Aston Villa file complaint after Champions League dream ended in Man Utd defeat
Aston Villa will make a complaint to the Premier League after a controversial 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday cost them Champions League football next season.
Villa missed out on a top-five finish on goal difference to Newcastle and will need to settle for a place in the less lucrative Europa League instead.
The visitors had goalkeeper Emi Martinez sent off before half-time and were furious at the decision to disallow a goal by Morgan Rogers when the score was still level at 0-0.
Referee Thomas Bramall blew for a foul on United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir before Rogers put the ball in the net, meaning VAR could not then review the decision.
To rub salt into Villa's wounds, United then struck through Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen's penalty to deny them the point they needed.
"The decision is incredible," said Villa captain John McGinn.
"To whistle at that point, it is hard to take. All you need is a point to get into Champions League."
Villa director of football operations Damian Vidagany told reporters the club will complain to the Premier League over the decision to appoint Bramall instead of a more experienced official.
Despite the win, United finished their worst ever Premier League campaign in 15th.

Fresh from defeat in the Europa League final, United supporters took aim at the club's owners before kick-off.
Chants and banners again called for the American Glazer family to sell their majority stake after overseeing a drastic decline in the club's fortunes during their 20-year reign.
However, manager Ruben Amorim said he believes "good days" are coming for the fallen English giants as he apologised to fans after the match.
"Today after this disaster season, I want to tell you the good days are coming," said Amorim.
"If there is one club in the world that can overcome any season, any disaster, it is our club, it is Manchester United."
Alejandro Garnacho was absent from the United squad entirely after reportedly being told by Amorim that his future lies elsewhere.
Yet, the under-fire Portuguese coach got the response he would have wanted in a fine performance.
Martinez was starting what could be his final game for Villa amid speculation he is set for a move.
If that is the case, the Argentinian ended on a sour note as he came rushing off his line to wipe out Rasmus Hojlund and see red after the striker latched onto Matty Cash's underhit backpass.
Hojlund then thought he had ended his wait since December for a home league goal only for the offside flag to rule out the Danish striker's header.
Diogo Dalot and Casemiro also hit the post, provoking Amorim to kick a water bottle in frustration.
The mood among the travelling support was lifted when Everton went in front at Newcastle, meaning a point would have been enough for Villa to finish in the top five.
However, the course of the game changed within seconds.
Bayindir was deemed to have control of the ball before Rogers robbed it and fired into an empty net.
Moments later, Diallo stole in at the back post to head in Bruno Fernandes' cross.
Diallo was then chopped down by Ian Maatsen and Fernandes allowed Eriksen to take the honours from the spot in the Dane's final United game.

Wooden spent his time coaching players who dribbled with their hands instead of their feet in the 1970s. That means it's unlikely his famous quote was directed at the transfer strategies of Manchester United and Chelsea. Advertisement In acquiring Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap, each club appears to be doing something. Whether early transfer window activity indicates edging closer to securing silverware or a place in the top four next year is another story. At the very least, it represents hope around the Blues' 2/1 and their Manchester counterparts' 5/1 top four odds. Delap and Cunha also share another similarity; their numbers don't tell the whole story of their value to each club. Let's dive deeper into the metrics. Let's not beat around the bush: Ipswich Town were objectively bad this past season. The Tractor Boys' minus-1.01 expected goal (xG) differential per 90 minutes ranked 17th in the league — nearly triple the difference of Wolves in 16th. When attackers like Delap play substantial minutes for a side this dreadful, it raises questions whether their statistics accurately reflect their abilities. At 22 years old, Delap is just about to enter his prime. Considering that context, however, his underlying numbers are, well, not great: Chelsea's incumbent striker, Nicolas Jackson, has his weaknesses, particularly around his finishing, but there's no denying his surface numbers supercede Delap. Jackson's 0.50 non-penalty xG per 90 mark is nearly double Delap's 0.27. While some forwards could make up for that gap with their contributions to build-up play or chance-creation in the final third, the former Tractor Boy doesn't do either of those things. The only thing Delap does better than Jackson is dribble past opposing defenders. For Delap's inclusion to make a significant shift in Chelsea's prospects, his underwhelming numbers have to be a by-product of Ipswich's shortcomings. The Tractor Boys only averaged 40 per cent possession during the 2024-25 season. Kieran McKenna's side also were last in touches and passes into the penalty area. Projecting what this signing means for the South Londoners means trying to determine whether Delap's numbers were underwhelming due to his own poor performance or because his team simply never had possession of the ball. Advertisement Even if the answer lies somewhere in the middle, it's hard to project Delap as the type of player that adds a ton of value to Chelsea's 22/1 title odds. The Blues' top four odds might be a different story. If Delap can prove to be an effective rotation player, then the 2/1 odds for the team to qualify for the Champions League next season seem like the better bet. Delap's numbers call into question his actual level of impact, but it's quite clear the kind of player Cunha is. The 26-year-old is a good, not great, winger whose market value rose thanks to a season buoyed by a fiery finishing streak. The Brazilian scored 15 goals off just 8.6 xG — a conversion rate that even Lionel Messi would be envious of. If the predictive strength of xG has taught us anything, it's that Cunha is headed toward a serious regression next season. Thankfully for United, he does bring a decent dose of playmaking. Cunha ranks in the 80th percentile of all attacking midfielders in expected assists and led Wolves in shot-creating actions last season. Yet even with that all-around production, there's no denying that his signing is simply a signing for the sake of change given the presence of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. Rashford almost exactly matches Cunha's production, while the 20-year-old Garnacho offers far more promise. Despite being six years his junior, the young Argentine matched Cunha's non-penalty xG of 0.30 this past season. The problem for United is that Garnacho and Rashford have had a series of run-ins with recent managers. Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim sought to find alternatives, and now the latter seems poised to push both players out of the club. At 8/15 odds to head to Barcelona, Rashford seems destined to leave Old Trafford. Garnacho's most likely destination is also outside of Manchester as Napoli (6/4) are currently the club favoured to secure his services. Advertisement As great as data is, it can't really measure the impact of someone like Cunha slotting into a starting XI match after match without high-profile spats with his manager. Professionalism and locker room cohesion may not matter as much as actually putting the ball in the back of the net, but those intangibles do matter. That said, United finished 12th in non-penalty xG differential last season. This was not an unlucky side needing some stability, it is a side in need of players who move the needle (Bruno Fernandes staying should also help). Cunha is a solid player and perhaps a better fit with Amorim, but those intangible factors aren't enough to make United's 5/1 top four odds any more enticing than they already are. It's been a busy summer transfer window for Manchester United already, and the Red Devils aren't slowing down anytime soon. Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle have already been linked with 25-year-old Cameroon international, but Mbeumo appears to have made a swift decision to have everything sorted and settled long before he reports for preseason. Man United must still negotiate a transfer fee with Brentford, who will certainly intend to recoup north of 60 or $70 million. The Red Devils have already splashed out $84 million to sign another standout winger, Matheus Cunha (15 goals, 6 assists) from Wolves, leading us (and everyone else to wonder: Is captain Bruno Fernandes on his way out? Brentford's leading scorer (20 goals this season) has just two years remaining on his current contract (one year plus a club option) and the west London club is resigned to the fact they must sell now due to the incredible demand. It's not the worst position to be in, or even an unfamiliar one for Brentford, who are one of the best clubs in the world at unearthing lesser known talent that can play at the highest level. See, for example: Mbeumo, Bryan. Now, the next logical question is: Is Yoane Wissa (one year left on his contract with no option) going to leave, too? Inter Milan want loan for Ramsus Hojlund Rasmus Hojlund is two years into his time at Man United, and the club is buying goalscorers like there's a global shortage of them (there is). Probably not the best indicator of job security for a 22-year-old striker whose league goals just fell from 10 to 4 from season 1 to 2, not to mention one who cost more than $80 million. That doesn't mean lots of other clubs, like Inter Milan, aren't still interested in Hojlund this summer, just not anywhere near what United paid for him and probably also not permanently right away (meaning United have a wait a year to receive the transfer fee). That's what happens when big buys go bad, and United sure do know something about that. Speaking of which… Jadon Sancho to leave Chelsea after loan expires Jadon Sancho will leave Chelsea when his loan ends later this month after club and player couldn't agree personal terms to make his move from Manchester United a permanent one. Chelsea had a $34-million obligation to sign Sancho permanently this summer, but now the Blues will instead pay a penalty of roughly $7 million to send him back to Man United, at which point he will almost certainly be offered out again — though, it wasn't current manager Ruben Amorim who booted him from the first team last summer. Sancho tallied 3 goals and 4 assists for Chelsea in the PL last season. Brentford sign Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool Brentford have executed a summer swap in goal as last year's starter Mark Flekken has moved to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for $15 million, and Liverpool backup Caoimhin Kelleher has joined for $17 million. Pretty solid business by the Bees, who basically traded in their 31-year-old starter who had one year left, for a five-year younger model with potential still to reach for no extra charge. Brentford sign goalkeeper Kelleher from Liverpool
Brentford have completed the signing of Irish international goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool for a reported fee of up to £18 million ($24 million). The Bees' previous number one Mark Flekken joined Bayer Leverkusen earlier on Tuesday in a deal worth around 10 million euros (£8.5 million, $11.5 million). Advertisement Kelleher played an important role in Liverpool's Premier League triumph, making 10 appearances during the absence of Alisson Becker due to injury. However, the 26-year-old was keen for more first-team action and could have fallen further down the pecking order at Anfield with the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. Kelleher has signed a five-year deal at Brentford with a club option of an additional season. "As well as being a very good goalkeeper, I've rarely met a player for whom everybody has such positive words to say about his personality and character," said Brentford director of football Phil Giles.
