wallabies vs British and Irish Lions: Nic White starts in final Test match for Australia

Australian scrum half Nic White will bring an end to his Test rugby career by starting in the number nine jersey for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions on Saturday. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has made four changes to the starting 15 who had their hearts broken last week in Melbourne, as the Lions scored in the final minute to claim a 29-26 win, and secure the series. Follow the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia on ABC Sport, including live blogs of all three Tests against the Wallabies. White announced on Thursday morning that he will bring an end to his professional rugby career at the end of 2025, and said his Test career would conclude following the Lions' series. "Rugby has given me so much to be grateful for. I've made some incredible memories, some lifelong friendships and had the opportunity to see the world," White said in a statement. "There's been great competition for the nine jersey here in the Wallabies for a number of years, and it feels like the right time to pass on the baton with some more good young players coming through who will need time in the saddle leading into what's going to be an unbelievable experience of a home Rugby World Cup in 2027." White will replace Jake Gordon, who started the previous two Test matches. Queenslander Tate McDermott will be the scrum half replacement off the bench, after being a makeshift winger for 60 minutes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground following Harry Potter's hamstring injury. Dylan Pietsch will start on the left wing for the Wallabies in place of Potter. Wallabies prop Allan Alaalatoa and flanker Rob Valetini have been ruled out of the third Test match with injury. Taniela Tupou, who impressed for the First Nations-Pasifika XV last week against the Lions, will start at tighthead prop. Tom Hooper will replace Valentin at blindside flanker, the third player to wear the number six jersey this series. Schmidt said the squad had recovered after the disappointment of last weekend's narrow defeat. "The squad was certainly deflated after the gut-wrenching end to last week's Test in Melbourne, but they have started to gather momentum in the back half of the week, and will be ready to go again on Saturday," he said. "The support in Brisbane and Melbourne helped to lift the squad, and I know the support this weekend in [Stadium Australia], will again help to lift the players in the high-pressure moments that we know are coming." The Wallabies will have a bench consisting of five forwards and three backs. The Wallabies' gamble to have just two back replacements backfired last week following the early injury to Potter. Andrew Kellaway returns to the side on the bench, while Zane Nonggorr comes into the side as a replacement prop. Calro Tizzano, who was the Wallaby at the centre of the controversial ruck prior to the Lions scoring the match-winner in Melbourne, is not in the match-day team. James Slipper, David Porecki, Taniela Tupou, Nick Frost, Will Skelton, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson (captain), Nic White, Tom Lynagh, Dylan Pietsch, Len Ikitau, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Max Jorgensen, Tom Wright. Reserves: Billy Pollard, Angus Bell, Zane Nonggorr, Jeremy Williams, Langi Gleeson, Tate McDermott, Ben Donaldson, Andrew Kellaway.
